DIY Wood Tabletop Planter _ DIY Wood Projects

Welcome to HGTV Handmade Today: Creating a Wood Tabletop Planter

Hey everyone, it's Melanie Ham welcome back to HGTV handmade today I am going to teach you how I made a wood tabletop planter pretty excited about this project I only spent four bucks because I already had a lot of the other materials on hand wood glue and stain or paint or things that you often have already in your DIY supplies so pretty excited about this I went to my local hardware store and I bought a 1 by 6 board of wood now you can ask them to cut it for you which I do recommend doing if you don't have a way to cut it at home or a friend or family member or somebody that can help you do that if you don't know how so while you're at your hardware store ask them to cut three boards 18 in of course you can adjust these are the measurements that I use for mine so if you want yours larger or smaller you can make these adjustments this board was 6 ft long so you can follow my measurements and just buy one board which is pretty cool cuz it was $3.72 for one board you need three boards that are 18 in long and then you need two boards that are 7 in I wanted my end pieces to have that little lip on the top just to create a little bit more of a dynamic look if you want it to be flush all the way around you can make them 6 in so now what you want to do is place your first board down on a surface make sure it's protected then you want to put a spot of wood glue make sure that you're following all the manufacturer instructions on whatever brand of wood glue that you have so when you have that laying down flat you're going to put a bead of glue on the long sides and then stand up the other two boards on the edges and like so you can see here in the video and glue these down you can just leave it here the wood glue does a good job of kind of bonding it really quickly and then let this dry for a little bit before you add the end pieces once those have had once it's had about a half hour to dry it doesn't need to fully dry just just enough so that when you attach the end pieces nothing slips sliding around then you want to use a bead of glue and attach your end pieces with the wood glue once your wood glue is dry we are going to nail it together just to add a little extra security make sure that your nails are long enough to go all the way through those boards and into the next piece of wood so that it's nice and secure careful when you're hammering and I've shown you right here the good places is to put your nails just to uh make sure that this is nice and secure so that we're securing it not only with the wood glue but also with some Nails once that is done you are ready to paint it stain it whatever you want to do and the wood glue if you got any excess around you can sand that and stain or paint that as well so this is up to you really the options are endless make sure though that whatever you pick you are using the instructions written on whatever ever you pick in order to make sure that you have the best result possible I am going to use some stain that I have used on other DIY projects and I really like the way that it looks so uh I'm going to use that kind of stain for mine
