The Aston Martin Vantage: A Hand-Built Masterpiece
The Aston Martin Vantage always sounded great, but now that spine-tingling v8 is available in surround sound, admit it, you want one. You're probably not even hearing me right now, stunned by its lines, its proportions, its presence. The new v8 Vantage Roadster is a true masterpiece, and that roadster name is important. Usually, Aston calls their cab relays Volante, which signifies all those gents in the owners club who wear tweed. It's an open-top cruiser for them, but this one's called the roadster because it's supposed to be a full-on sports car just like the coop.
Aston Martin has produced a proper sports car with the Vantage Roadster, and it's well engineered. The dashboard doesn't rattle, there's no scuffle shape, it feels very stiff. You can't feel the chassis flex; it's flat. But the one override in France you get for this Aston feels heavy. It doesn't feel right - nimble, pointy, and dirty. That's what I wanted a sports car to be like, but then again, this is a truly great Aston Martin. The Vantage Roadster is their best convertible ever.
The V8 Vantage Roadster comes with the same 4.3 liter v8 engine as the coop, which produces the same 380 horsepower. It's significant that the figures are so similar, to impress your mates down the pub. Nought to 60 arrives in just 4.9 seconds, and the Beast goes up to a top speed of 175. On paper, there's absolutely no sacrifice in performance at all.
However, despite its impressive specs, it isn't easy to recommend the Vantage Roadster. At £91 thousand pounds, it's not exactly cheap, but more importantly, the Roadster is 16 grand more than my personal favorite Porsche, the superb 911 Carrera S Cabrio. So realistically, it's pointless carrying albanist test, and buying a car should never be about being rational. You're sitting there at home thinking of ways to get £91 grand as quickly as possible, reminding your other half that this just isn't any car.
It's a hand-built masterpiece with an engine you want to stroke, seats you want to see naked in, and dials that although unreadable look like modern art. When you get bored of scaring the local wildlife to death, what you really want to know is what happens when you push the Roadster a little harder? Have Aston produced a proper sports car with this new Vantage Roadster?
The Vantage Roadster is indeed a great sports car, and it's well engineered. The dashboard doesn't rattle, there's no scuffle shape, it feels very stiff. You can't feel the chassis flex; it's flat. The Vantage Roadster is their best convertible ever, and that's not an exaggeration. It's a true masterpiece of engineering and design. The v8 engine produces the same 380 horsepower as the coop, which arrives at nought to 60 in just 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 175. Despite its impressive specs, it still isn't easy to recommend the Vantage Roadster.
