2020 Tesla Model Y Performance FULL REVIEW _ What Have They Done

A Head-Up Display: A Familiar Concept

There's nothing new in that sense looking out the front despite this being a slightly bigger car we don't get the Model X sweeping glass roof which is incredible but what we do get is this giant glass roof going all the way back to the trunk it looks incredible it's the biggest piece of glass I've seen on a roof in a car we've been in cars five times the price and they still have to go for the double small Sun roofs so this is a huge selling point of the Y.

Beyond the Roof: A Big Step Up

Beyond that we still got the stupid piano black option which is the only option owners are going to wrap that it gets very fingerprint e and this steering wheel even though it feels great to the touch is still even on a performance model it's not exciting and I know Tesla can do better because the Model X I was just sitting in has a more exciting steering wheel.

Comfortable Back Seats

Let's go look at the back seats because that's an important part of why you'd get model Y. That's why this owner has changed from his model 3 to a y okay no Falcon doors that woulda been a cool thing to inherit from the Model X it's very comfortable in here I have plenty of space plenty of headroom I'm 5 foot 10 and there's still a couple of inches here it's not Model X big and remember this is the five seat configuration the seven seat will be coming in 2021 but it's going to be three thousand US dollars and looking back there isn't that much room for two extra seats so I'm thinking really small kids or puppies.

Upgrades Over the Model 3

But the model Y does get some cool stuff over the model three for instance we have wireless charging as standard and we have USB seaports in the back here as we do in the front and from our research we found that they do support power delivery. But my favorite thing about riding in the back of the Y is thanks to this button if you can do smoother than that this has reclining back seats which means I get to stare at the glass and feel more comfortable but again only in the five seater configuration so not only is it comfortable and spacious with a few recline II tricks.

A Future in Self-Driving

Sooner than that it can go pick up your kids from school or leave the garage and pick you up and if all of that's a bit too creepy a bit too futuristic for you then just as a car and I speak to a lot of tester owners about this it is like it's not thrilling it's not exhilarating the way a sports car is. I'd still have the Miata for the weekends but it makes you giggle and add a spotlight you know you can embarrass so many cars and that is worth a lot for me because the car is so competent even in long-range form and not performance mode I would probably save the money and just have a really competent all-wheel drive electric car and I'd keep the cost down but if you want to spring for that performance and you want head back driving all the time it's there.

