GPD Pocket Unboxing Hands-On Preview

The GPD Pocket is a device that has been sent to us to review. We were unable to change its build number, so we'll have to work with it for now.

Upon first inspection, the device appears to be functional, and we're able to boot it up. The screen is displaying correctly, although it takes around four or five minutes to do so. This was a bit of a letdown, as we were expecting faster performance from this device. However, the touchscreen is working properly, and the pointer is also functioning correctly.

There are a few settings that need to be tweaked in order for the device to function optimally. These include inverting the screen and adjusting the display settings. This may take some time and patience, but it's worth doing in order to get the best performance out of the device.

One area where the GPD Pocket shines is in its build quality. The materials used are top-notch, and the device feels sturdy and well-built. The keyboard keys are also a highlight, with no flex or movement when pressed. This is a major improvement over our previous experience with this model, which had issues with the keyboard.

The device's internals are also impressive, with a copper heat transfer pipe and cooling fans that work effectively to keep things running smoothly. The battery cell is rated for 7,000 milliamp hours, and the hinge is screwed in place. This suggests that the device has been designed with longevity in mind.

However, there are some areas where the GPD Pocket falls short. One of the most significant issues is with the wireless reception. We've found the signal to be extremely weak, even when compared to other devices. It's possible that this could be due to the metal design of the device, which may be blocking the antennas and reducing reception.

Another area for improvement is in the camera department. The GPD Pocket does not have a front-facing webcam, which is a major disappointment. This makes it difficult to use the device for video calls or other applications that require this feature.

Finally, there's an issue with the storage capacity of the device. While we have 128 gigabytes of storage on board, there is no microSD card slot available. This means that users will be limited in their ability to expand their storage options.

Overall, the GPD Pocket is a highly capable device that excels in many areas. However, it also has its share of drawbacks, including weak wireless reception and a lack of a front-facing webcam. The price point may also be a concern for some users, as this device is selling for around $480-$500.

For those who are interested in a super-tiny, ultra-portable Windows 10 laptop, the GPD Pocket may be worth considering. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. With its impressive build quality, excellent keyboard, and powerful internals, this device has a lot going for it. But with weak wireless reception and no microSD card slot, it may not be the best choice for everyone.

