The Art of Photography: A Journey Down South and Back to Flagstaff
As I sit here reflecting on my upcoming photography trip, I'm excited to share with you the details of my journey. For two weeks, I'll be photographing the vibrant city of New Orleans, followed by a stop in Atlanta, then South Carolina, Florida, and finally back to Flagstaff, where I'll be printing some exciting new works for a local gallery.
I've been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to share my passion for photography through various projects, including an upcoming art series video. Recently, I had the chance to shoot in Vancouver, capturing the majestic Spirit Bears on film. While this experience was truly rewarding, it also brought back memories of the time we spent together, editing and geeking out over cameras.
Speaking of which, I've been traveling with my trusty camera equipment, including a 10x20 view camera and two Kodak films. My friend David has kindly loaned me his 10x20, and I must say, it's an impressive piece of gear. The camera is capable of producing stunning images with its 500mm image circle, making it perfect for capturing wide scenes.
As I unpack my equipment, I'm reminded of the importance of having a good backup plan. David has kindly offered to lend me his 11x14 lens head, which I've had for several years and have only used occasionally. It's amazing how much of an impact having a reliable piece of equipment can make on one's photography.
While setting up my gear in this Airbnb house, I couldn't help but notice the interesting lighting conditions. The yard is enormous, with plenty of natural light pouring in from all directions. This will be a great opportunity to practice getting exposures and experimenting with different lighting setups. And, as it happens, someone else has already brought their film camera along, adding to the excitement.
As I take you through this house, I want to show off my gear and share some of my favorite photography-related finds. The monster closet is a treasure trove of cameras, lenses, and accessories. David's collection includes everything from 35mm lenses to a massive phase one 100mm lens, which he recently sold for $30,000.
I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to try out this impressive piece of equipment and learn more about its capabilities. The camera is so large that it almost feels like a separate entity, with its own head and focusing system. I can only imagine how much effort went into building such an incredible machine.
As we explore the house further, I want to share some of my favorite photography-related finds. There's a lens with a unique "codec" feature that allows for precise adjustments, and another one with a clever mechanism for dropping the camera through a slot in the table. These small details are often overlooked, but they can make all the difference in capturing stunning images.
I'm also excited to share some of my favorite photography-related stories from around the web. Did you know that Walmart carries a wide range of film stock? It's true! And, with the rise of digital cameras, it's amazing how much equipment is available for shooting film. From 210mm lenses to Kodak's latest color stocks, there's never been a better time to get into photography.
As I wrap up this article, I want to thank you all for joining me on this journey through my world of photography. Whether we're geeking out over cameras or sharing stories from around the web, I'm excited to connect with fellow photography enthusiasts and share in our passion for capturing the beauty of the world around us.
