PlayStation Portal - Is It ACTUALLY Worth It (Full Review)

**A Case for Gaming Handhelds: My Experience with the PS5**

As I sat down to write about my experience with the PS5 gaming handheld, I realized that there aren't many options available on Amazon. I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get their hands on this device before it became a popular item. However, I've come to realize that not everyone needs or wants a dedicated device like this, and that's perfectly fine.

One of my biggest concerns with using this device is protecting the screen from scratches. The design of the handheld makes it prone to scratches, which is a major concern for me. I don't want to risk damaging the screen, especially since it's not easy to repair or replace. I've seen reviews and unboxing videos online, but I'm still hesitant to throw it into my backpack without proper protection.

**Gaming Experience: Not as Smooth as Expected**

When it comes to gaming, this handheld device has its limitations. It doesn't have access to features like remote play, PS+ streaming, or even a basic level of meta functionality. This means that I won't be able to stream games from my TV or access online multiplayer modes without some serious technical wizardry. However, the device does allow for offline gaming, which is a major plus.

I've had a chance to try out some popular games on this handheld, and while it's not as smooth of an experience as playing on a dedicated console like the PS5, it's still enjoyable. The graphics are crisp, and the controls are responsive, even if they're not exactly what I'd call perfect. Overall, it's a decent gaming experience, but it's not going to blow me away.

**Is This Device Worth $200?**

So, is this device worth the $200 price tag? For some people, absolutely. If you're someone who wants to play games on-the-go and doesn't need access to all the bells and whistles of a dedicated console, then this might be the perfect device for you. However, if you're like me and want a device that can handle demanding games with ease, then you might want to look elsewhere.

I've personally decided that I'm happy with this device because it meets my specific needs. As someone who wants to play games before bed without disturbing others in the household, this handheld is perfect for me. It's like having a mini console that I can take with me wherever I go. The only downside is that it's not as sturdy or durable as I would like, but that's a minor complaint.

**Comparison to Other Devices**

I've also had some comments from viewers asking about the device's comparison to other options on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy Back cover. While both devices offer some similar functionality, there are key differences between them. The Samsung Galaxy phone case is more like a phone with gaming capabilities added on, whereas this handheld device is a dedicated gaming console that can be played in multiple ways.

When it comes to remote play, for example, I can access the device's screen by connecting my phone to it using a special adapter. However, the experience isn't quite the same as playing on a dedicated console like the PS5. The display is smaller, and the controls are different, even if they do provide a decent gaming experience.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, while this PS5 handheld device has its limitations, I'm still happy to have it in my life. It meets my specific needs, and I've had no major complaints about its performance. However, for those who need more power or want access to all the bells and whistles of a dedicated console, there might be better options available.

