The High vs Low: A Drifting Showdown
In the world of drifting, two cars stood out from the rest - the Low Car and the High Car. Both had been modified to perfection by their owners, but only one could be crowned the ultimate drifting champion. The stage was set for a final showdown between these two behemoths, with the winner determined by which car could initiate a slide the fastest and with the most control.
The drifters took their positions on the track, each man confident in his car's abilities. Nolan, behind the wheel of the High Car, was known for its impressive four-piston calipers that allowed it to grip the track like never before. He had spent countless hours fine-tuning the setup, and the result was a car that could launch itself down the track with ease. The Low Car, on the other hand, relied on its single piston caliper to generate power.
The starting lights flashed green, and both cars took off in unison. Nolan floored it, feeling the massive force of the four-piston calipers take hold. "It was pretty sick," he exclaimed, as his car shot down the track with ease. The Low Car, however, struggled to get out of its own way. Its single piston caliper couldn't generate enough power to overcome the weight of the car, and it stumbled along behind.
The two cars reached the first turn, each taking a different approach. Nolan took the inside line, expertly carving around the corner with ease. The Low Car, however, struggled to find traction. "It was a lot less effort," Nolan laughed, as he felt the resistance of the handbrake take hold. "I mean, it was pretty much as soon as you pull it, you feel resistance and you trust it."
As they approached the final turn, Nolan put the pedal to the metal once again. The High Car surged forward, its four-piston calipers gripping the track like a vice. But despite its impressive performance, Nolan couldn't shake the feeling that his handbrake was struggling. "Our massive four piston calipers were a bit more than our handbrake could handle," he explained, as he struggled to slow down.
The Low Car, meanwhile, had taken a different approach. It relied on its single piston caliper to generate power, and it showed remarkable results. The car's owner, Jimmy, was amazed at how much traction the car was able to generate. "It don't work," Jimmy laughed, as he struggled to slow down.
The two cars reached the final stretch of track, each taking a different approach. Nolan kicked out hard, using every trick in the book to initiate a slide. The Low Car, meanwhile, relied on its single piston caliper to get the job done. And as they crossed the finish line, it was clear that both cars had performed admirably.
But who had won? To find out, Donut Media decided to set up an reincarnation of the Buff Horseshoe, a famous drifting competition from last season. The two cars would be driven by their owners, with each car attempting to initiate a slide without the handbrake and then again with the handbrake.
The starting lights flashed green once more, and both cars took off in unison. Nolan felt the massive force of his four-piston calipers take hold, as he expertly carved around the first turn. The Low Car, meanwhile, struggled to find traction. Its single piston caliper couldn't generate enough power to overcome the weight of the car.
As they approached the final turn, Nolan put the pedal to the metal once again. The High Car surged forward, its four-piston calipers gripping the track like a vice. But despite its impressive performance, Nolan was determined to see who would come out on top. "I think his E-brake initiation is gonna go a little bit smoother than mine," he said, as he struggled to slow down.
And then it happened - both cars reached their final destination, each having initiated a slide with ease. But it was clear that the Low Car had performed better without the handbrake. Its single piston caliper may have been less powerful, but it had generated just enough traction to get the job done.
As the two drivers crossed the finish line, one couldn't help but feel impressed by both cars' performances. "Drifting is awesome," Nolan exclaimed, as he beamed with pride. And indeed, drifting is a sport that requires skill, precision, and a deep understanding of your car's capabilities.
But in the end, it was clear that more expensive didn't always mean better. Both cars had performed admirably, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. As one of the drivers put it, "I don't think so." The real question was - what made a good drifting car? Was it the power, the speed, or something else entirely?
As Donut Media wrapped up their final showdown between the High Car and Low Car, they couldn't help but leave one thing clear: the world of drifting is all about the driver. It's about how you connect with your car, how you understand its capabilities, and how you use that knowledge to create something truly special.