A Noteworthy Design Shift

Even non tense moments have pulled over to be like oh is that the new model Y to me this kind of looks a bit like an X I wouldn't have I don't think I'd notice it on first glance but they've I think Tesla has achieved its goal of having that Tesla Model 3 slightly raised above the road a bit more space I don't think the 72 would be the configuration I'd go for in fact even the owner of this says that he still takes his model X out if he wants to go on a family road trip but as a higher off the ground Tesla Model 3 it succeeds and it's hard the transition to evey is difficult but look at other car enthusiasts our buddy Jason camisa drives an e golf as his daily it's because they're so easy and they fit into your life so well but this comes at a price still I know it's not Model X pricing but 464 gram for the performance it's up there.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enyou're watching throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm stuck in Canada because of the corona virus pandemic and James is in California with the actual car and I've left him in charge but the issue is is that I do all the camerawork and I have all the cameras god help us all well I don't need Thomas because I've hired a camera operator so I can bring you a very early review of the new Tesla Model Y in 4k Technicolor Dreamcoat I don't know film stuff but the Tesla Model Y is a very cool car and Thomas is going to tell you why I'm sorry so even though on throttle house we love our screaming supercars and thirsty muscle cars we also think EVs are pretty cool we love the model 3 when we tested it and the Model X is pretty special too but the model Y slots itself nicely in between its seats seven adults if you opt for the extra third row and it has two digitally controlled electric motors in the front and rear and enough batteries to get YouTube Tesla claims 316 miles of range or 507 kilometers but the real question is how does it drive and how does it fit in with the rest of the Tesla lineup you're new to throttle house we do car reviews tried tested and quite a lot of messages out so subscribe hit the belt and that's 316 mile range that Thomas just mentioned is a little bit compromised in this because this is the model why performance which we've done top of the storage advantages over the three its bloody fast three point five seconds to 60 miles an hour and four point eight if you go for the normal long range back for the rest of the world that's three point seven seconds to a hundred kilometers an hour the moment you mash on the throttle it flies from standstill because it's all wheel drive and also even at 30 miles an hour straight back that's the performance edge and this has the performance upgrade yes that's right the performance model has another option for the performance upgrade which you can tick the model 3 has it too among other sporty things it increases the top speed and reduces the range no extra cost though so since I've been stuck at home and I've had nothing to do I've been binge-watching engineering explained so I made this really accurate graph we have really expensive on the x-axis and we have really fast on the y-axis so the model ax is somewhere over here and the model 3 is somewhere over here and you think of the model Y would fit and directly in the middle but it doesn't because it's only a couple thousand dollars more than the model 3 and the Model X is like a hundred and five thousand dollars u.s. so the model wide somewhere about there and yes the model wide performance is the slowest performance model of the test of the lineup but 3.5 seconds is hardly slow in fact that's quicker than a Mac on turbo quicker than a GL c63 s an X 3m competition in fact it's the same naught to 60 with traction as a dodge challenger hellcat red eye after 60 miles an hour okay the red I might have it and there's no whales of a supercharger in this no war of a v8 instead we get the thrum of two electric motors it's kind of like that TIE fighter sound you put your foot down and it screams its way to 60 miles an hour coronavirus aside is so nice to be in these beautiful Canyon Road I'm sure Thomas is keeping himself busy up north no no no no no no do you heard the sister find but the reason this puts down is power so well and so confidently is because those two electric motors deliver talk to all four wheels effortless powertrain and an easy one to manage as well with the throttle and that's because it shares about three-quarters of its parts with the Model 3 so even though it doesn't get the cool gull wing doors of the Model X it gets more crossover restyling you see the main issue Thomas and I have with crossovers and this is true for the GL c63 s even for the Lamborghini Eris is it can never feel like a Huracan because of that high center of gravity no matter how sporty no matter how tight the suspension is this goes some of the way to fixing out because the center of gravity is so low because of the batteries so if I take a corner at speed it's pretty rooted it's not quite the model three but it's better than the Model X like the confidence that I'm seeing through these corners if anyone else is in this car right now they'd probably be a bit scared but I'm not because I know the car can handle it and if you're a crossover lover you get to do it while sitting slightly higher above the road I don't get that even people and because of that performance upgrade it even has lower sporty-er suspension so it sits quite nicely too let's go talk about it and it's not just the suspension you get with that package you also get the biggest sport brakes and these 21 inch uber turbine wheels they look pretty menacing and I think if I was going for the highest spec model why I would take that 35 mile range hit but that's not insignificant however what you're probably wondering is how it compares in dimensions and design to the X and the three the good news is I brought them along to look how much I can get done without Thomas here and not a bad German or Italian accent to be heard so hopefully you can see that the model Y is actually quite towards and closer to the X in height than the three but the X is a lot longer so in that sense we're still much closer to model three territory than we are to model X territory from the a-pillar backwards it's pretty Model X Tesla apparently tried to avoid the Russian doll look with their lineup but it's standing next to these two still looks like the lovechild of the three and the X kind of like those face blend apps like if you were to put my face with Thomas's face I like doing this stuff on my own size-wise I think they did a great job I'd normally ask Thomas what he thinks of the design but he's not here so I'm curious to see what you guys think let's go look at the back though because that's where the model y gets really exciting because from the back you can see it's a lot more Model X than model 3 and unlike the boot sash trunk of the model 3 this is a hatch and not only does it open automatically there's loads of space unless you option for the 7 seater which we'll talk about in a second ok inside the model Y if you've seen the inside of a model 3 this will look familiar because it is in fact the seats are even the same I feel raised I feel higher but other than that pretty model three more importantly it has the same 15-inch display as the model three which should mean that we get yes the whoopee cushion which is the most important part of any Tesla but I do like the screen a lot it's very intuitive you can scroll through phone radio everything is really easy some people don't like looking to the right to use the screen especially when they're driving I don't mind it that much the indicator showing up here is still a bit of a weird thing to get used to it there is some merit to having stuff directly in front of you and unfortunately there isn't a head-up display there's nothing new in that sense looking out the front despite this being a slightly bigger car we don't get the Model X sweeping glass roof which is incredible but what we do get is this giant glass roof going all the way back to the trunk it looks incredible it's the biggest piece feel more comfortable but again only in the five seater configuration so not only is it comfortable and spacious with a few recline II tricks and a hatchback and fast we're still on the way to full self drive and this is SPECT with that for 7,000 bucks I think currently we're between stages two and three but the idea is and I learned this from a Santa Monica salesman this is going to be at one point able to be a robo taxi that is you can leave it in your driveway and if you've signed it up to the service it will go out and take passengers around and you can make money from your own Tesla well sooner than that it can go pick up your kids from school or leave the garage and pick you up and if all of that's a bit too creepy a bit too futuristic for you then just as a car and I speak to a to be this can be an absolute canyon Carver or in Toronto a pothole Dodger but you just have to put up with some build quality issues because even this one has some panel gaps still but as far as the mission for the Tesla Model Y and the attention it's got while I've been driving around California because surprisingly even non tense moments have pulled over to be like oh is that the new model Y to
