The Inheritance Games: A Disappointing Debut

I recently finished reading "The Inheritance Games" by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and I must say that I was thoroughly underwhelmed by this book. The story follows Avery Greer, a young woman who has been left a mysterious inheritance by a man she has never met. As the family of her intended beneficiary, Avery is determined to uncover the truth behind the will and figure out why she has been cut out of the picture.

Unfortunately, I felt that the mystery plot was lacking in interest and depth. The family dynamics were also a letdown, with multiple sons competing for Avery's affections and creating a love triangle that I just didn't find compelling. I had expected more from a book titled "The Inheritance Games," but it seemed like this promise was not fully delivered on. The games and puzzles that the characters were supposed to solve throughout the story felt like an afterthought, rather than a central part of the plot.

My biggest disappointment with "The Inheritance Games" was its lackluster protagonist. Avery's character was not particularly well-developed, and I found myself struggling to connect with her on any level. The supporting characters were equally one-dimensional, making it difficult for me to become invested in their stories. Overall, I felt like the book failed to live up to its potential, leaving me feeling disappointed and uninspired.

In contrast to "The Inheritance Games," I recently finished reading "All of Us Villains" by Adam Silvera, which was a completely different experience. This science fiction novella follows a group of high school students who are stuck on a mysterious ship with no memory of how they got there. As they try to survive and figure out their situation, they discover that each of them has a unique talent for murder. I was thoroughly enthralled by the story and characters, which were richly developed and complex.

Another book that caught my attention was "Somebody" by Martha Wells, a science fiction novella about an AI named Murderbot who is struggling to come to terms with its own identity. Despite being marketed as a fun and lighthearted read, I found "Somebody" to be a bit of a disappointment. The character of Murderbot was not particularly interesting or compelling, and the plot was predictable and lacking in tension.

Recent Reads: December Wrap-Up

As we approach the new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on my reading habits from December. It's been a busy month, with plenty of books to keep me entertained. Here are the six books that made it onto my list for December:

1. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2. Somebody by Martha Wells

3. Some (unfortunately I forgot who wrote this book)

4. All of Us Villains by Adam Silvera

All of these books were a mix of fun and disappointment, but that's what makes life interesting, right?

Future Plans: January Wrap-Up

As we dive into the new year, I'm excited to share my plans for the upcoming month. First and foremost, I'll be releasing a wrap-up video featuring some thoughts on December's reading list. I'm also working on some exciting content for January that I think will really get your hearts racing.

