The Challenge of Installing Mac OS 9: A Technical Nightmare

freaking darker but we're going to work with it and click the freaking refresh button and is something going to happen hello just knocked over my drink um I tried refresh and nothing showed up let's try one more time just going to hard shut it down all right boot it back up and hold down the c key I think C is our shortcut to boot off a CD you know what I just realized ized this disc may not be compatible well no it it should be because should it I don't even know this computer might be too new for os9 let's boot up and see what happens piss off w't let me hit hey whoa whoa whoa yeah remember those Mac ads that made fun of the user account control and windows yeah look familiar all right well let's see if we can do in stall MAA was not uh okay that's the thing we need tiger on here cuz leopard is not going to accept classic so I need to Rifle through my CDs and find a tiger installer this should be fun all right Plan B we have a Mac OS 10 installer but it's version 10.1 so it may be too old for this system to recognize but we're going to try it if it doesn't work don't worry I have a plan C all right throw it in let's restart hold down the C Key C as in narian that is a real word look it up if you've never studied biology you probably have never heard it before but it starts with a C languages don't have to make sense do they I don't Apple VNC server like deny deny deny deny cancel or allow cancel or allow deny you are denied I am suie Orman you are denied you cannot afford it deny okay cat there's a cat in the binary folder there we go install Mac OS 10 I knew I'd find it eventually the application quit unexpectedly uh-huh yeah it sure did I have a feeling I can't launch this on such a new system so I might have to find another way to boot off the disc we're still on Plan B guys we're still on Plan B this is good wait oh well that doesn't sound right I know I'm not trying to prevent pregnancy oh my we need to come up with a different name for this some time so let's put it to good you what what is that hang on a second well that's crazy how long has there been cracks here I going to have to check some old videos and see if those were always there or if those just came out of nowhere son of a paid a lot of good money for this thing anyway yes the iBook G3 clamshell I actually did a different episode of vintage Apple tours on this sucker so you can check that out too but now let's see if we can get Mac os9 on here I don't even know what's on here currently it helps if we plug in the power significantly oh Jesus this this cable doesn't guys heard that right the head was just going clink CL clink clink you know and now it's booting up I I have no idea you gave me like a heart attack there for a sec well mechanical hard drives huh I don't miss them one bit loud noisy slow good times you have inserted a disc containing no volumes uh I didn't plug anything in but thanks for asking it looks like yeah we got some old Adobe apps on here along with some old office apps all right fantastic so we have Panther let's see if alongside that we can install Macos 9 now this one is not as cool it's a tray loading disc drive can you hear that hang on I want you to listen that doesn't sound right let's try that coming out now yikes all right well this thing is probably on its last legs so let's use it while we can in you go and yes I did check this is the maximum brightness of the display you kids today are so lucky to have LEDs now this may have been brighter at one time and it wore out that's certainly possible and by the way if you're not a kid and you're watching this that's awesome I did not mean to offend you hopefully I didn't that was a generalization all right install OS 921 yes all right so the classic environment is now initializing as you can see in the dock there oh now what's this classic cannot update the files in system folder on the install CD cuz it's read only well of course it's read only it's a CD it's okay um maybe we can install this straight up just not as a separate partition per se it's kind of like they both install on the same partition but it's two separate operating systems it's kind of different how it works so yeah let's uh quit that that was a waste of 5 minutes okay we're going to try something else we're going to restart and try booting off the CD directly option key I love this keyboard by the way the translucent key caps oh yeah so cool all right let's see if it comes up and Bingo was his Neo check that out we actually have the CD showing up all right let's click on there and smash the arrow magic work please Hallelujah there we go we got a happy Mac face that's a good sign oh gosh this is glorious check out that CD background image oh my gosh all right guys check it out this is kind of like how a Linux Live CD works I mean I can actually use the operating system once it loads you can't do that with OS 10 actually not that you really need to anymore but yes with Mac OS 9 and I believe Mac OS 8 you could actually use the operating system right off the CD without installation so pretty fascinating yes late breaking news yes I'm sure that is very current and up to date all right Mac OS install and please work please just work oh my gosh love the old splash screen Hopscotch yes there is a problem with a program file could not open the language RI file because of an error make sure you are using the original CD or floppy discs I am using the CD this is sad this is really really sad I'm sad and you should be sad too quit I guess not like I had any