Ultimately, the decision to purchase the GPD Pocket will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you're willing to overlook its weaknesses in exchange for a highly capable and portable device, then this might be the perfect option for you.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso I did say that my Atom reviewingdays are completely over however I'mgoing to make an exception here and thisis for the GPD pocket so this is apocket-sized 7-inch Windows 10 laptopit's had a lot of interest a lot ofpeople have been asking me to reviewthis one so I've finally given in andsaid ok yeah we'll check it out eventhough I did say that no more atoms butit will definitely be the last one soit's powered by the Z 8750 it's got 8gigabytes of RAM 128 gigabytes ofstorage wireless AC apparently has afull metal build on it full size USB 3port and a 1080p 7 inch touchscreen onit so you're probably wondering why I amnot showing the original packaging andwhy this is a retake here because whathappens as I exposed the CD key whichthey put right here inside the box forthe world to see now yeah I couldn'tpost of course edit that out but I feelit's just a bit easier for me to do itthis way so I haven't looked at it yet Ijust saw that and thought I'm going tohave to redo the video so here we havethe power supply nice and small are us 2prong of course I'm going to need apower plug adapter for that one and thatis rated to 12 volts 2 amps and then atype C to type-c cable and then here ofcourse we have the little laptop if Ican get it out and an instruction manualhere there's just outlining the specs ofa day you can see so the battery size isseven thousand milliamp hours so theweight of it is 504 grams which isn'ttoo bad at all definitely a lot heavierthan a mobile phone of course alright sothe build of it that looks a lot betterthan the GPD one that I looked at andunboxed so all-metal the top here feelsquite solid in hand on the front this isa little Ridge there to open it up andon the right-hand side we havethe ports here so that's apparently thisis an exit vent here for a little fanthat's in there just like the wind thatwas also fan cool but it was kind ofjust blowing hot air around there shouldbe an intake okay there we go on thebottom four rubber feet and type C portmicro HDMI and then we have a coarse 3.5millimeter headphone jack withmicrophone support by the looks of thatlogo and then a full-sized USB 3 port Iwhat you can see later on in this videoif it will power an external hard drivealong the back here nothing this partlooks to be plastic for the antennareception I would say or perhaps as thedesign choice there and no ports on theleft hand side so it is missing for meone crucial port or slot you could sayand it's a micro SD card slot would havebeen very handy on this I mean I knowyou do have a hundred and twenty eightgigabytes of storage even so I wouldhave really liked to have had that butso far yeah very portable just have alook now and see how thick it is comesin at eighteen point four onemillimeters that's without the rubberfeet there this is the thickest partreally and with the rubber feet 20millimeters so 20.6 there that isn't badat all so time to open it up and have alook at the inside here so the hinge onthat that's quite stiff but not bad Ilike to have more of a affirm feelinghinge last thing you want us to be allloose and floppy so the maximum anglewill recline well is actually a lotbetter than those thought goes almostall the way back you can see there andif you have a look at that keyboard thatactually feels quite good very firm sothe build quality so far is impressingme it's a lot better than that windmodel so we've got a touch point there Ithink that's what you call them isn't itlike the IBM's the Lenovo ThinkPadseries so this acts as like the mousepointer so using pressure there I'llhave to test it out when I power it onof course then your left and right mousebuttons there I can see a logo here forthe microphone but can't see any reallyinput for it'll hole it must be justbelow perhaps one of these keys herewhich is a little bit awkwardso there's may compromise as you can seehere with the keyboard to layout atleast this stillfull-sized arrow keys which is going tohelp of people on a 19-2 game honoredwhatever but there are some keys alonghere the caps lock is very small shiftkey quite small as well but with thisspace and real estate they've done apretty good job here actually and westill got shortcuts for the audiocontrols they're print screen which Iwould like to have and yeah typing onthis of course isn't going to be so goodcompared to a full-size laptop keyboardshave really had to shrink things downanyway let's power it up and have a lookand see how long it takes to boot up andthat screen looks to be fully laminatedyeah I think it's safe to say that isfully laminated the screen which isgreat okay so it did take some time toget to this menu I've got to go throughthe Windows 10 setup so you can see thea languages we've got here we've gotEnglish Spanish French Chinese and thatlooks to be about it well Korean too andthe touch screen working so far allrightlet's run through that set up and we'llhave a look at the device manager freeavailable spaceokay so setup was a little bit slow asit can be that window set up decided toalso download some update so it had toreboot two or three times or somethingand yet was pretty slow there being anatom it's not exactly as fast as theApolo legs either or the core ends soI've just put a couple of files on hereto test out a few things we wanted toshow you first the screen which looksreally really good now fully laminated1080p super sharp and this is 100percent brightness at the moment whichlooks very good not bad at all and herewe go down to zero percent brightnesswhich to me looks bit to them sorry toobright it should be dimmer really fornighttime use I find that that's goingto be about too bright and it's 25percent 50 75 then 100 there now you'llnotice that down in the taskbar mywireless AC range is quite poor there soI feel that this is going to probably bethe biggest con this is just my firstimpressions here but it looks likebecause it's a full metal bodya very small device the wirelessreception the range is just not reallythat good so far that's going to be mybiggest complaint just looking at it sohere I have the device manager justwanted to show you quickly that theinternal storage is a Samsung this isthe DJ in b4rhave a look on the internet if you wantto find out more information on that andthe wireless is Broadcom wireless AC soit's good to see why less AC on an adamdevice especially at this price rangeit's got to be wireless AC I feel so wecan at least maximize on those speedsthere but again yeah that range is goingto be a little bit concern than just howwell is going to be perform I'll tip itout my full review so the process ofcourse is for threads that the z80 750and nothing else really of interested toshow you so I am benchmarking that driveand it's just finishing up now so yeah Ican see from that that it's e MMC 4.5spec but those speeds dicen those readsare quite good and the Samsung isnormally are so it's not one of thosecheaper bwin drives which can sometimescause a few issues so the memory we'vegot 8 gigabytes of RAM but I've noticeda con and both a a pro here first I'llstart with a pro that it's two slotsthere so that means it's going to bedual channel that will help theintegrated graphics however the speedfaster supported speed is 1600 megahertzthis is 1066 now normally with thesedevices on the addams you could go ontothe bias and set higher speeds there sohopefully I'm able to tweak it up to thenext level