The Salty Road to Growing a Brooklyn-Based Candy Company

The Universal Appeal of Candy: A Conversation with Marissa, Owner of Salty Road

What is universal about candy? It is like magic. You know life is really hard and it's tough, and I feel like it's amazing to have something sweet to take away some of the bitterness of just regular life. As the owner of Salty Road, a Brooklyn-based candy company, I've seen firsthand the power of candy to bring people together and provide a much-needed respite from the stresses of everyday life.

My name is Marissa, and I'm passionate about creating candies that are not only delicious but also unique and authentic. Salty Roads taffy is different from other taffy makers because we add in real flavorings and large grain sea salt, which gives our taffy a distinctive taste that's hard to find elsewhere. From the initial stages of making the taffy, where we mix together a base made from sugar, corn syrup, and evaporated milk, with added fruit puree or spice, to the final stages of cutting, wrapping, and packaging, every step is carefully crafted to bring out the best in our ingredients.

At Salty Road, we take pride in using only the highest-quality ingredients and traditional techniques to create our candies. We're not afraid to experiment and try new things, but at the same time, we're committed to staying true to our roots and the values that have made us successful from the start. As I often say, "making candy is like making art – it's all about attention to detail and passion."

I've always wanted to be a candy maker, even as far back as middle school when I started making lollipops by hand and selling them in the playground. Of course, that endeavor didn't exactly earn me any popularity points, as I received detention for "unauthorized candy business activities." Nonetheless, my passion for candy only grew stronger with time.

In 2011, my friend asked me to start making salt taffy because she couldn't find any local and natural options. That very night, I went home and made my first batch of vanilla taffy using real vanilla beans and large green sea salt. It was the best happy ever taste, and that's when Salty Road was born.

For Valentine's Day, we're excited to introduce a new hard candy that's sure to be a hit with our fans. Our pink pineapple and sweet and spicy cinnamon drop is the first time we've ever made hard candy, and it's been a labor of love to perfect the recipe. We're only going to be selling this special treat to stores in Brooklyn, which feels like coming home after years of spreading our wings. It's going to be just for Valentine's Day, so get ready to try something new and exciting.

As I look back on my journey as a candy maker, I'm constantly reminded of the power of candy to bring people together and provide a much-needed pause in an otherwise chaotic world. When we make candy, we're not just creating treats; we're crafting experiences that evoke emotions and create memories. And for me, there's no greater joy than seeing the smiles on our customers' faces when they taste something truly special.

In the end, it's all about sharing a little bit of magic with the world, one piece of candy at a time. So, go ahead and indulge in your favorite treats – but don't forget to savor every bite and enjoy the experience. And if you're feeling adventurous, be sure to check out our latest creations on the Salty Road channel.