other options well that's a bit of a downer huh I don't know what the difference is between these two but let's just try it I have used this installer before um but now that I think about it this is for a G4 no whoa okay um whatever let's just say all other countries United Kingdom Australia all other countries yes let's just generalize all of those other countries there this disc must be from a different country I don't know all right well this seems to be working so far four steps let's hit continue step one select destination disc the system folder on 2051 is not valid make sure the system folder is valid how the do I do that like just knock on its door be like hey you valid no you're fired what does that mean make sure it's valid then click the options button and select the perform clean installation checkbox what there's a white square there you can suck my clock all right I have developed a new strategy this is plan C3 or something I forgot where we are actually I'm guessing the error message is happening because of the newer system that's already on here and I swear that I have used that CD to install on a G3 processor before so I don't think the processor compatibility is a problem I think it's something on the hard drive see what I'm going to try to do here is split the hard drive into two partitions and see if ma 99's inst staler will accept a blank partition don't you just miss the brush to metal all right disc utility come and save us Gathering dis information well do it faster all right this is oh my gosh it's a 5.6 gab hard drive apparently this 5.6 gabes available after formatting so it's probably a 6 gig hard drive um okay this disc contains the boot volume and cannot be partitioned okay um it looks like we're just going to have to format the whole disc so that is what I'm going to try next standby oh Plan D involves a gun by the way for the computer I'm going to shoot the computer yes and it's a BB gun you can't break the skin with that that was kind of a reference if anyone got that comment below you'll get five cookies all right so we're back in Mac OS 9 I'm going to try formatting this disc and see if the installer will allow you to install the software I'm taking a bit of a gamble because even if it doesn't work the disc is still formatted yay to gambling Mac standard Mac extended uh I don't even know what standard really is someone tell me learn me something erase oh I can't watch is that it there's like a Band-Aid you just rip it off quick let's scroll down install 921 and if it doesn't work I'm going to be sad this is the part where I think it got blown up last time so I'm going to click hey check that out ladies and gentlemen it was probably worth it I don't think I had anything important on that disc did I all right honey I put all the honeymoon photos on this awesome new computer I really freaking love it hey 6 gigs ought to be enough space for a long time just remind me about that before I eras the hard drive and give away the computer oh wait a minute that's right I'm not married well then whose honeymoon photos are these nah no no no no I I couldn't have had anything important on that disc um clean installation not needed anymore yep iBook HD select there was a problem with a program file could not open the S SW license file because of an error what what but the the license file is like right here in the background I can see it I can see it oh we got one step further what one step further oh do I really need to read the software license come on you know if there's anything that really pisses me off and trust me a lot of things do it's when an error occurs but the computer just says because of an error like can you give me any specifics is the disc damaged am I out of memory am I out of common sense just tell me help me fix the problem don't just tell me there's a problem help me fix the problem all right let's try this other application here yo okay this is the file that was talking about okay the end user license agreement thing let's read it please read carefully okay I agree of course I agree just work are you I'm going to punch this okay all right calm down calm down okay okay how come we always get like a step further each time and then it it still ends up crashing we get a step further each time there is a problem with a program file could not open the install mod file because of an error make sure you are using the original C this is the original CD I don't get it um let's just pretend we're in the United Kingdom maybe that will work better we might be okay oh oh oh holy balls it's actually doing something oh updating drivers isn't it great when things just work and of course right when I step away for 2 seconds the application installer engine could not be opened doesn't tell me why doesn't tell me how to fix the problem it just says it could not be opened okay okay huh yeah well I tried it again it is not working so maybe third times the charm right let's try it once more and then I'll try the other installer one other time there seems to be like two installers on here or something I don't know okay so that's not working let's try let's close this let's go back down here open this up and I'm I'm going to choose a different country setting that seems to give us more luck so I'm going to pretend I'm from the UK go go go go yes I agree blah blah blah and start let's see what happens nope installer engine cannot be opened okay I do not think I have another Mac OS 9 disc which is unfortunate we are on plan e now you didn't see the gun thing because that was way too violent for YouTube anyway