Creating a Cozy Reading Nook with Covered Books
We're a family that absolutely loves books. Maybe your family is too. We want books in every single room, but in this space, it's super monochromatic. So, I really wanted to bring books into this space, but not all of those books go with my color scheme. What I've done is taken some of the books and covered them with linen.
To make this project easier, you'll need a few basic supplies: iron, ironing board, spray adhesive, scissors, linen, a drop cloth or plastic to lay down, and your favorite books. Now, I generally try to avoid using the iron, but for this one, you're definitely going to need it and your ironing board. You also need spray adhesive, scissors, linen, and a drop cloth or maybe just some plastic to lay down.
First, let's talk about measuring the book. When we were in school, we used to cover our books in paper bags. Now, all we're going to do is measure it, lay it out flat, and measure again. First, we'll make a flap on the top and bottom, then enough that it can wrap around and fit this way. This may seem like an old-fashioned process, but trust me, it works beautifully.
Once you have your measurements, cut out two pieces of linen to match. Now, lay out one of the pieces of linen flat next to your book. Make sure it's not wrinkled or bunched up, as that will affect how well it covers the book. Next, take one of your books and place it on top of the linen piece.
Next, you'll need to secure the linen in place using spray adhesive. You want to make sure this is applied evenly so the linen doesn't bubble up. Make sure you spray the front and binding as well as the back. When the adhesive is set, take your book off the linen piece and press it firmly onto the cover of the book.
Now that we have our first book covered in linen, let's talk about ironing the flap. When you iron, make sure to iron these flaps all down because they create a really nice crease and will keep the book in place. I like to iron them until they're nice and stiff so that when you put the book on the shelf, it won't come off.
As you can see from this example, not ironing your fabric results in a bunched up and wrinkled mess. You want to make sure all of those wrinkles are out because if they are, your books will look sloppy on the shelf. So be sure to take the time to iron that linen until it's smooth and flat.
Now that we have our book covered in linen, let's talk about adding a little extra security using more spray adhesive underneath the cover. This ensures that the book is stuck firmly onto the cover and won't come off over time. Make sure you press hard enough so that the liner stays in place.
With all of these steps complete, your books should be looking lovely covered in linen. I've got a stack of gorgeous linen covered books now, ready to add to my shelf. In fact, I'm thinking of making a trip downstairs to put them on the shelf right away. But that's not all - we're also going to need a second studio room when you've got four floors and want to catch up on our content. This is because as much as we love books, sometimes we don't have enough space to write about them all in one place. So we'll be moving on to new studios soon so that we can continue to bring you the best book-related content possible.
