Installing 32 GB of Memory in a 2017 iMac: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hello and welcome to Apple World today! I'm excited to share with you how to install 32 GB of memory in one of our 2017 21.5-inch iMacs. This is an easy process that you can do yourself, and it's definitely worth considering if you want to upgrade your computer's memory without breaking the bank.

First things first, you'll need to order a 32 GB memory kit from OWC Mac Sales. The cost was around $300 for me, but keep in mind that if you were to order an iMac directly from Apple with this configuration, it would cost you $600 - that's a $300 savings right there! So, why wouldn't you want to do this yourself? Well, it's simple: you can save that $300 and still enjoy the benefits of having more memory in your computer.

Now, before we get started, make sure you have everything you need within arm's reach. You'll also want to cover your iMac screen with a soft surface, like a towel or cloth, to prevent any scratches. And, of course, it's always a good idea to turn on a light source so that you can see what you're doing clearly.

To begin, locate the memory module under the bottom of the iMac. You'll need to pop this off using your Swiss Army knife - yes, it's that easy! Once you've pried it open, raise up the leg and take out the two modules that come with the iMac. These only have 8 GB of memory each, so we'll be replacing them with our new OWC memory kit.

Now, let's talk about the importance of taking your time when installing the new memory cards. This is a bit tricky, as you need to align the clips on the motherboard correctly in order for everything to fit properly. If you can't see what you're doing, it might take some trial and error to get them just right. But don't worry - I'm here to guide you through it!

To start installing the new memory cards, take one of them out and insert it into its designated slot on the motherboard. Press it firmly into place until you hear a satisfying click. Make sure you've got it lined up correctly before moving on to the next one - we don't want any mistakes here! Once both are in place, simply push them back into their slots and press your cover shut.

And that's it! You now have an iMac with 32 GB of memory - four times what Apple would send you as the default configuration. This upgrade should make a noticeable difference in terms of performance, especially if you're running multiple applications at once or multitasking on a daily basis. So go ahead and save yourself $300, and get ready to experience your iMac like never before!
