Divisive Polarizing Love It or Hate It: The 2024 BMW X2 is Here to Make a Statement
The design direction for current BMW products can be described as polarizing, and the newly reworked BMW X2 is no exception. With two versions set to land in the US market, we're excited to take a closer look at what this all-new model has to offer.
The X2's sister car, the X1, retains a scaled-down SUV-like look, while the X2 leans into the SUV Coupe styling that's prevalent throughout the BMW lineup. This blend of sharp angles and puffed-out fenders against a curved roof line makes sense when considering BMW's description of the X2 as a "sports activity coupe." With its sleek design, it's no wonder this model is generating quite a bit of buzz.
In terms of dimensions, the X2 sits 7.6 inches longer than its sister car, while the wheelbase has been stretched nearly an inch and the width has grown just under an inch. Meanwhile, the height has increased by 2.5 inches – all in all, a significant increase that will likely provide more room for passengers and cargo.
BMW's design goals for the X2 centered around creating a "very vertical face" that flows seamlessly into a coupe-like body. While this goal is certainly met, it's worth noting that the model might be slightly deceptive due to its size. It can be fitted with 21-inch wheels, making it the first compact BMW ever to feature such large rims. The standard design elements include big, bold kidneys in the grill and quad headlights – options for illuminated kidneys are available for a bit extra.
One notable feature of the X2 is its increased passenger and cargo space ahead of the driver. A curved display integrates vehicle information on the left side of the dashboard, while infotainment handling occurs on the right. Standard-grade seats come with vinyl upholstery, but Alcantara trim bits are available as an option – these are standard on the m35i model. An M Sport package is also offered for those looking to upgrade their driving experience.
Subscribing to the BMW digital premium system allows users to download music videos and games to play in their car using the air console platform. Smartphones serve as wireless controllers, but users must be stopped before they can access this feature – it's still unclear whether games will be a hit with drivers or if the system will prove enjoyable.
The X2 is available in two flavors for the US market: the X Drive 28i and the m35i ex Drive. The former employs a turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine, delivering 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque – that torque is available all the way down to 1,500 RPMs. In contrast, the m35i features the same engine but with M upgrades like a stronger crank, revised cooling channels, and optimized oil delivery. This enables the model to easily handle 312 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Both engines send power to all four wheels and utilize a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox – paddles on the steering wheel are standard on the m35i, while they're an option for those opting for the X Drive 28i. The Adaptive M suspension system aims to provide different personalities depending on Comfort settings versus Sport settings – it also includes a sport steering setup that enhances feedback through the rack.
The mSport package adds larger brakes and some exterior design flourishes to the mix – these are standard on the m35i model. Interestingly, there's another model of the X2 slated for release in the US market – it's an electric version dubbed the I2. It seems like that gaming system could be put to better use within the cabin while the vehicle is charging.
The 2024 BMW xDrive 28i starts at $42,988, and the m35i ex Drive begins at $52,900. Customers can expect these models to arrive on dealership lots in March of 2024 – it won't be long before they're seen on the roads as well. However, there is already an X2 on the trails competing in the Rebel rally, which features The Talented Rebel team consisting of Rebecca Don and Sedona blin getting ready for rally duty. The X2 has been outfitted with BMW Fitted Falcon Wild Peaks and rotaform wheels – additional light pods have been added front and rear, along with custom skid plates and a spare tire carrier. Most notably, the vehicle sports a customized Tulie roof platform.
