iPhone Widgets, MacOS Big Sur & a HISTORIC day for the Mac! WWDC 2020 Recap

Apple's WWDC 2020: The Big Reveal

The latest updates from Apple's WWDC 2020 conference have left users excited and eager to get their hands on the new features. One of the most notable announcements was the introduction of a new alarm sound for deep sleepers, allowing them to wake up with a loud, jarring noise without startling their partner. For those who don't have a partner, there's also an option to have the alarm vibrate, ensuring that the user wakes up without disturbing anyone else.

The biggest concern when using apps and services on the Internet is how much of your data is actually safe and how much of it is being collected and passed on to other parties. Apple has taken a tough stance on this issue over the last few years, making sure that users' privacy is of utmost importance. Last year, they announced tsiyon with Apple, which masks your own personal email address when you sign up for a new service. This year, they're instituting even more transparency over what data an app requires from a user. Before downloading an app from the App Store, users can now go into the app's privacy section to see the data that will be used to track them and the data linked to them.

One of the features that Apple likes the most is the new orange dot that appears on the top right corner of your phone whenever an app is using your microphone or camera. This way, users can tell if an app is secretly listening or watching in the background. Safari also has a new feature called a privacy report, which allows users to see which trackers are on a specific website by clicking on this icon.

The next version of Mac OS gets a name and will be called Mac OS Big Sir, based off of a stunning location along California's coastline. This Mac OS update has got to be the biggest in terms of aesthetics and UI design that we've seen in a long time. Apple is calling it the biggest design upgrade since the introduction of Mac OS 10. Take a look at this awesome wallpaper, but the design changes go even further, with subtle changes from different levels of transparency that signify different things.

The OS just feels fresh and light and modern, although it also has a bit of a retro thrown in the mix. Apple says this is on purpose to retain their Mac personality. The menu bar now features an all-new control center, which is reminiscent of iOS. Here, users can do things like turn Wi-Fi Bluetooth or Airdrop on and off, adjust brightness and sound, or turn on and do not disturb mode.

Safari actually gets an even bigger upgrade thanks to the introduction of extensions. One of the examples that really hits home is a new recipe extension, which solves a problem that many users have been ranting about especially during this time of COVID when cooking at home becomes necessary. When you visit a blog or a cooking website and want to just dive into the recipe, all you have to do is click on the extension and it pulls out just the ingredients and instructions.

One of the biggest news announcements from Apple today is that they're transitioning away from Intel chips to their own Apple silicon. This means that Apple will now be designing its own processors for its range of Mac computers, just like how they develop the Bionic chip from iPhones and iPads. So what does this mean to users? One word: optimization.

When you give Apple full rein to design the hardware and software, you allow them to optimize so that these two things are made for each other. In this case, they're trying to balance power efficiency and performance just like they do for their range of iPhones. So much so that even if you compare iPhones to Android phones and see that iPhones have smaller battery capacities and less RAM, why is it that iPhones work just as well? It's all about optimization.

Of course, with any new shift in processor, apps need to be rewritten for that specific platform. Apple says all of its apps are ready to go, including Final Cut Pro, and promises that the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office are already being worked on as we speak. "If Apple says you can expect new hardware with Apple silicon to start coming out before the end of the year," but says the transition should take up to two years.