And so as we look back on this epic showdown between two incredible cars, it's clear that there's only one true champion - the owner who knows their car inside out, and can coax every last ounce of performance from its mighty engine.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en(welder crackling)- Oops.Fire, fire, fire.God. (honking)(upbeat music)- $800 hydraulic handbrake.- Vers $1,500 hydraulic handbrake.- Does more expensivereally mean more better?- Let's find out. That was one for the books, dude.- That was great.- That was oneof the best ones we've ever done.(hands thud)- We bought two nearlyidentical Nissan 350Z's.Then we modified themto be fun, daily driversyou can take to the track.- And then, we broke them.(people gasping)(sad trombone plays)- Yeah, and now, we'retransforming them to be fun, daily drivers that you can go drifting in.- In theory.(words chime)(dollars chime)One Z gets expensive parts.(dollar sign toots)- And one Z gets cheap parts.- And then, we test themto find out which componentsare worth spending yourhard-earned money on.- This was a great decision.Last time, we addeddrift-specific suspension kitsto both Z's, which letsus fine-tune our geometry, and make them nice and slidey.- But today, we're takingit one step furtherto be the slidiest boysthat ever did slid.(snake tail rattles)- We're adding the finalvariable to our drift equation, hydraulic handbrakes.- This ain't your mom's E-brake.- What do you mean it'snot my mom's E-brake?- Well, Nolan, I'm glad you asked.Your mom's E-brake usually uses a cableto lock the rear wheels up.But they're not builtto be constantly abused, and can be unreliable andinconsistent for drifting.Plus, a lot of times they'replaced really awkwardly, like in these cars.- Hydraulic handbrakes operatecompletely independentlyfrom the car's braking system. They have their own brake fluid reservoir, rear brake caliper, andnew, bigger brake leverallowing you to lock the rear wheelswith a quick flick of the wrist, making it much easier to initiate a drift.Plus, they look sick.(car revving)- They look really sick.(upbeat music)- Here at Low Team, we spent$740 on a universal handbrake.- Pretty basic.(Nolan laughs)It's all you need. It's a pipe with a nice finish.- Mounting plates, someperformance brake pads,a rear caliper bracket.- Which High Team doesn't needsince our sick new suspensionkit from our last videoalready included an additional mount.- Here's our stock brake caliper, which we'll be installing on there.- So this is inaddition to the stock caliperthat's already on there?- Yes.- So you're gonna havetwo big old caliperson the back of your car. It's a lot of weight on one. That's a lot of weight.- Yes.(man grunts)You're gonna have alot of a lot of weight.- I think mine are lighter.- We'll see. We'll see, we'll see.- We'll see, we'll see. We'll see.- We got a Wilwood brake reservoir here, that's pretty nice.- That's top tier.- That's a name I recognize. That's cool. That goes right in there. And some GK Tech brakelines as well.(plastic packet thuds)- Where are you pulling that out?Like a Mary Poppins bag?- I still have my secrets, James.- I think for most people, this is what you would go for.750 bucks and you'veupped your game immensely. Now, let's see what twiceas much money gets you.(hip-hop music)High Team is getting $1500 worthof top tier handbrake parts, including a Sikky handbrake kit.- Ew.- It's sick, it's in the name,I don't make the rules. The grip looks like a freaking cleaver. It looks like a nice chef's knife.(Nolan laughs)We also got mounting plates, brakelinesand four piston Wilwood calipers, and pads to match our current brake setup.- That's just over the top.- A four piston E-brake, dude.- It's just excessive, James.Should we compare the weights?- Yeah.(whistle blows)Yeah, dude.- Is it?- Yeah. (laughs)This is aluminum.- And that's like cast.- This is pig metal.Hold mine.- Okay, that's pretty light, that's pretty good.(whistle blows)Yeah.(James laughs)Stupid cast iron.- It's what you calldistribution, weight distribution.- Obviously, your parts are alot nicer and cooler looking, but I think functionally, they'll probably perform similarly enough.I don't think that it's gonnaperform twice as better.- Twice as better?- Yeah.