yes the iMac G4 the old Pixar Luxo lamp you know very awesome swivel display computer and ergonomic mouse pad what it's for ergonomics absolutely I need that for my mouse so now that we're all comfortable with our ergonomics we can operate this computer but first let's power on somewhere back here there it is ah yes I have not booted this thing up in probably at least a year it's been a while wow this mouse pad just Glides anyway it looks like we have leopard on here okay so this computer is already split between leopard and it looks like an OS 10 tiger partition so before we continue I noticed there was a previous systems folder in the root of the tiger partition I don't exactly remember how that got there but that basically means there's an entire file system stored on here still so we're at 4.4 gigs now but after these like 25,000 plus files are deleted I'm sure we're going to get some space back so before I continue I'm going to let the finder take care of that mess about 40,000 items to delete all right o it's actually chugging along pretty quick option key boy deja vu all right let's uh oh oh that's the leopard and tiger let's give it a sec there's the CD we got the little watch icon just let it go away I don't know the we kind of have a Dutch angle thing going on here H whatever it's art so here we are os 9.2 okay desktop is loading love the wallpaper um oh okay let's go back and do it through OS 10 with the classic panel how many Hoops have we jumped through are we like a we like a show dog or like a show Pony or something like that okay here we are back in Tiger I took the disc out and classic startup is actually loading hm yeah I think I had it on here at one point like I was saying earlier so that's not going to work okay Mac OS install let's see this does something start classic okay we might oh um there is no volume with a Macos 9 system folder um okay so how can I install if the installer hangs okay so I am just accepting the fact that something is really weird with that CD so I took the liberty to download a Mac Mac OS 922 Universal install ISO from a mysterious location on the internet uh you can read the tab not anymore ha so yeah that's downloading now it's at 208 megabytes of question mark megabytes so I'll put that on a CD and see if it works yay I cannot remember the last time I had to use this super Drive anyhow here we go so I have the image on the computer here and we are going to burn this sucker and here we go burning dis image Mac OS 922 Universal install ISO you want to watch the whole thing you know you do okay this all right ladies and gentlemen I downloaded an ISO from the internet and now I have a mechis 9 install a CD and we'll see if this works my hopes are very low oh okay this is different this isn't this doesn't look very official the well-tempered Mac OS without a capital S 2013 well ooh Pinstripes okay the image was called Mac os9 lives so I didn't think it would be super official in the first place but as as long as it works and I personally don't think software that is like 19 years old would have issues with piracy at this point so I hope this is kosher right it's all good okay so it looks like to use this third party install or whatever it is I will need to format the tiger partition but no worries we can install tiger again later okay so we're going to switch the disc to os10 Tiger erase before blah blah blah same as selected configuration and restore let's see the operation will erase the volume okay we're going to hit okay and so far so good I just jinxed it didn't I well I don't know let's let's let it run all right I'm going to get some Scotch piece of pizza and and we'll be back after would be too easy that can't happen I know older Macintosh systems were capable of being bootable just by dragging and dropping the root contents into another Drive I've done that I don't know if OS 9 will do that but let's do it for shits and giggles ah the old barber pole well the operation seems to have Frozen up I'm going to try to abort that okay I think that's just because it's trying to copy contents off of the CD and it's trying to run the operations off the CD and it just ran out of memory or some I I really don't know so we are going to try doing the copy from a different operating going to give me some crazy error stupid Mouse I don't know if I can mount an IMG file I couldn't in Sierra but maybe I can in leopard I'm just going to ghetto copy this like that the odds of this working are zero in zero but I've done this for a very old system once before it was like Macintosh system 608 or something it goes way back so the rules have probably changed multiple Generations later but it's worth a shot okay I'm trying to keep my sanity I am downloading yet another image of nine this particular one is 921 in a seven zip format so H oh my gosh hopefully this one freaking works so every attempt has failed so far so I got another image of os9 it looked a lot less third partyish so hopefully take two will work I think this is Plan G golf okay power on eject this thing really pisses me off and trust me a lot of things do it's when an error occurs but the computer just says because of an error like can you give me any specifics is the disc damaged am I out of memory didn't see the gun thing because that was way too violent for YouTube anyway yes the iMac G4 the old Pixar Luxo lamp you know very awesome swivel display computer and ergonomic mouse pad what it's for ergonomics absolutely I need that for my mouse so now that we're all comfortable with our ergonomics we can operate this computer but