Developer versions of all these new operating systems will be rolling out to developers today, but the general public will have to wait for later this fall. Those were the biggest announcements from WWDC 2020, and it's clear that Apple is committed to making its users' lives easier and more convenient with every new update.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys I'm Michael Josh and you're watching gadget match despite the koban 19 pandemic Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is still taking place this year but it's all happening online and that keynote event which kind of jumps starts the whole event just wrapped up it was a long three-hour presentation there's a lot of news to cover but don't worry we rounded up 10 of the most important announcements on today's keynote that you shouldn't miss it's kind of surreal sitting here in my living room post and Apple Keynote usually we're asked a Steve Jobs theater covering the event live but I've learned to accept that that's the new order of things you can really see how the coronavirus is changing the way not only the way we do things but the software experience as well growing up watching Apple keynotes I've always been a fan and they've really been the gold standard for keynotes everywhere but I've got to say I really did enjoy Apple's format this year from the creative camera angles the lighting the smooth transitions to the Mission Impossible esque feel and I'm not alone on Twitter many of my friends shared the same view some even said they'd rather stay home next year just so Apple could keep doing it this way now because it's all happening online anybody who wants to attend dub-dub 2020 sessions can do so for free and you've got to give Apple credit for pushing through with this event Facebook and Google had developer events also scheduled this year but canceled them due to the Cova crisis now when it comes to the software experience it's pretty clear that the coronavirus has also left its mark apart from the many new ways to customize your own emoji including use hairstyles occupations to choose from and age options you now can also wear a mask the Apple watch also gets a ton of new features including a new hand-washing detection mode basically sensors on your watch can tell if your hands are in the process of washing it will then turn on the mic to listen for the sound of flowing water and then the app will kick in to start a twenty second timer to tell you keep on going or you're good to go your hands are clean of course if there's a one take away from all of this is that you should wash our hands and as always the next big feature doesn't really have a name I'm calling it compact UI but it's basically a feature that we've seen on many separate announcements at the keynote today instead of taking up your whole screen when you get a FaceTime call or using the search function or talking to Siri all of these will just appear like a floating box on top of the screen so you don't lose context of whatever it is that you're doing and when it comes to incoming calls I like the way my friend Tommy puts it and I quote finally incoming calls won't take over my bloody screen while I'm trying to play candy crush another compact feature is called picture-in-picture you've seen this before on other phones basically if you're watching a video and you switch to another app that video will still have a res a little box on top of the app that you are currently using by the way I'm looking at the Apple website and the feature is indeed called compact UI great job MJ of course WWDC is a developer event so we're bound to talk about software and I'm just gonna point out what many of the haters will be pointing out in the comments section anyway iOS is getting some Android features but I will argue they're also doing it better one of the new features is widgets on the home screen previously widgets would be on a separate pane you'd have to swipe to get there now you can drag them to the home screen and they can live side by side with some of your favorite app icons there's also a new widget called smart stack that automatically shows a relevant widgets based upon the time of the day so for example it shows news when you wake up in the morning and maybe that's the end of the day it'll show you the activity screen so you'll know how many more steps need to log to complete those rings I know a lot of you guys will point out that witches have been available on Android for a long time now but to be honest I really wasn't a fan I and I hardly use them except for maybe the clock widget on my home screen but from an early look the Apple would just look like they're very useful there's smart and they are well designed and chances are I might start using widgets all over again Apple has never had an app door that's usually fine until you start downloading hundreds of apps and then your home screen begins to look like this an apple recognizes this there they're giving you a new feature called the app library first to let you hide all those extra pages of apps that you've lost track of and then automatically arranges these apps based on category or if you'd like you can also sort them alphabetically just when you started account theory out gee it got even smarter just like Google assistant Siri can now help you find answers to a broader set of questions on the Internet you can also now send audio messages translation is also a big thing in the iOS 14 update Siri can now translate between over 65 language pairs and supports a new translation app called translate what are the features that I've long been requesting for on iMessage has now arrived making this probably my most favorite announcement from this year's keynote messages now gets inline reply so that you can reply to a specific message in a conversation perfect if you're like me and you have multiple threads going on at the same time there's also a new mentions feature that lets you add someone in a group chat that can call out that specific person's attention speaking of group chats you can set a group photo using an image or the group or emojis of group members and for those special conversations you just don't want to miss you can now pin them to the top of the messages I gotta admit I was one of those users who stopped using Apple maps shortly after its subpar launch especially when it didn't measure up to the Google Maps gold standard but a long time has passed since and I encourage you to give couple maps another try it's getting better and there are a lot of improvements coming into maps in iOS 14 just the other day I thought to myself on one of my bike rides wouldn't it be great if Apple Maps actually got a cycling function well now it does Maps is now aware of bike lanes bike paths or bike friendly roads and will prioritize these bike friendly routes when you navigate for my friends who have electric cars there's also electric vehicle routing which will automatically add charging stops along your route there's also when you guides feature that will give you recommendations for the best places to eat or sites to visit whenever you're in a new city this might be a controversial statement but Apple watch is pulling further ahead as being the only device you really need to wear on your wrist this year Apple is adding support for even more workout types there's core trainings functional strength training there's cooldown and dance and I really love the way it was demonstrated at the keynote the watch can tell if you're moving just your hands or your legs or your hands and your legs together for me what's important is being able to use all those sensors in the Apple watch to properly measure all my different workouts so that I know my fitness data is as accurate as be a long requested feature is also here sleep tracking this was a feature I wanted last year when I was really looking into measuring the quality of my sleep and making adjustments that way using the new sleep tracking feature on watch OS 7 the Apple watch will use the watch's accelerometer to detect micro movements and combine it with other signals like how you're breathing during your sleep you'll then be able to go in and see how long you were in bed how long you were actually asleep you can do other things like set sleep goals how long you want to be sleeping when you want to be winding down I also like how you could use the Apple watch as an alarm clock you can choose to have it lick you up gently or as they refer to it effectively which I basically think is a loud alarm sound for those who are deep sleepers there's also an option to have it vibrate so that you don't wake up your partner and if you don't have a partner there's enough one of the biggest issues when it comes to using apps and services on the Internet is how much of your data is actually