(crickets chirping)- Well, let's find out. (laughs)(moderate hip-hop music)- All right, so we're inside Low Car.And as you can see already. (squeaks)Convenient, I know whereit is, easy to grab, whereas going down here, your arm's in a weird situation. You don't want to put unduestrain on your shoulderswhile you're in a motorsport situation. That's how you get a sports injury.(game character yells)We don't want that for you.So, we've got this mount plate right here. This is made by GK Tech, this is a different company. Therefore, they do notexactly mount together easily. We're gonna have to figure out a wayto mount our handbraketo our mounting plate.(metal bangs)(grinder buzzes)GK Tech does make a complete kit,so you don't have to do this. But we got the cheap handbrake,so we do have to do this.(grinder buzzes)(moderate hip-hop music)As well as clear out some roomin the transmission tunnelfor our brake fluid reservoir.(grinder buzzes)Looking forward to another long day.(sighs) Only a few more days, Nolan, only a few more days.(grinder buzzes)(moderate hip-hop music)(welder crackles)Okay.(mounting plate chiming)- Okay, so here I have astock rear caliper for any Z,and this fancy GK Tech adaptor kit, just allows us to bolt another one on.It came with new hardware and everything,so then all we have to do isplumb in the hydraulic lineto the E-brake.I think this is prettycool and worth every penny.(moderate music)(game sound effect chimes)It looks all the way in, right?- Yeah.- Can you imagine theinsurance premiums on a carthat came with two calipers on the rear?(metal bangs)(scene beeps)(car revving)Big thanks to K&N forsponsoring today's video.K&N is all about performance unlimited, with upgrades that are simple to install, and even custom designed tofit all makes and models. And from June 15 to July 26,you can get $50 off air intakes.K&N performance air intake systemsdeliver horsepower where it matters most. They're engineered to last a lifetime, and manufactured to hold up to the demandsof your daily grind or weekend adventure. We like K&N so much, we evenuse them in our personal cars.Like this one.And this one.- That's great, but youshould take it from me,James from High Team.We like K&N filters so much,we use them on all our cars.Like this one,or this one.- I literally just said that.- Yeah, but it sounds betterwhen High Team says it.We are everyone's favorite team.- And you need to goto knfilters.com/donutto get $50 off air intakesfrom June 15 to July 26,or just click the link belowto get performance unlimitedfor your car just like us.(upbeat music)(grinder buzzes)- Since we're replacing the knuckle, and all of our suspensionbits with Wisefab stuff,it actually comes with two locationsfor mounting brake calipers. So we're set up to do a secondcaliper for a handbrake, except for one thing. The brackets for theWilwoods don't quite line upwith the Wisefab stuff. There's a little bit ofinterference with the bracket, and these ears on both of them,so I'm gonna have to doa little bit of trimmingto the brackets. It's gonna take a little time, but it's gonna be cool once it's all done.(moderate music)(metal banging)- Pop.(metal clicks)There we go.Okay, we're back in the car.Let's test fit the one piece, handbrake, bracket combo.(steering wheel chimes)(Nolan revving)Oh it doesn't sound like a VQ anymore,it's more like. (revving)(lever clanks)(Nolan revs)Sick, dude. We've come a long way, you know. There's been a lot of shotsof you shooting through window at me,where I'm usually mad.(scene flashes)- You good?- No.And right now, I'm feeling pretty good. The setup console box opens.(hip-hop music)Dude, this is sick. This is gonna be sweet.(upbeat music)- All right, so I whippedup a little bracket herefor the master cylinder for the handbrake. And basically we just need to weld itto the tunnel here, now.- Then we're gonna do some skids.- Skids for the kids, that's my new charity, please donate.Gotta scrape out all the seam sealer, and all the flammable stuff, then sand off the remaining paint,so we get some bare metal. You know the drill, youguys have been here before.(hip-hop music)(welder crackling)Oops.