For now, it seems like I have one more book left to finish before we can move into new territory. It is a Fantasy novel and so far it has been going pretty well.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello welcome back to my channel today i am going to be doing my december wrap up i'm excited to be sharing this with you because i feel like i read a fair amount of books in december that i haven't talked to you about in videos i mean okay to be fair most of these books i ended up reading for some like chan miss vlogs but they weren't themed vlogs and i don't really expect you to have watched all of chan miss so i thought i could kind of discuss these books in this video and feel like december is finally wrapped up now we can move into january which is gonna be a fun it's gonna be a fun month okay i mean i'm not doing like a january wrap-up today but it's gonna be a long one i can feel it in my bones i've already started reading things for january that i haven't vlogged so all of that being said let's get into the wrap-up first book that i read that was just it was all right like it wasn't the best thing i've ever read but like it was fine the day of the duchess by sarah mclean now i kind of talked about it in my goals video for 2022 but i'm trying to read books that i physically own and for some reason i have a hardcover copy of this book i got it in my head that i needed to own all of the historical romances in the hardcovers because apparently avon does hardcovers and you can get them on amazon if you're curious but why i decided to pick this one up sight on red sight unseen sight on red i didn't i have not read this book previously to buying it and am i regretting that decision like perhaps a little bit so this book is about malcolm and serafina it's historical romance and it is a marriage in trouble second chance romance sort of thing which normally i'm hyped for like i am excited about that idea the execution just never really works for me i've yet to find a book like this that works and this was so similar to a is it martha waters book i'll try to put a picture of that book right here but the same exact plot this was slightly better but not much at the beginning of the book seraphina comes to port i guess you could say not like legal court parliament oh my god parliament that's kind of what she goes to she goes to like the olden day version of parliament and she's like hey uh i'd like a divorce from my husband and her husband is like in parliament he works there he's duke and uh he's not too happy about this so he like takes her into his chamber and they chat about it and they come to this conclusion that if she wants a divorce she is going to have to help malcolm find a new wife so she's going to come to his country estate they're going to get a divorce and she's going to like help him find a wife or whatever and his goal really is to get her back because they've been separated for three years something big happened and like he's regretful like he wants to make amends conceptually i was into it at the beginning because i really liked the attention and the angst that sarah maclean built in the story i was very much rooting for malcolm and serafina and there were moments of goodness throughout the book that i was like clinging to but i feel like the romance was lacking sadly like there are a couple of grand gestures but i don't feel like the romance is built throughout the story right like we have seraphina helping malcolm kind of we have them sort of competing a little bit and like having some playful banter and then they fall in bed together and then he does like one grand gesture and then they stay together i don't know it just didn't feel like a complete romance to me and i didn't feel like he had really truly made amends for the things that he did and in my opinion they were sort of unforgivable things like he treated her so poorly ah yeah i don't know i don't know i don't know how to feel about this one i didn't rate it on goodreads i feel like if i if i had i'd give it like three stars because it wasn't like the worst historical i've ever read but it also wasn't great and one of the decisions that i'm making now that i like have a physical tbr and i am trying to read through it is if i'm going to keep this book or not i'm not keeping this book so it's not one that i'm gonna reread but it wasn't terrible i think if you want a marriage and trouble story like this one was one of the better ones that i've read but i still have yet to find one that i'm like oh my god yes um so yeah moving on another historical because i just have a lot of historicals on my shelf that i'm trying to work through was a julia quinn and i don't know why i purchased this book because i know for a fact i purchased it after reading most of the books in the bridgerton series and just feeling like meh about all of them uh but i picked up when he was wicked which is francesca's story so i've read quite a few of these you know because the bridgetons are like a b c d e f like all of the siblings have like you know alphabetical names so i you know i've read i've read quite a few anyway this story is about michael and francesca michael is the cousin of francesca's dead husband they have to fight their attraction for each other because francesca's like i really loved my husband and i kind of am feeling things for his cousin and i feel bad about that and then he also kind of feels bad about that too um he also kind of felt like for a while he was living in his cousin's shadow a bit and he's kind of having to work through some complicated emotions he has he also feels you know guilty about kind of lusting after his cousin's wife because he did kind of lust after her when he was still alive when his cousin was still alive so complicated feelings complicated emotions and i liked seeing the romance unfold i i don't know i was a little bit torn because i feel like the conflict in this book near the end was a little bit irritating i wanted there to be more of a declaration of love i mean i guess there was but they were also fighting when that happened if you've read any of the other books in the series i think you know what i mean i just feel like the third act conflicts in these books tend to just not ruin the story but it kind of like impacts my enjoyment of them because i'm just wondering why you can't work this out and it kind of affects my ability to see these as true romances if that makes sense like why would you treat someone that you love like that it was kind of like i love you and she was like okay two months later she says i love you i don't know it was kind of bizarre it just it wasn't it didn't 100 work for me but like i enjoyed parts of it and i think the big thing for me was the second epilogue so i listened to this in audiobook format and julia quinn has written second epilogues for pretty much all of the richard books at this point and the second at vlog i think raised this from a two to three star book for me something about that epilogue was just so charming and so delightful it falls into a trope that i don't like i'm just gonna go ahead and share it with you francesca throughout the story uh struggles with infertility and she does end up having children i think this bothers me less in the historical context because we don't know if it was uh francesca that had fertility issues or if it was her first husband you know back in the day like how can you really tell i can kind