and will get slightlyimproved performance there but maybethey've toned it down for a reason forbattery life for heat or something likethat and windows have a look and seethat it seems to be fully activated andthis is the latest image they are usingso the vent on the right side I can feela little bit of air coming out of thisso it's definitely doing its job butwhether or not that's going to stop itfrom thermal throttling I have to checkout later I need to do a lot morein-depth tests gaming and things likethat just to seewhat's going to happen there but betterheat coming out and I can feel a littlebit of heat on the underside - that'stransmitting through the red base nowthese ports here I have tested this thisis a proper type C port so it'ssupporting both charging data and thegood thing here display out so thatmeans it can be used as a docking portand with one of these type C hubs thisis one I've got here from heaven and itworks well1080p maximum resolution that's all thatyou can get out of the the cheery trailsthere so they're not supporting higherresolutions up to 4k like you get withthe Apollo Lake so it's a little bit ofa shame they didn't use that CPU in thisparticular model and just to confirmthat the USB 3 port yes will indeedpower a one terabyte external hard drivekeyboard is going to take some time toget used to typing on right now I justdid a typing test before and I noticedthe biggest problem for me is the spacebar I've been tapping the track pointerby mistake and it just seems quiteawkwardit's very cramped so I would not bewanting to type out a massive novel onthis thing that's definitely not goingto work you're going to end up probablythrowing this out a window if you dothat but of course they've madecompromises understandably with thiskind of size and also the the trackpointer is a little fidgety at time nowyou get used to it I'm going to need abit of practice and I found that alsotrying to click the left and right mousebuttons that sometimes I would end upclicking those two space bars there sothe keyboards cramps we don't have atouchpad on here but we have atouchscreen of course however I foundthat it's a little tricky to use becauseof the size here now I can increase theWindows 10 scaling to help but at themoment with the default scaling where1080p at 7 inches remember that is verysmall it is a little difficult sometimesto get things to minimize or maximizeand overall it's just not as accurateyou're going to have to have two orthree attempts at times to click thingsso there are speakers located just downhere there is a little grill inside hereand the sound transmitted upwards whichis good I mean you're not going to beblocking it if you haveto use it on your lap or anything solet's have a listen to how thosespeakers sound all right so they're atthe tiny attentive base it's almostnon-existent but there's a little bitthere meds okay a little bit of treblethey're not wonderful sounding speakershowever I will give them this that thesespeakers sound a lot better than some ofthe tablets I have reviewed that haveterrible speakers it's good to see thereare a little bit louder now it comes outto be about 83 decibels now ideally Ilike to see around 90 but I find thatfor such a small device the speakers aresufficient so it some bad news here whenit comes to increasing the RAM speedshere the advanced setting menu and thebias is completely locked out to us sowe're not able to change that right nowI've got Linux Manjaro build number 17plugged in right here let's have a lookand see if at least I can boot this fromthe boot menu here in the BIOS and yetit looks like it's going to work howeverthe screen is still not displaying thecorrect way up hopefully that willchange so it took a long time to boot upI'm talking about four or five minutesand this is as far as I've got here thetouchscreen is working the pointer alsoworks so that's good news and it lookslike there's going to be a few littlesettings and things that need to betweaked so you're going to have toinvert the screen around and mess aboutwith all of that but it runs it which isthe main thing here there's a quick sizecomparison so yes it will fit in atleast my large pockets that I havebecause I'm used to carrying around asix point four inch mobile which is myxiaomi mean max here you can see the GPDpocket isn't really that much bigger ofcourse it's a lot thicker and means it'squite bulky but yeah it is possible toput this in a large jacket pocket orlarge pants have large pockets now lookat the internals very well done here Ido like this and this is quite funny tome actuallyto see this on here a copper heattransfer pipe and the cooling fans onsuch a small little device here it looksgood they've done a really good job I'mvery pleased with the build quality theinternals here you can see the batterycell there which is seven thousandmilliamp hours and the hinge screwed inand the dual antennas which go along thebottom here and seem to connect just tothis part here so that is probablyexplaining why the wireless reception onthis does not seem to be very good atall at least my initial firstimpressions of it are so the GPT pocketclearly isn't a device for everyone it'sa very niche market here tapping intosomething ultra portable that peoplewant a Windows 10 laptop that they cantake anywhere so the design of it is amassive step up from there when the whenI had issues with mine and I threw mychallenge on the review because thekeyboard just stopped working I justgave up on that and for that's enoughand I posted that one back to China toget my refund I didn't like that at allbecause that can happen to any device ofcourse that you can get lemons out ofChina but so far this unit is reallygood so the positives build quality isexcellent the materials used they travelon the keyboard keys is great no flexit's got a little fan in there and verygood internals the screen fullylaminated nice and bright super sharphowever being seven inches I find thatsometimes it is a little hard to use itbecause it's just so tiny it's going totake a lot of adapting to get used totyping on this keyboard and using thepointer as well I will probably try anduse touch when I can and then thepointer for the more finer controlsthere at least we do have that option inthere design wise we've made a couple ofchoices I don't really understand thebiggest being why is there no frontfacing webcam on this I feel for yourvideo calls like Skype good want awebcam on this and it's a realdisappointment it doesn't have it so mepersonally it could also do with a microSD card slot but we've got 128 gigabytesof storage on us but my biggest area ofconcern so far has to be the wirelessperformthe range of it I've noticed to bepretty much terrible it's not that goodat all it's struggling other laptops anddevices I have would have at the momentfull strength this is only getting onebar and I do believe because it's allthat metal design and the fact that theantennas when the lid is up like thatare being blocked because it's righthere and having the medal in therethat's reducing the reception the signalstrength is dropping and I need to testthat out more but really not too happywith that so overall is this a devicefor you well it depends maybe or someonethat wants a super tiny the world'ssmallest Windows 10 laptop this is foryou the price as well is another big conI mean this is expensive this is sellingfor about 480 to 500 u.s. that's a lotof money I feel for a dated atom chipseteven though you do have eight gigabytesof RAM it's got the type C on therethanks a lot for watching this previewhere and I do hope to catch you back inthe channel soon with the full review ofthis model\n"