(alarm chimes)Fire, fire, fire.God. (honk)(hip-hop music)(welder crackling)Okay, that looks pretty good. We're nice and straight inline with the handbrake,so our rod will connect well. And I'm lined up with thishole in the bulkhead here,so I can run my line rightout that, down the bottomto the brakes. Now, we just gotta shorten our rod,so the length is right.(welder crackling)Whoa, buddy, that's what happens.I didn't turn on the gas. What a boner I am.(moderate music)(welder crackling)(rod sizzling)Yeah, we shortened up thisrod and now it should fit.And then it's time to do the lines. The most boring, worst part.Boring, dirty, think I'm gonna quit.(music stops)Yeah, I'm out of here.- Thanks for your work.- It's been real, you guys.Have a good life.(soft music)Bye.(metal clanking)- All right, I'ma loosenit up a little bit.(wire thuds)(metal clanking)Ow.Maybe I should have done thisbefore I put the caliper on.(moderate music)Another nice and convenientthing about this GK Tech kit,the lines are labeled.To-T piece, to caliper. There's no guessing.(metal clanks)I'm using our oldE-brake line as a pathwayfor our brand new hydro E-brake line. That way we have no issueswith clearance or anything,'cause it's just followingsomething the manufactureroriginally installed on the vehicle. So in theory should be no problems at all,we should be good to go assoon as I hang this thing up.- In order tofeed the line that Justinhas so cleanly placed under the car,we gotta drill a fat freaking holein our transmission tunnel so we can feedthe line-up through.Look at that.- It's bought.- Clean.- All right, watch those edges though.- And once weinstall it to the handbrake,we can cover it with the center console, and it'll look very clean.(vacuum humming)- Oh God, it stinks.Wassup, Nolan?- Jimmy found a perfect grommet.- Oh wow.(James laughs)- (laughs) I was like what the. (honk)(Nolan laughs)I was trusting you as the director.- I guess heneeds that shot real bad.(upbeat music)(machine humming)- Yatsi.Okay, we got a path, now we just gotta putthe parts through it.- Thought you saidyou were gonna leave.Change your mind?- Yeah, I don't know where I am,I don't really have anywhere to go.I just came back.I was hoping you'd forget.(fast-paced music)(line rustling)Just keep pushing and eventuallyyou know how it'll go.Can you see how I do thatwith my hand all wonky, just to give you the shot? You see that, Phil? You know how much I care about you.(fast-paced music)Okay, that'll work. The lines are run.Now I need to tighten up all my fittings, make sure we don't have any leaks, and then it's time for fluid and bleeding.(ominous music)Bleeding sucks anyway you think about it.Bleeding your blood, notreally usually very fun.Bleeding brakes, not a good time.If only we didn't need to bleed.(hip-hop music)- All right, let me fill it.We're going to add fluid tothe hydraulic braking system. But in order to get fluid in,you have to bleed the air out of it,so that it works effectively.Holding.- Okay, cranking.- So the idea is to keeppumping this handle, and then the fluid inside the reservoirgoes down into the lines, pushing the air outwhere Nolan's bleeding it on the caliper.- And closed.I think we're probably...Let's do one more.- Hold on, I gotta top it off.- Okay. And we wanna go until this lineis totally free of bubbles coming out, otherwise your pedal'sgonna feel a little spongy.- All right, I'm pumping.- Okay.Opening.And closed and that is a job done.Heck yeah, boys.(heroic music)- Okay, the handbrake is fully installed,it feels awesome, all the lines are run,the calipers are onand we bled everything. So feels like it should work. But I mean, we should test it, right?I'm gonna start the car,put it in first gear, get the rear wheels spinningand then put the clutch in,so they're just kinda coasting. Then I'll yank thehandbrake and the wheelsshould come to a screeching halt.I mean, after all I installed this. (honk)So. (laughs)(car engine whistling)(car engine revving)(sci-fi music)(lever chimes)Did it work?- Yep.- Hell yeah, let's go skid.(hip-hop music)(falcon hawking)- We loaded up and headed outto the track for our final testing daywith the now fully drift-ready Z's.Today, it was back to the skid padfor some super slideytests and comparisons.(car engine revving)- Time to test our handbrakes.Down there is Nolan in the Low Car.Right here is a line.Nolan is gonna try and lockup the tires of that caras close to this line as possible, then we're gonna do it.Whoever's closer wins.