iOS 17.4 - BEFORE You Update!

iOS 17.4 Release Date and What You Need to Know Before Updating

Apple will soon be releasing iOS 17.4 worldwide, allowing everyone to update to this next update on their iPhones. However, before you decide to update, there are a few things you should know about.

Release Date

----------

We're approximately 3 to 4 days away from the official release of iOS 17.4 today is March 1st, and I expect this update to be released on the week of the 4th, perhaps Monday the 4th. Before you update, keep in mind that this information may change at any moment.

Updating iOS 17.4: Avoid Using Your Sales Service

When you go to download iOS 17.4, avoid updating using your sales service. If you see the update on your iPhone, make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi. This will ensure a smoother and faster download process. I've had issues with the beta updates using the cell service on my device, so Wi-Fi is definitely the best option.

The New Clock Widget: City Digital

I love the new clock widget that comes with iOS 17.4, it's called the City Digital widget. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, the time sometimes doesn't show the proper time for whatever reason, and when you go to edit the time or city, not every city is available. For example, my city of Tampa, Florida is not available as you can see right there. I'm not sure why that is, but it's something to keep in mind if you decide to use this new clock widget.

Side Loading Coming to iOS 17.4

Something else I wanted to talk about is side loading. Side loading allows you to install apps from third-party marketplaces or third-party app stores, just like on a Mac or an Android device. However, there's a bit of confusion surrounding this feature. If you don't live in the EU, you will not get side loading on your iPhone with iOS 17.4. This is because side loading is only available in the EU region for now. For those who may not know what side loading is, it basically allows you to install apps from outside the App Store.

New Default Browser Option

For the EU and EU-only users, there's a new option to select a different default browser when opening links or extensions that typically open within Safari. This means you'll be able to choose any browser of your choice, but keep in mind that this feature is only available for the EU region at the moment. It's not clear if this will be coming later for other countries.

Current Issues with Apple Pay

The last thing I want to talk about and make you guys aware of are current issues being reported with regards to Apple Pay. If you have a business that relies on Apple Pay, there's an increasing number of reports mentioning that Apple Pay is having issues, especially within the EU region. We've seen various posts over on Reddit, and it appears that there are issues with Apple Pay not everyone. Although this doesn't seem like a widespread issue, we need to wait for official confirmation from Apple to see if this is actually a major issue.

Conclusion

In conclusion, before you update to iOS 17.4, keep in mind the release date, avoid using your sales service when downloading, and be aware of the new clock widget's limitations. Also, side loading is only available in the EU region for now, and there's a new default browser option for EU users. If you run a business that relies on Apple Pay, it's best to hold off until we get an official confirmation from Apple that this is not a widespread issue. The update should be available worldwide within the next 3 to four days or so, so keep an eye out for it on the week of the 4th of March or the 5th of March.