first let's power on somewhere back here there it is ah yes I have not booted this thing up in probably at least a year it's been a while wow this mouse pad just Glides anyway it looks like we have leopard on here okay so this computer is already split between leopard and it looks like an OS 10 tiger partition so before we continue I noticed there was a previous systems folder in the root of the tiger partition I don't exactly remember how that got there but that basically means there's an entire file system stored on here still so we're at 4.4 gigs now but after these like 25,000 plus files are deleted I'm sure we're going to get some space back so before I continue I'm going to let the finder take care of that mess about 40,000 items to delete all right o it's actually chugging along pretty quick option key boy deja vu all right let's uh oh oh that's the leopard and tiger let's give it a sec there's the CD we got the little watch icon just let it go away I don't know the we kind of have a Dutch angle thing going on here H whatever it's art so here we are os 9.2 okay desktop is loading love the wallpaper um oh okay let's go back and do it through OS 10 with the classic panel how many Hoops have we jumped through are we like a we like a show dog or like a show Pony or something like that okay here we are back in Tiger I took the disc out and classic startup is actually loading hm yeah I think I had it on here at one point like I was saying earlier so that's not going to work okay Mac OS install let's see this does something start classic okay we might oh um there is no volume with a Macos 9 system folder um okay so how can I install if the installer hangs okay so I am just accepting the fact that something is really weird with that CD so I took the liberty to download a Mac Mac OS 922 Universal install ISO from a mysterious location on the internet uh you can read the tab not anymore ha so yeah that's downloading now it's at 208 megabytes of question mark megabytes so I'll put that on a CD and see if it works yay I cannot remember the last time I had to use this super Drive anyhow here we go so I have the image on the computer here and we are going to burn this sucker and here we go burning dis image Mac OS 922 Universal install ISO you want to watch the whole thing you know you do okay this all right ladies and gentlemen I downloaded an ISO from the internet and now I have a mechis 9 install a CD and we'll see if this works my hopes are very low oh okay this is different this isn't this doesn't look very official the well-tempered Mac OS without a capital S 2013 well ooh Pinstripes okay the image was called Mac os9 lives so I didn't think it would be super official in the first place but as as long as it works and I personally don't think software that is like 19 years old would have issues with piracy at this point so I hope this is kosher right it's all good okay so it looks like to use this third party install or whatever it is I will need to format the tiger partition but no worries we can install tiger again later okay so we're going to switch the disc to os10 Tiger erase before blah blah blah same as selected configuration and restore let's see the operation will erase the volume okay we're going to hit okay and so far so good I just jinxed it didn't I well I don't know let's let's let it run all right I'm going to get some Scotch piece of pizza and and we'll be back no that would be too easy that can't happen I know older Macintosh systems were capable of being bootable just by dragging and dropping the root contents into another Drive I've done that I don't know if OS 9 will do that but let's do it for shits and giggles ah the old barber pole well the operation seems to have Frozen up I'm going to try to abort that okay I think that's just because it's trying to copy contents off of the CD and it's trying to run the operations off the CD and it just ran out of memory or some I I really don't know so we are going to try doing the copy from a different operating system but first let's delete this okay ladies and gentlemen everything is screwed up but we're going to try to make something happen oh I just realized I probably can't this image oh it's probably going to give me some crazy error stupid Mouse I don't know if I can mount an IMG file I couldn't in Sierra but maybe I can in leopard I'm just going to ghetto copy this like that the odds of this working are zero in zero but I've done this for a very old system once before it was like Macintosh system 608 or something it goes way back so the rules have probably changed multiple Generations later but it's worth a shot okay I'm trying to keep my sanity I am downloading yet another image of nine this particular one is 921 in a seven zip format so H oh my gosh hopefully this one freaking works so every attempt has failed so far so I got another image of os9 it looked a lot less third partyish so hopefully take two will work I think this is Plan G golf okay power on eject this don't know does anyone have any idea why this is happening I've gotten OS 9 installed on here before I swear I used Classic on this system but it does not want to does not want to respond okay well now tiger is that disc has been formatted so now not even that's on here all we have left is leopard and that has no classic support whatsoever so this computer is now getting crossed off the list and we will have to move to plan H which I don't even know the NATO phonetic alphabet word for because we've gotten past seven I thought seven was all we would need so ladies and gentlemen boys and girls