(techno music)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)- It looked like his rear tires locked upthe second he pulled thestick which is what you want.(car engine revving)(tires screeching)I'm sure you guys are as impressed as me.Their handbrake works andit looks like it works good.- That was just with asingle piston caliper. So I'm really curious to seehow High Car's four pistonhandbrake works by comparison.- Time to see how High Cars does.(techno music)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)- I think it's taking a while to engage.(tires screeching)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)Well, with a lot offorce it seems to work.Nolan, how much effortwould you say it took you?(James laughs)- I mean, it was prettymuch as soon as you pull it,you feel resistance and you trust it.- I think, yours' worse, was a lot less effort.- Yeah.- Once we get back to the shop,I do want to dig into it,and see if we can get itto be a little bit better. As it turns out, ourmassive four piston caliperswere a bit more than ourhandbrake could handle. The force of me pulling on the leverwas spread out over a wider area.So the rear wheels werea little bit sluggishin coming to a complete stop. But it still worked way betterthan the stock handbrakethat was in High Car.(car engine revving)(Jimmy grunts)(Jimmy grunts in slow motion)That's both hands pulling.(Nolan laughs)It don't work.So to see who would fare betterin a real life drifting scenario,we set up this reincarnationof the Buff Horseshoefrom last season.- It's kind of likethe final showdown herebetween Low Car and High Car.- As a control, each car would initiatea slide without the handbrake, and then they'd run it a second time, and initiate with the handbrake.- And to see if we can see a difference,he's gonna see if hecan feel a difference.- And we're just gonna try tosee which one looks cooler.- I mean, that's reallywhat drifting is about.- It really is.- What looks cooler.(electro music)(car engine revving)- Stop, kick and clutch.- Stops.(car engine revving)(tires screeching)Okay, he's taking that good angle, taking it close to close.Oh this thing's hot.(car engine revving)(tires screeching)That was pretty sick.(tires screeching)- Well, that was pretty good. Now, let's see what Low Team can do.(tires screeching)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)(hands clapping)- All right, Nolan.- He nailed it.(tires screeching)- Did pretty well without the handbrake.- Yeah.- Let's see if it's any cleaner,or any easier with the handbrake.(car engine revving)(tires screeching)(car engine revving)- That was cool.I think it looked coolbecause he locked it up,and then went to the oversteer. So it was like, there's a drift.- I mean, the handbrakefeels a little bit lazy,to be honest with ya.So the entry wasn't as sharp as I'd like. You know, when you kickout nice and strong, but it worked.I think his E-brake initiation is gonna goa little bit smoother than mine.Really had to yank on it to get it out, which kinda sucks.(tires screeching)(car engine revving)(tires screeching)(car engine revving)- Damn, dude.- That's my boy.(hands clapping)You saw those rear tires just lock up,just like you want, and then he just coachedher right through.- The transition from handbrake slidingto getting on the powerand having the rear step upfeels really natural.I feel like I got prettyclose to the cones,at a decent angle. This thing rules.Drifting is awesome, I wanna do it again.(electro music)(car engine revving)- Boys, does moreexpensive mean more better?(everyone grunts)- I don't think so.- Don't think so.- Don't really think so.- Unfortunately.I wanted to.- Thank you for watching this video, and every other video on Donut Media.(techno music)We're making stuff all the time. And you should make stuff.Go to a garage and get awrench and some friends.Call your mom, she misses you.- Hey, since this is the High, Low finale,we designed a super cool posterwith the help of Subclass.Super low price points, everyone can have it.Put it on your shop wall, put it on your bedroom wall, wherever.Get yours today.High, Low, baby, thankyou so much for watching.