If you're one of those people who are desperate for a gaming handheld device, this might be worth checking out. Just keep in mind that it's not perfect, and there are some significant limitations to its capabilities.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enyeah I'm not mad at this like I forget the video I want to play right now what's going on guys it's your average consumer and you've probably seen a ton of different PlayStation portal videos a lot of folks's First Impressions uh getting an idea of how it works all that stuff but your boy has had it for a couple weeks now and I'm pretty familiar with this little guy and I think I know exactly who it's for so let's talk about it but for the folks who might have been living under a rock you don't know exactly what we're talking about here this is the new PlayStation portal this is Sony's PS5 accessory not to be confused and think this is some kind of handheld this is not a v to you guys even though we all want that that's not what this is this is an accessory for the PS5 dedicated to remote play but if you guys want to learn more about what it actually is and what what it's intended for I'll have videos Down Below in the description for you to check out unboxing videos all that good stuff but today we're going to be talking about what it's like to actually use this thing so right now this PlayStation portal is hooked up to my PlayStation at home so we're in the studio right now but this one's connected to my personal home PS5 I got to say with my time playing this thing I've really enjoyed using it it feels really comfortable to hold in the hand for me if you've seen a dual sense controller um honestly it feels exactly like that honestly I feel like I like it a little bit more even this is what we're all typically used to but I've been experiencing a lot of handheld action these days and I've gotten used to the idea of like you know a much bigger device now this guy is rocking an 8in display so if you've seen some of the other handhelds that have come out recently it's not too far off so there have been quite a few handhelds recently that have come come out now we're not going to be comparing this to any of these because they're vastly different in what they're supposed to do but when it comes from an ergonomics perspective this is probably amongst the best which makes me sad because this could have been the best feeling portable console but it's an accessory we'll stick with that so if you're familiar with the Dual sense Edge controller you've got all the same controls here except for like the touchpad the touchpad is is built into the actual touchcreen it's not in the same spot it's you got to reach a little bit more for it but how often do you even interact with the touchpad he's crying we invented the whole touchpad don't take it away they'll take it away that's on the developers ghost of sushima you use it quite a bit now of course this is a little bit more than a dual sense controller so you got a few more other buttons uh you also have like your power button your PlayStation link button so that you can pair it with like a pair of pul explores uh you also have your volume control since this has built-in speakers as well as your USBC port and 3.5 mm Jack at the bottom but yeah aside from that everything else is exactly the same except for those additions now no question might be what is the actual interface when you're not just on the PS5 and if you haven't seen it yet let me show you so I'm going to disconnect from my PS5 over here and this is is pretty much it there's really not much to it all you can really do here is connect to your PS5 now you do have access to some settings so if you have multiple ps5s you can actually tap here and select the PS5 you want to connect to so I can select from a list which one I want to connect to which is actually kind of cool did you did you go through that many uh pairing process no so I've only paired this one with actually I didn't pair it at all all you have to really really do is make sure you have the settings on in your PS5 to make sure you allow access to remote play and then with this once you sign in you pretty much get access to your list of ps5s so the PS5 and the and this doesn't need to be Wi-Fi the node because I actually set this up at home but the PS5 here in the studio still shows up on the list so it's all tied to your account set a process is really simple it's really easy you just pull out the app and you get it set up really quick to get it started so you select the PS5 that you want once you pick it it'll say paired but like you're not like pairing it like through Bluetooth or anything it just knows that's the PS5 you're going to connect to and you also have like your Wi-Fi indicator over here battery life time you can press the settings button over here now you won't always have that setting button when you're playing games so another way to get into it is swiping in that right corner and there's not much here you can control your brightness put it in Airplane Mode access to a couple of settings network some system stuff brightness now you're not going to find Bluetooth on here because like a dual sense controller there's no Bluetooth uh so there's none of that but yeah this is the interface and once you want to log into your PS5 you selected it you just press connect so right now it's going to try and connect to my PS5 at home it I've noticed that it's pretty random in terms of like how long it takes sometimes it's like super quick and we're going to talk about those connectivity things a little bit later but the portal opens up and boom you're into your system uh but it doesn't turn your TV on when it connects does it no and as you see I connected to this even if it was in rest mode and I powered it on it wouldn't turn on my TV even if I make it go into rest mode from this it's not going to turn off the TV so you don't have to worry about anybody freaking out that the TV just turned on and your PlayStation's going even if you're not home now one thing to note if you're worried about hitting that power button while you're connected uh if you press it quickly enough or maybe if you put down the portal for just a few moments uh you can actually jump back in press the power button and you're still going to be connected however if you take too long you'll lose your connection and have to reconnect to your PS5 all right now let's get to it right what's it like to actually play games on this I got to say you guys I spent a lot of time playing Final Fantasy 16 and the experience has been very dependent on the Wi-Fi situation and when the connection is solid like look at this right now this is beautiful baby this looks great so when you've got a solid connection listen it's like you are playing your PlayStation 5 right on this it looks good it feels good you get all of the haptics from the Dual sense it's a really awesome experience and honestly it's everything I would want from a device like this but it is all dependent on the kind of internet connection you've got your PS5 connected with now you'll notice I said the PS5 and not the portal right so the PlayStation has to have a solid upload connection and I believe Sony said the minimum requirements are like 5 megabits up but I think the range is like 5 