HGTV Handmade Challenge: Karen's 30-Minute Makeover
As the timer starts, Karen felt a surge of nervous energy as she began her 30-minute makeover challenge on a vintage purse. "What can you even do in 30 minutes at home?" she wondered aloud, setting the stage for an exciting and unpredictable transformation.
Karen started by grabbing some black and white buttons that she thought she could sew onto the purse or use as a button decoration right in the middle. She then began to brainstorm ways to add some visual interest to the design, considering using white sequins to create a pattern around the button. After some experimentation with different ideas, Karen decided to try out some wide lace, which she found to be perfect for creating a subtle yet eye-catching effect.
As the timer ticks away, Karen's thoughts turn to the shiny gold dots that Meg had pulled out for her earlier in the challenge. She thinks they might add just the right touch of glamour to the design, and so decides to incorporate them into her plan. With the gold dots added, Karen starts to envision a beautiful half-circle design on the top flap of the purse.
At 20 minutes in, Karen realizes she needs to start gluing down some of the elements she's created so far. She uses a ruler to ensure that the large button is perfectly centered and then applies E6000 glue to secure it in place. With this foundation complete, Karen moves on to the next step: adding more gold dots to create a cohesive design.
As the clock ticks closer to the 30-minute mark, Karen starts to feel a sense of urgency but also a growing excitement for what's to come. She realizes that she needs to make some tough decisions about how to finish off the purse, and so decides to go back to her trusty lace trim. After all, it was one of her original ideas and still looked great.
With just 10 minutes left on the timer, Karen is starting to get a little anxious. She knows that she needs to glue down everything in sight if she's going to complete the challenge within the time limit. The thought sends a shiver down her spine as she begins to frantically apply E6000 glue to all of the elements she's created so far.
As the clock ticks away, Karen is down to just two minutes left on the timer. She takes a deep breath and tries to focus on the task at hand, knowing that one mistake could cost her the challenge. But with her heart pounding in her chest, she presses on, determined to see this through to the end.
And then, suddenly, it's all over. With just 21 seconds left on the timer, Karen steps back and takes a moment to admire her handiwork. She can't believe how much she's accomplished in just 30 minutes – a beautiful, sparkly purse that looks like something straight out of a high-end boutique.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys welcome back to HGTV handmade you might notice a little location change today I'm in New York visiting Meg and we thought we might do a quick little mini collaboration here we see that you guys are digging the challenges so much and that's kind of fun at seeing that maybe we should do more of them so we're doing a really fun challenge today where I found these two cool vintage purses that look very similar so Karen and I are going to go into my craft area with the supplies that we have and in 30 minutes see what he so nervous what can you even do in 30 minutes a home so nervous you can totally change up purse all right uh let's get started let's started 30 minute timer and begin oh my God I'm so nervous so I started out by grabbing these black and white buttons that I thought I could sew onto the purse or at least use one as a button decoration right in the middle and then after that I thought about using these white sequins to make some sort of pattern around the button after that I tried out some lace and I really liked how this wide lace looked on the inside so it just kind of peaked out from under the flap after that Meg pulled out these shiny gold dots for me which I thought might dress up this sequins a little so I played around with those for a few minutes we're at the 2445 Mark oh no all right so at the 20 minute Mark I definitely have to start gluing so I have to make up my mind so at that point I decided to take away the sequins and just use the gold dots to make this nice half circle design on the top flap of the purse so once I put that in place on both sides I was pretty happy with the design so it was time to start gluing I used a ruler to make sure that the large button was perfectly centered and then used E6000 to glue it down and then I used the E6000 to glue down all of the gold dots which was pretty repetitive but it went quickly after the top was finished I experimented with a few different trims but then decided to go back to the lace at this point I was halfway done with the challenge but I think I was doing all right so I used the a6000 to glue down the lace getting it all over my hands in the process because well it's lace so once the lace was attached I thought about adding some sort of wrist strap out of string but I didn't really have thick enough string for that to work then I thought about adding the gold dots along the bottom of the lace but I didn't want to overdo it too much so then I started adding another row of dots under the half Circle up top and decided to fill that in with the dots in a grid pattern so once all of those were in place it was time to start gluing them could I get them all glued down before time ran out we have less than a minute and a half can she glue them all the DIY pressure is on Karen I'm so nervous there is less than a minute remaining I have two more to go 35 34 33 I think I can do it you can do it you can do it done with 23 seconds 21 seconds remaining oh my God she's made a fantastic sparkly Lacy cool awesome purse in 30 freaking minutes so I'm done I literally just finished like a minute ago I managed to do this in 30 minutes um including coming up with the idea it was a lot you guys um so I started with um this really cute button in the middle and then I did this kind of semicircle of gold and then I decided to F fill it in down at the bottom which this side is a little messy so don't just like look at this side it's a lot better um the whole thing is a little messy but like for 30 minutes I hope you can forgive me and a v6000 all over my hands um and then when you open it up you have this really cute little lace and that peeks through the bottom so yeah that's my purse I can't wait to see what Meg does I love what Karen did to her purse it looks awesome she changed a $5 thrift store purse into something really special and custom made so where go that was so fun um so I hope you guys
