How to Make Orange Peel Shrimp

Today on The Stay at Home Chef, I'm showing you how to make Orange Peel Shrimp, a super easy dinner that's sure to impress. We're going to start with 1 pound of jumbo shrimp here in my bowl and to that, I'm going to sprinkle on a quarter cup of cornstarch and toss this together so that all of the shrimp pieces have a little bit of cornstarch on them. This is an important step because it's going to help the shrimp brown nicely when we cook them.

Once we've got our cornstarch-coated shrimp, we're going to take this over to the stove where I have a large skillet heating over high heat. I'm going to pour in a quarter cup of canola oil and then add in my shrimp to fry it. Toss it and let it fry in the oil until the shrimp is pink and cooked through. This should take about 2 to 3 minutes, depending on how quickly they cook.

Once our shrimp are cooked through, we're going to remove them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. We want to make sure they're nice and dry so that they don't steaming instead of browning. While the shrimp are draining, we can start working on the sauce. To do this, I'm going to add in about a tablespoon of norm (I think you meant "norm" isn't mentioned - likely is another ingredient not shown) then we'll add in a tablespoon of orange peels, orange zest, 4 cloves of crushed garlic, and half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat.

We're also going to add about a quarter cup of sliced green onions to the pan. We want to sauté these real quick just for about a minute, until they start to soften and get slightly caramelized. But we don't want to go much longer than a minute on this or your garlic will burn. Once our aromatics are nice and fragrant, we can add in another teaspoon of cornstarch and mix it in really quick.

Now that our sauce is starting to come together, we're going to pour in a quarter cup of orange juice and half a cup of tomato sauce. We'll also add in a teaspoon of soy sauce to give the dish a nice umami flavor. As you can see, this comes to a simmer really quickly. What we want to do now is cook this until the sauce thickens. This might take about 2-3 minutes, depending on how hot your stove is and how thick you like your sauce.

Once our sauce is simmering, bubbling, and thickened, we can add back in our shrimp all back in. Give it a quick toss just to coat it in the sauce, and that's it! You're ready to eat. Serve it up hot immediately over some steamed rice with a side of broccoli, and you have a complete fantastic meal that's sure to impress. Thank you for watching as always!