to 15 15 on the higher end so that you're getting like Smooth high quality the entire time uh but obviously you know not everyone has a solid upload speed us over here we've got a maximum of 40 megabits up and you're not always going to get that 40 Dom what are we always hovering around for the PS5 about 12 to 15 at the best wired so our personal Internet situation is pretty trash uh and at home for me it's the same sadly I don't have access to the strongest upload speeds at home or even here um but that is like one of the most important parts because the PS5 has to send that streaming information over to the portal download speeds like you got to have solid download speeds to you know take that information in that's easy like getting solid download is fine it's the upload that's going to kill you and I know there's a lot of people out there who don't have strong upload speeds and that's where the Killer is now me personally I found that playing at night has always been a pretty solid experience I mean it kind of makes sense you know you've got less people on the connection doing stuff uh so that always leads to a pretty solid experience for me but what I want to highlight here is I'm not at home I'm not at home I am in my studio and I'm still able to play Final Fantasy 16 because this is running off of a dis so I don't have access to it anywhere else but I'm able to play it here and I love that like access that's what's really key here so if there are any questions about like you know what if you're playing somewhere and you've got a solid internet connection like I don't know like a hotel or something or a friend's house you can do it now some of you might be wondering okay Wi-Fi is fine but what if we want to connect our phones what if I want to go on a road trip and play my PS5 at home can I just use my hot spot and play the answer is yes let me show you now we're outside in some random parking lot you're going to want to know how does remote play work all right so I'm on T-Mobile and actually let's do a quick speed test right dang T-Mobile going hard that's not even like full bar yeah has three bars dang phone doing better than the studio so clearly we should be all set when it comes to connecting this to the Internet so let's go ahead get it on the hot spot and it should ah it's already connected because it I've done this before so we're connected to the phone let's go ahead and try to connect to our PS5 now this is still the PS5 at my place all right once you hear that chime that means you're connected and you're ready to play press your X boom oh man this looks really clean so we've got a really solid connection I guess maybe nobody is doing anything crazy at home and guys when it works man it looks really good like I said it's like playing the PS5 in your hands 1080p bother you at all 1080p doesn't bother me at all when you're looking at a screen this small there's very there's honestly little room to complain all right so we got a fight real quick let's do this all right so this can be a pretty fast-paced game and that's the only that's my only gripe I don't know if you guys can hear it but sometimes when you're playing even with a solid connection like this the audio might you know cut out here and there that speakers the speakers are decent the speakers are decent for sure like you you can hear that just fine I'm not I'm not that mad at it maybe it could be louder the only thing is is that they're firing upward so when you go like this you'll hear it more the speakers are going upward it would have been nice if it maybe faced like it sent the audio towards your face but it's not something that's going to Impact gameplay I mean we're playing freaking Final Fantasy 16 in my car in a random parking lot I'm not going to be mad at a little Jitter here and there that means nothing to be able to do what we're doing right now so yeah you you can take this thing on the go pretty much play it wherever you want as long as you've got a good connection so the portability side of things this thing definitely does a good job now in terms of how long you can actually play the battery life is decent I mean I feel like you can get a 5H hour session and that's what we've kind of been seeing a lot of now if you're having way longer sessions than that on this I'd be pretty surprised but this isn't the kind of device I think you spend like a ton of time on when playing something like this you think in put lag is going to be a serious issue so far from what I've seen whenever I'm playing and the TV is on like from my testing everything looks really instant there's no serious input lag that I can detect but do I trust myself playing Apex on something like this I don't know if I do well no I I wouldn't for the simple fact that if there's any you know frame drops or connection issues that's going to get me killed instantly you don't want to play those kind of games like I said with something like this now as some of you may know the PlayStation pulse explorers are also a thing uh it's very very easy to connect them to this uh usually when you've got these headsets from PlayStation they've got like a dongle the experience is usually pretty seamless and the same thing goes here with this new PlayStation link button all you do is press this press the link button up top here you pair them up pretty quickly and easily and honestly it sounds pretty good now I'm probably going to cover this in a separate video so you guys can see if it's worth the 200 bucks at this cost and while we're on the topic of accessories this is a big boy right and I wish there was like a case for it I mean I mean I know cases are going to be coming on Amazon like 3 2 1 probably before you see this video but as of right now there aren't many options I think that's the only thing I'm struggling with with this I don't want to just throw it inside of my backpack cuz I don't want the screen to get scratched up I've got this thing we opened the in a massive Tech unboxing not too long ago but it's made for these gaming handhelds so if you are desperate this works I'll link it down below now obviously when it comes to gaming you can do all of that but on the media side of things you're not going to have access to any of those so this is the message that pops up you just can't stream like videos with remote play what about ps+ streaming I haven't tried that let's give that a look okay Cloud streaming PS5 so no streaming for that as well never tried it I'm glad you asked no streaming on top of streaming only do one level of it no meta stuff here so now that you know all that you know and all that I've told you who do I think this is actually for right now for me personally this is a must have like I'm so happy this exists do I wish it was a v 2 absolutely don't get me wrong but I'm happy to have some something like this nonetheless so this is like that nice bridge between not having the time to dedicate to like a full gaming session on the TV I can play this in bed now and that's usually when I get most of my gaming in these days that's why I gravitate towards all these handhelds like I like to play before I go to bed get a you know hour or two in I don't have to bother Arie by being in another room or maybe having the TV on really bright while she's trying to get some sleep I don't