The New iMac with M4 Chip: A Fantastic Value with Some Weirder Configurations
Today's video is sponsored by Basis and their new Nomos 5-in-1 Tractable Desktop Charger. This thing packs a serious punch, it's the world's first 5-in-1 desktop charger with CH2 wireless charging and a retractable cable with 140W total power output over wired and wireless charging. It's adjustable stand lets you charge up your phone while the retractable USB PD 3.1 cable can deliver up to 140W, putting all this together and Nomos can charge five devices simultaneously and that's thanks to three USB-C ports, one USB-A, and the CH2 wireless charger. Plus, you can monitor all of your charging thanks to the digital display with smart power allocation, it can display a simple charging status or more detailed breakdown for each port. This thing is an absolute tank so if you want to learn more about the Nomos 5-in-1 charger check out the link in the description below.
A big thanks to Basis for sponsoring and now let's get back to the video. The Bas model $1299 version of the iMac comes with the bend M4 chip that's an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU, but now of course we finally get 16 GB of RAM as standard so your $200 upgrade brings you up to 24 GB and as with before you can add another $200 to get 512 GB. You can also add Ethernet and a Magic Trackpad if you want but the middle configuration is a little bit strange as with before for an additional $200 you get the full unbend 10-core M4 chip, you also get four Thunderbolt ports instead of two and you get gigabit Ethernet as standard so already that's a pretty good value.
But when we customize it, you'll notice that in addition to this nanotexture glass option they for some reason limit 32 GB of RAM to models equipped with 512 GB of storage. That's a little bit weird I don't really know why they did that and if you do decide to fully spec out this iMac with the nanotexture glass option, 2TB of storage and 32 GB of RAM that's going to set you back nearly three grand but hey you know what I will take it because this is honestly a bigger update than I was expecting. I really thought we were just going to get hey M4 chip and now you get 16 GB of RAM, wow Apple intelligence not that that would have been the worst thing in the world after all.
The performance of the new M4 chip looks really impressive for whatever reason Apple decided to compare the M4 to the original M1 iMac in their press release but they did release material showing a 1.3 times increase in productivity in Excel which is really impressive and they even showed a 10% boost in gaming performance which is also impressive considering that the M4's GPU is a more mild update although to be fair Apple was still kind of weird about it because this iMac seems like a pretty significant update and they actually made an event-style video for it all that footage that I've been showing here you might have been wondering where did this guy get all of those clips from.
And that's because Apple released a 10-minute video about this iMac although I say about this iMac at least half the video was about Apple intelligence and the features that we already know and a lot of the features that aren't even actually available yet and quite frankly, I don't know why this isn't an event between the iPad Mini 7, this iMac, the future Mac Mini that we're expecting possibly tomorrow, and the MacBook Pros either tomorrow or the day after that. I feel like this is more than enough for a normal event and they even have normal event-style videos to go with it so why didn't they just make this an event? It doesn't make any sense to me but hey you know what I'll take it because that means that I get to make more videos for you guys.
I hope you enjoyed this one, I wasn't even really planning on making a video until I saw just how much of an upgrade this iMac was so of course if you found this video useful make sure to get subscribed because we're going to be here covering all of this stuff we've got got new Macs coming out at the end of the week most likely new announcements for tomorrow and possibly Wednesday. Make sure to get subscribed and leave a like down below and let me know what you think of the new iMac, and as usual, thank you guys so much for watching I'll see you in the next one.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe new M4 iMac has just been announced and quite frankly this is a bigger update than I was expecting but before we get into any of the details the number one headline from this announcement is that all M4 Max will start with 16 GB of RAM finally we have been waiting 11 years for Apple to upgrade their base Ram from 8 GB and the time is now honestly it feels pretty good now unfortunately we are still limited to 256 GB as the starting storage for all of these devices but to be quite honest having 16 GB of RAM makes me feel a lot more comfortable about recommending these devices for long-term use now before we get into it there's going to be a lot of announcements from Apple this week and I'm going to be covering all of it so if you don't want to miss anything make sure to get subscribed but let me back up for a second and we'll talk about everything that's new because I was kind of expecting that this M4 iMac was just going going to be a chip swap that's what Apple did last year when they put the M3 chip in the same exact chassis that they announced in 2021 with the M1 chip but this time around we get a bunch of new goodies to help sweeten the deal for one the IMAX are available in a new color palette and perhaps more significantly all of the colors are available on all of the models on the M1 and M3 IMAX if you picked the base model which started at $12.99 you were limited to only a certain range of colors but now you can pick all colors on all configurations another update that Apple has given to the iMac is the center stage camera that has previously been found only on the iPad and you know what this makes a ton of sense the iMac is the perfect place to have this camera and it also enables desk view which I could see being really really useful for families and for people working on school projects and stuff like that and of course something else that was rumored ahead of this launch is that finally Apple has updated the accessories to feature USBC so slowly but surely lightning is being eradicated from all new Apple products and if you opt for the higher-end model which comes with the full 10 core M4 chip you now have the option for nanotexture glass now to be honest I don't know that I would pay $200 for that option especially when it's a $1,500 computer I would much rather put that money into storage if I had to pick one but those higher end models also now get an additional upgrade previously if you picked the higher-end iMac you got four USBC ports on the back with two of them being Thunderbolt now all four of those are Thunderbolt which indicates that the M4 chip has additional Thunderbolt controllers and that explains something that I noticed when the M4 MacBook Pro leaked out and that is that they added the Thunderbolt Port back to the right side if you look at the M3 MacBook Pro on the right hand side of the device it only has SD and HD HDMI so the base M4 chip now has more Thunderbolt support and it comes with 16 GB of RAM as standard in addition to being a pretty significant performance boost the M4 chip is really really good and I think this iMac is a fantastic value but the configurations are a little bit weird this time around but before I explain why a quick word from today's video sponsor today's video is sponsored by basis and their new nomos 5 in1 tractable