of excuse it a little bit that that it's like a thing that is cured or whatever near the end of the book but it's not so much that she had a child that was like heartwarming which it kind of was it was the way that she interacts the interaction she had with her mom she was struggling with infertility oh my god it just like it broke me down a little bit i did tear up i did cheer up yeah i don't know the epilogue kind of like made this book better than i think it had any right to be because it just was like not my favorite but it wasn't the worst it wasn't the worst i don't know no i feel like i'm changing my mind as i talk about it but i had a good time reading it i will be getting rid of it though like it's not a book that i feel like i'm going to reread and if i do decide to reread any of the bridges in the series it's going to be on audiobook because the audios are really really good for the series moving on to other books we have window shopping uh by tessa bailey this is like a highly or was i guess a highly anticipated book by me i wanted a delightful ted lasso inspired christmas romcom and this is the first christmas romance that i've actually liked so thank you tessa bailey let's all give a round of applause to miss bailey i gave this book five stars i just don't know like going forward into the future if i'm ever gonna give a tessa bailey book less than five stars because it was so good like this was so good and it just had all of the ingredients i was looking for it had a sort of like redemption story that i feel like is common in like christmas books it also had uh really hot steamy sex and it had a hero that was just like so sweet and cinnamon rolly and didn't want to overstep boundaries and it was delightful i just really enjoyed it seems to be a fairly divisive book i feel like most of my friends enjoyed it but looking at goodreads and my goodreads friends some people hated it so i don't know take that with a grain of salt i think it's a book worth trying if next christmas you're like i want to read a smutty romance for christmas give me a christmas money romances this is gonna it's gonna fit the bill it's gonna fit the bill so would recommend um and i have a really pretty copy of it too that i'm so glad to have on my shelves from hello lovely dogs so i think they have a few extra copies left so if you want to go and get one i'd recommend it if you're wondering what it looks like i think i have it in a thumbnail from chan miss so i know i didn't talk about the plot of this book much but like i think it's better to enjoy it as it comes right like i don't know i don't know moving on moving on welcome to the dark side by gianna darling i guess i could actually talk about these two books in conjunction we have welcome to the dark side in lessons and corruption these i read during chan miss but i don't think i really vlogged about them i read the second and third book in this series a couple of years ago and i never read the first book so this year i was like i'm just gonna read through the entire series so i read the first book and the second book again i'm still working on my third book reread at the moment but these are both age gap stories the third one is two to be frank lessons and corruption is sort of like a student teacher thing he's like 18 he's a biker dude and she's his teacher and then we also have uh an older man younger woman story for the second book age gap if you don't like hgap romances i really don't think that you're going to enjoy these if it's something that you do enjoy in a romance setting romance context i think you would enjoy these if you like dirty talk and motorcycle club romances like that's what these are i just i don't know it's funny because i read that second book a couple of years ago and like gave it five stars absolutely loved it for some reason i just like i don't know why i didn't continue with the series because truly these are i don't want to say some of my favorite romances it feels a little bold to like give that claim since i've not read the entire series yet and like i need to i need to read the series before i like fully claim that but i just enjoyed the out of these books like the dirty talk was fantastic and i do think that janet darling does such a good job at crafting a romance there's a lot of romantic gestures there's a lot of romantic moments her writing i think really lends itself well to romantic development because it's surprisingly flowery for like a motorcycle club romance series i'm impressed i'm impressed i also think i have like kind of a strange not strange attachment but i have such a special place in my heart for books that do something that makes me think in my heart like oh like when i write a romance like i want it to have these elements you know there have been a few books like that that i've read over the past year and this definitely falls into that category if you're curious what the other ones are um it would be like trilina pucci's writing i really connect with her writing and then um some of kate stewart's writing i really really like connect with as well just these angsty angsty stories with like a lot of romantic development like that's the kind of that i would like to write and i don't like intend to publish anything but near the end of this year i would like to finally get to write the story of my heart the story of my dreams so that was more that i needed to share this wrap up but all of that to say i really enjoyed these two books and if you're looking for something like that give them a go they are taboo like agent romances i'm not gonna like sugarcoat that they definitely are that know that going in and maybe like read other reviews but i thought they were great moving on a book that i did not enjoy um the inheritance games this one um it's a y a i don't even know what you'd call this it's not really a fantasy story i guess contemporary why contemporary and it's basically just kind of a ripoff of the westing game i don't know if that was her intention but in my opinion it's just like a less exciting version of the westing game we have our main character avery who has bequeathed this inheritance by this man she's never met and this is upsetting to this like billionaire's family who thought that they were going to inherit some stuff and she's wondering why she got this inheritance and everybody in the family is like well my grandpa was a jokester we need to kind of like uncover this mystery and figure things out and i guess that's kind of what the story is about in my opinion it was just kind of a poorly baked like love triangle sort of situation there's like three or four sons in this family and i think like two of them are kind of like competing for avery's affections and i just don't feel like the like mystery plot was very interesting nor were like the games and the puzzles and stuff that they had to solve throughout it it was very lacking in that given that this book is called the inheritance games i was expecting from like the 20 or 30 mark on for it to be this like elaborate thing and it wasn't and that was disappointing to me i guess maybe i went in expecting too much or expecting something different than this book was going to provide but i just feel like you kind of have that promise in the in the synopsis of the book but it didn't deliver which sucks because i was looking forward to this book but i think maybe something else will work better for me and that better thing is um