have to worry about the kids watching me play something like I don't know potentially violent or whatever I can just play in the comfort of my bed and it's been awesome now this also isn't going to be a device for everyone not everyone needs to be able to play their PS5 on a different device like not everyone is sharing the TV Dom doesn't need this device no Dom's got no kids Dom's got access to his TV all the time so he doesn't need a device like this because he can just play his PS5 I saw on the comment section that I wasn't alone there were a bunch of dads who were very excited that this thing existed now there's a cheaper option maybe you don't want a dedicated device for remote play maybe you want a nice little accessory so over here we've got the backbone like we've heard a lot of comments about the backbone being exactly what this is and in a way you can say that so over here I've got the Galaxy do I have to really take off the case I do so check it out can you do remote play on something like the backbone absolutely you can definitely do it but it's not the same experience this is not just the same thing but cheaper while it's nice it's half the price of this your phone's display is the display that you get to play these games if you don't have like a large display that means an even smaller screen for your game also the control rolls pale in comparison to what the Dual sense feels like this is not going to give you the feeling that you get from like a dual fense controller I guess the mindset is different like when you do with the phone you got to do process you take off phone cases and everything exactly that right like you got to like you said drop your case plug it in you're doing all that where this you know you just pick it up and boom you're playing I'm not trashing the backbone it's cool to be able to do this from your phone I'm just saying right now now the experience is very different it's simply better on this so is this thing worth the 200 bucks H now does everyone need to run out and spend $200 on this no we already talked about who could really benefit from it is it worth the $200 if you're one of those people absolutely now Sony did send this one to me but I bought my own I wanted it because it fit my needs but yeah that about wraps it up guys I like it I also want a v too but you guys let me know what you think Down Below in the comments I know a lot of people got their hands on it let me know what your experience has been like uh there's definitely limitations based on your own internet connection but so far I think it's good till next video guys your average consumer peace pulse explores we're going to be talking about that soon tooyeah I'm not mad at this like I forget the video I want to play right now what's going on guys it's your average consumer and you've probably seen a ton of different PlayStation portal videos a lot of folks's First Impressions uh getting an idea of how it works all that stuff but your boy has had it for a couple weeks now and I'm pretty familiar with this little guy and I think I know exactly who it's for so let's talk about it but for the folks who might have been living under a inside of my backpack cuz I don't want the screen to get scratched up I've got this thing we opened the in a massive Tech unboxing not too long ago but it's made for these gaming handhelds so if you are desperate this works I'll link it down below now obviously when it comes to gaming you can do all of that but on the media side of things you're not going to have access to any of those so this is the message that pops up you just can't stream like videos with remote play what about ps+ streaming I haven't tried that let's give that a look okay Cloud streaming PS5 so no streaming for that as well never tried it I'm glad you asked no streaming on top of streaming only do one level of it no meta stuff here so now that you know all that you know and all that I've told you who do I think this is actually for right now for me personally this is a must have like I'm so happy this exists do I wish it was a v 2 absolutely don't get me wrong but I'm happy to have some something like this nonetheless so this is like that nice bridge between not having the time to dedicate to like a full gaming session on the TV I can play this in bed now and that's usually when I get most of my gaming in these days that's why I gravitate towards all these handhelds like I like to play before I go to bed get a you know hour or two in I don't have to bother Arie by being in another room or maybe having the TV on really bright while she's trying to get some sleep I don't have to worry about the kids watching me play something like I don't know potentially violent or whatever I can just play in the comfort of my bed and it's been awesome now this also isn't going to be a device for everyone not everyone needs to be able to play their PS5 on a different device like not everyone is sharing the TV Dom doesn't need this device no Dom's got no kids Dom's got access to his TV all the time so he doesn't need a device like this because he can just play his PS5 I saw on the comment section that I wasn't alone there were a bunch of dads who were very excited that this thing existed now there's a cheaper option maybe you don't want a dedicated device for remote play maybe you want a nice little accessory so over here we've got the backbone like we've heard a lot of comments about the backbone being exactly what this is and in a way you can say that so over here I've got the Galaxy do I have to really take off the case I do so check it out can you do remote play on something like the backbone absolutely you can definitely do it but it's not the same experience this is not just the same thing but cheaper while it's nice it's half the price of this your phone's display is the display that you get to play these games if you don't have like a large display that means an even smaller screen for your game also the control rolls pale in comparison to what the Dual sense feels like this is not going to give you the feeling that you get from like a dual fense controller I guess the mindset is different like when you do with the phone you got to do process you take off phone cases and everything exactly that right like you got to like you said drop your case plug it in you're doing all that where this you know you just pick it up and boom you're playing I'm not trashing the backbone it's cool to be able to do this from your phone I'm just saying right now now the experience is very different it's simply better on this so is this thing worth the 200 bucks H now does everyone need to run out and spend $200 on this no we already talked about who could really benefit from it is it worth the $200 if you're one of those people absolutely now Sony did send this one to me but I bought my own I wanted it because it fit my needs but yeah that about wraps it up guys I like it I also want a v too but you guys let me know what you think Down Below in the comments I know a lot of people got their hands on it let me know what your experience has been like uh there's definitely limitations based on your own internet connection but so far I think it's good till next video guys your average consumer peace pulse explores we're going to be talking about that soon too\n"
