The Fastest Phone of 2017 (Surprising Results)

Testing the Best Phones of 2017: A Scientific Approach

For this series, I've decided to put each device on the same WiFi network, loaded the same apps and games, closed all open apps, and then opened each app and game one at a time to align them up so we can see which one opens faster, slower, by how much, etc. So, I chose the phones based on just usage that I've had in other tests that I've done with them, and I chose the fastest phones that I thought would be winners in this test.

The Devices Used

From left to right, we have the Essential Phone, the iPhone X, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, the Note 8, the OnePlus 5T, and the Pixel 2 XL. These are all super fast phones, so none of them are slouches. I wanted to see if putting all of these phones that I think are the fastest together would actually win out over all of them.

The Test Results

So, first up, let's try to open Twitter. The results are as follows: OnePlus 5T, Pixel 2 XL, and so on, with the iPhone X being last, weirdly enough. Let's try Facebook. The Pixel 2 XL is first, followed by the Essential Phone, the OnePlus 5T, the Note 8, the iPhone X, and the Huawei.

Then let's do YouTube. The results are similar: 5T again, Huawei this time, Pixel 2 XL, and so on. Now, let's try Google Maps. The Pixel 2 XL is first, followed by the Essential Phone, the OnePlus 5T, and the iPhone X was last again.

Next up is Pokémon Go. The results are quite interesting: the iPhone is easily first, then the OnePlus 5T, the Note 8, the Essential Phone, the Huawei, and to my surprise, the Pixel 2 XL is last.

Now let's do Super Mario Run. The Huawei seems to be having a hard time with this already, but surprisingly, the Note 8 is first, followed by the iPhone X, then the Pixel, the OnePlus 5T, the Huawei, and the Essential Phone are struggling, while the Huawei just beats the Essential Phone.

Next up is Sonic Dash. The results are as follows: iPhone first, followed by the Note 8, the Essential, OnePlus 5T, the Huawei, and the Pixel.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- So I'm doing a serieshere on the channel to testthe best phones of 2017in scientific, OK not that scientific, the sort of, sort of scientific tests. And so the first onewe're gonna do is speed. For this experiment I put each deviceon the same WiFi network, loaded the same apps andgames that we're going to useto kind of represent real world scenario, and also closed all of their open apps, and then opened each appand game one at a timeand then aligned all of them upso we could see which one opened itfaster, slower, by how much, etc.So I chose the phones based on just usagethat I've had in other teststhat I've done with them, and I chose the fastestphones that I thoughtwould be winners in this, right? So that means that alreadyall of these phonesare super fast so likenone of them are slouchesbut I wanted to see ifI put all of the phonesthat I think are the fastest togetherwhich one would actually win over all.So, from left to right wehave the Essential Phone, the iPhone X, the HuaweiMate 10 Pro, the Note 8,the OnePlus 5T, and the Pixel 2 XL.And here we go. ( light, jazzy music)So first up, let's try to open Twitter.Ooh, 5T, Pixel 2 XL, and so on and so onwith the iPhone X being last, weird.Let's try Facebook.Pixel 2 XL first,Essential next, OnePlus 5T,Note 8, iPhone X, and the Huawei.YouTube.5T again, Huawei this time,Pixel 2 XL, and so on and so on.OK, then let's do Google Maps.Pixel 2 XL is first, followed by the Essential, the OnePlus 5T,and the iPhone was last again. Now let's try Pokemon Go.iPhone is easily first. Then the OnePlus 5T, theNote 8, the Essential, the Huawei, and to my surprise, the Pixel 2 XL is last.Next let's do Super Mario Run.Huawei seems to be having ahard time with this already. And the Note 8 is first, followed by the iPhone X,then the Pixel, the OnePlus 5T,the Huawei and theEssential are struggling andthe Huawei just beats the Essential Phone. And now let's do Sonic Dash.iPhone is first, followed by the Note 8,the Essential, OnePlus 5T,the Huawei, and the Pixel. And now for anyone who's curious, even though I don'tknow it's that relevantto the rest of this test,I figured I'd just throw it in here, here are benchmarks.First we have Geekbench, and then we have3DMark Sling Shot Extreme. So I was surprised, theresults were kind ofall over the place, but to figure outkind of a winner, what I did was,I took all of their places,so first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and gave them a point for each of those. So first place got 1, second place got 2,third place got 3, etc. etc. and thenthe person with the lowest scoreactually ended up winning,if that makes sense. Now if you do that, theOnePlus 5T has 18 points. So it would be first, whichI'm not that surprised byconsidering it's stockAndroid that's simply beenoptimized by OnePluswith a very minimal UI.Um, but then by a hair it's the Note 8,which I was surprised by, considering thatSamsung's UI on top historically kind ofmakes me feel like the phone is slower. And then say the Pixelis next with 22 pointscompared to the Note 8's 21.So very close.Followed by the iPhone Xand Essential Phoneboth getting 27 points, and the Mate 10 Pro ending it out with 31.Now again this isn't themost scientific test, and honestly like my point system, maybe I could have like put each, like, the time that it took so you could seejust a little bit likehow, like how much closerthese guys really are to each other,'cause the points don't really, like if you were 6th and1st, like it was onlyoff by like a second, thatdoesn't really show you speed.Anyway, there you go.I found that super interestingand a little surprising.I actually was supersurprised by the Note 8and the Essential Phone.I figured it'd be likethe 5T, the Essential, and the Pixel and the iPhonekind of just at the top constantly, and then all the other ones below it.But, you know, just becauselike stock Android I assumedwould be faster, and it feels likefor the most part it is, and it was,and this doesn't take intoaccount other things likegoing through the UI andjust swiping and other thingsI'm only opening apps, butyeah, that wasn't the case.So yeah, I thought that was interesting.Hope you guys enjoyed it though. If you did, pleasethumbs up it or share it.It's greatly appreciated.Um, also, don't forget to check outthe rest of my channel,if you're able to there, please, subscribe. As always though, thanks for watching.(techno music)\n"