all of us villains which i'm reading currently so yeah it's providing what i feel like the inheritance game didn't provide which is like magic and also a game that is taking place from the 30 mark on so thank you so much for that book i'm not finished with it so i don't know if it's like gonna be great but i'm enjoying it more than i enjoyed this book so i read also some spread by martha somebody i don't remember her last name and i don't have it in my notes this is a novella it's science fiction novella why the i picked this up i don't know i think maybe because i was so excited after reading project hail mary i was like you know what like let me just go for this it'll be great i'm gonna have a good time everybody loves the series and i thought it was going to be as enjoyable at the very least as uh what's that book series called um the every heart a doorway series i think there's like a name for the series but that series by seanan mcguire i was assuming like this would be as compelling as as that series of novellas and there's something so interesting about the idea of like novellas right like as a concept not just like as a filler between large books and series but like a series of novellas that sounds intriguing and like easy and breezy so i guess that's why i picked this up wow that was a really long way of saying i picked this book up it was fine like it was not my favorite thing ever but i honestly was kind of disappointed by this book it was promised to me as like this ai sort of like robot man person thing um has sentience and like kills people but like feels kind of bad about it and like has a personality and watches soap operas and and i was like you know what cool but my issue was that murderbot as a character was just really not that interesting i was expecting so much more from murderbot's character and murderbot's personality and i feel like if you're going to have this set up like i'm gonna need that character to be interesting enough to carry the whole thing and that just was not the case for me i mean i guess it's a robot so like it doesn't have to have much of a personality but like sort of it does because that's the whole point of the series anyway um that was my biggest gripe and then also i don't feel like the plot was that compelling so it's like why did i read this i don't know those are the six or seven books that i read in december that i have not talked about in a blog i mean i've logged most of these books but you know it's like not a not a i read five or like a a secret tbr video wow that's the word i was looking for but that's all i have for you today i've got some stuff i'm cooking up for january the wrap up for january is hopefully going to be like super exciting and then also i'm hoping the content in january is going to be mildly exciting kind of hinted at it but i'm reading some fantasy currently and it's going pretty well so that's it love you all so much thanks so much for watching and until next sunday youhello welcome back to my channel today i am going to be doing my december wrap up i'm excited to be sharing this with you because i feel like i read a fair amount of books in december that i haven't talked to you about in met and this is upsetting to this like billionaire's family who thought that they were going to inherit some stuff and she's wondering why she got this inheritance and everybody in the family is like well my grandpa was a jokester we need to kind of like uncover this mystery and figure things out and i guess that's kind of what the story is about in my opinion it was just kind of a poorly baked like love triangle sort of situation there's like three or four sons in this family and i think like two of them are kind of like competing for avery's affections and i just don't feel like the like mystery plot was very interesting nor were like the games and the puzzles and stuff that they had to solve throughout it it was very lacking in that given that this book is called the inheritance games i was expecting from like the 20 or 30 mark on for it to be this like elaborate thing and it wasn't and that was disappointing to me i guess maybe i went in expecting too much or expecting something different than this book was going to provide but i just feel like you kind of have that promise in the in the synopsis of the book but it didn't deliver which sucks because i was looking forward to this book but i think maybe something else will work better for me and that better thing is um all of us villains which i'm reading currently so yeah it's providing what i feel like the inheritance game didn't provide which is like magic and also a game that is taking place from the 30 mark on so thank you so much for that book i'm not finished with it so i don't know if it's like gonna be great but i'm enjoying it more than i enjoyed this book so i read also some spread by martha somebody i don't remember her last name and i don't have it in my notes this is a novella it's science fiction novella why the i picked this up i don't know i think maybe because i was so excited after reading project hail mary i was like you know what like let me just go for this it'll be great i'm gonna have a good time everybody loves the series and i thought it was going to be as enjoyable at the very least as uh what's that book series called um the every heart a doorway series i think there's like a name for the series but that series by seanan mcguire i was assuming like this would be as compelling as as that series of novellas and there's something so interesting about the idea of like novellas right like as a concept not just like as a filler between large books and series but like a series of novellas that sounds intriguing and like easy and breezy so i guess that's why i picked this up wow that was a really long way of saying i picked this book up it was fine like it was not my favorite thing ever but i honestly was kind of disappointed by this book it was promised to me as like this ai sort of like robot man person thing um has sentience and like kills people but like feels kind of bad about it and like has a personality and watches soap operas and and i was like you know what cool but my issue was that murderbot as a character was just really not that interesting i was expecting so much more from murderbot's character and murderbot's personality and i feel like if you're going to have this set up like i'm gonna need that character to be interesting enough to carry the whole thing and that just was not the case for me i mean i guess it's a robot so like it doesn't have to have much of a personality but like sort of it does because that's the whole point of the series anyway um that was my biggest gripe and then also i don't feel like the plot was that compelling so it's like why did i read this i don't know those are the six or seven books that i read in december that i have not talked about in a blog i mean i've logged most of these books but you know it's like not a not a i read five or like a a secret tbr video wow that's the word i was looking for but that's all i have for you today i've got some stuff i'm cooking up for january the wrap up for january is hopefully going to be like super exciting and then also i'm hoping the content in january is going to be mildly exciting kind of hinted at it but i'm reading some fantasy currently and it's going pretty well so that's it love you all so much thanks so much for watching and until next sunday you\n"
