Street Speed 717: A Duramax Update with Mods
Welcome to Street Speed 717, where today it's cold outside, but we're going to talk about some mods that I've recently done to my Duramax. As you can see behind me, this is my Duramax update parking lot and also the place where Prius owners like to call the cops on me. Let's start with the obvious, which is fender flares. I've taken them off, and that's because one of them has recently sustained some damage.
My front left Fender Flare, my front right driver-side fender flare, and as you can see, they're pretty beat up normally. This would sit like this on the truck now. I'm not exactly sure when this happened, but I do think I know how it happened. I must have hit a bump while I was off-roading recently, and the tire bounced back and hit these plastic OEM Fender Flare. So, they don't surprise me that it broke so easily. And of course, when you're running massive tires where the clearance is already limited, there's not a whole lot of room for the tire to bounce back when you're doing things like going over big bumps.
I will have to get a new Fender Flare, luckily they are not too expensive. For an unpainted one, it's like $50. I probably will get a painted one just so that it matches the rest of them when the wrap eventually comes off. So, it's like $150. Not the end of the world but still sucks that I'm out $150. But why did I take all of them off even if they're in good condition? Well, let me tell you.
I've been thinking about this for a while now, and to be honest with you, I just wanted to update my truck. I wanted it to look modern and sleek, but at the same time, still keep that classic Duramax feel. So, I decided to take off all the old fender flares and replace them with new ones.
However, before I started this project, I realized that I needed a more modern setup for my truck's audio system. Whenever I tried to listen to the radio or charge my phone at the same time, all I got was static through the radio, and I couldn't even charge my phone properly. That made me say okay, I need to get a better system.
So, I went with this Pioneer system that has a touchscreen, Bluetooth, and all that good stuff. It's modern and sleek, just like I wanted for my truck. But, as you can see behind me now, it didn't quite fit in seamlessly with the rest of the truck.
The problem was that the old fender flares were attached to the truck using a combination of screws and clips. When I took them off, they left some marks on the truck's body. And when I tried to put the new Fender Flare back, it didn't fit quite right because of those marks. So, I had to fix that issue.
Luckily, the damage wasn't too severe. The old Fender Flares were just scratched up a bit, and the wrap was a little damaged. But, overall, it's still in great condition. And, as I said before, replacing one new fender flare is like $250, so it's a relatively cheap fix.
But what happened to my truck, you might ask? Well, let me tell you about that story too. When I was driving through the water, there were trees growing along the bank, and one of the exposed roots just hit my truck and scraped along as I drove by. And when I noticed a massive chunk of tree stuck in my tire the other day, it made me realize what happened.
I have to admit, that was quite a close call for my truck. But, thankfully, it's still in great condition, and we're able to fix any damage that might be there. So, this update is going well so far.
Overall, I'm really happy with how things are turning out. The new Fender Flares look great, the Pioneer system is modern and sleek, and my truck is still in great shape despite that close call.
