A Harrowing Experience: When iPhone Charging Cable Caught Fire
I wanted to share with you all something that happened to me recently, which was quite unexpected and had never occurred before. The situation was relatively dangerous, and I hoped by filming this video, I could prevent such incidents from happening to anyone else in the future. This is indeed the first time when charging my iPhone 10s that the actual iPhone cable, the one that came inside of the box, caught on fire.
I also contacted Apple for some details about what happened. Today, I went on a family trip and decided to plug my iPhone into the vehicle's charger to keep it charged throughout the day. The charger in question is a third-party charging accessory designed specifically for charging iPhones in cars. I plugged this into the actual socket of course, and then connected the USB cable to the one that says five volts right there - five amps.
Once I plugged it in, all I did was plug my iPhone in as I normally would. Anybody would know what I'm talking about here. What I noticed was that the iPhone didn't last long on the charge; there wasn't any indication that the accessory was not supported or anything like that. Instead, I saw the battery indicator flashing on and off constantly back and forth as if it was charging, then discontinuing and charging again - multiple times in a row.
I thought maybe it was just the connector which I bought at a gas station. It's not a certified connector for an iPhone; it was one of those cheap ones you can get for ten bucks. As a result, I never buy these types of accessories because I had heard that they can cause damage to devices and be dangerous. However, until today, I hadn't realized how dangerous buying these cheap iPhone accessories for vehicles could be.
I decided to use my iPhone as normal, showing you the picture here, all of a sudden just burst into flames. That was when I quickly dropped the iPhone and disconnected the plug. The flame went away, but the smoke kept going - look at that; it's completely fried now. This is the original cable that came with my iPhone.
What was surprising was that my iPhone didn't give me any warning about this accessory not being supported. Usually, when you plug a cable or use an accessory that isn't compatible, your phone gives you a prompt saying something like 'Accessory not supported.' Well, this wasn't the case here. Thankfully, I was in the vehicle and could catch it in time to disconnect it before any harm could be done.
However, if I had left my iPhone connected for even one second longer, who knows what could have happened? The situation was indeed very scary, especially thinking about my family being in that car with me at that moment. That's why I want to warn all of you out there not to use these types of cheap accessories.
Apple does offer some certified chargers and adapters on their website - check them out below. As for me, Apple will be calling me tomorrow at noon to discuss the whole situation further. In the meantime, I'll be following up with you guys in the description or where we follow-up video. This is basically the message of this video: do not use these types of accessories; what happened to me could happen to anyone else.
