My Alternator Failed On A Road Trip and I Had To Get Creative

The Reliability of 3 Batteries: A Road Trip Odyssey

We set out on our road trip with a sense of adventure and a hint of unease. Our trusty vehicle, equipped with three batteries, was ready to take on the long haul from DC to New York. The journey began with a sudden stop at an exit, where we discovered that one of our battery packs had given up the ghost. We were relieved to have found this early warning sign, as it would have been disastrous if we hadn't caught it sooner.

The vehicle's light came on, signaling that the alternator had stopped working. We knew we had to act fast to avoid a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Our first priority was to find a suitable replacement battery. After scouring the surrounding area, we finally found a rest stop with a decent-sized parking lot where we could swap out the battery. It was a heart-stopping moment, but our quick thinking and resourcefulness saved the day.

We decided to run three batteries instead of two, just in case things got worse. We knew that if one battery died, we would have at least 80-100 miles of range before hitting another dead spot. This proved to be a wise decision, as we went on to exceed our expectations and make it over 110 miles on the third battery alone.

As we continued driving, we encountered a series of minor setbacks, including a wonky alternator warning light and a failed attempt to turn on the headlights. However, our vehicle persevered, relying on our limited features such as wipers, windows, and headlight. The most harrowing moment came when we pulled back into my driveway after a long day of driving through the night. We were greeted by a sea of potholes and uneven pavement, which threatened to shake the vehicle apart.

Despite these challenges, our trusty vehicle continued to rumble along, its engines humming in protest. Just as we thought things couldn't get any worse, the battery light flickered on once again – this time for the third and final battery. It was a poignant reminder that our journey was nearing its end, but we refused to give up.

In the end, it took us 320 miles to reach the point of no return, when the alternator stopped working altogether. Our vehicle finally gave in, and we coasted to the side of the road in triumph – having successfully completed a record-breaking endurance test on our trusty three-battery setup. As we pulled back into my driveway, exhausted but exhilarated, it was clear that this road trip would be remembered for years to come.

A Post-Mortem Analysis

It's time to analyze what worked and what didn't during our epic journey. On the plus side, our decision to run three batteries proved to be a wise one, as we exceeded our initial expectations and made it over 110 miles on the third battery alone. We also discovered that even in the most desperate of situations, there is always hope – and sometimes, a little bit of creativity can go a long way.

However, this journey was not without its drawbacks. The alternator warning light proved to be a constant companion, and we had to get creative with our makeshift repairs. Our vehicle's lack of features also became an issue, as we relied on wipers, windows, and headlight to navigate the treacherous night ahead. But despite these challenges, our vehicle persevered, thanks in large part to our quick thinking and resourcefulness.

As for what we learned from this journey, it's clear that having a reliable backup plan is essential when venturing into the unknown. Whether you're embarking on a cross-country road trip or simply facing everyday challenges, having a can-do attitude and a trusty sidekick (or three) can make all the difference.

A Word of Caution

To anyone who might be inspired by our tale, I offer these words of caution: always keep a spare battery handy, and never underestimate the power of human ingenuity. With a little bit of creativity and a lot of determination, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.

But for now, it's time to reflect on what we've accomplished. We may have started this journey with three batteries and a hint of uncertainty, but in the end, we emerged victorious – our trusty vehicle and our own resourcefulness proving to be an unbeatable combination.

these are great belts everybody that's got them loves them all right now that we have a fresh one in here we're going to see how far each one goes and then we can do the math as to how many batteries we need to get back so we'll reset the odometer when we get in there um they were not having any mercedes alternators here so luckily the change is easy assuming the super doesn't move and it's got to get towed out we've got three and a half batteries to get back four and a half of all places all right we got our new batteries in here and i reset the trip odometer to zero so no power steering we're not using any uh air conditioning no unnecessary stuff let's see how far we go per battery you can be nice and comfortable standing on the side of the road or we could be drinking whiskey down in my whistle pig layer i think that one sounds much better all right so i just picked up my supra my second one and i didn't want to sit there waiting for the tow truck which was another 45 minutes away so they're doing an unattended tow which is fine they're not going to scratch it but i am now driving my mercedes which broken the way down because the alternator failed with four car batteries in it and i'm going to find out how far you can drive this is an unexpected test but how far you can drive on just a battery without an alternator so i've got four i've got about 260 miles total to get home so i'm shooting and i'm at 28 miles now i'm shooting for 80 miles per battery if i can go 80 miles per battery or even as as few as like 70 miles per battery it should get us there right now we're 28 and looking good minimizing there's no radio i'm not using the air conditioning i'm waiting until it's actually dark to the point where i have to turn on my headlights and i'm using my wipers sparingly so i'm gonna put my windows back down wish me luck and we're gonna answer answer the question that you didn't even really know you wanted to find out all right so the battery alternator stopped vehicle light which was our first like sign of actual trouble last time has come on 80.3 miles in which is actually what we were looking for that puts us at 320 miles with four batteries um i can either run it dry or what i'll probably do is next rest stop swap it out that'll be 90 miles maybe 100 miles on the battery um like i'll i'll try to avoid i mean it's cool to find out just how far they will go but i'll try not to end up on the side of the road or in the construction site or let's just say the delaware memorial bridge uh at night with no lights or hazards so uh we'll swap it out uh next rest area and you know if you ever get a if you're in a pinch and your alternator goes you can always just throw a battery in there and go at least like 80 or 90 miles maybe 100 who knows find out soon all right we're gonna see how good i can do on the quick change with the batteries trying to make this so that we do it right quick nice and convenient uh we made an 85 mile saw chick-fil-a and decided appropriate place to stop there we go just that way this will be my next one and i will put this you know i'll put it on the negative side all you right there you go there where is positive there one two whole new battery probably before the food's even done that's not going anywhere and we're good all right so we've just finished that chick-fil-a i swapped the battery maybe a little prematurely 88.1 miles i'm gonna reset this you know how far we can go maybe we can get done on three battery changes we will find out all right coming up on exit six here on the turnpike uh going northbound the light just came on on my there's the second battery yeah we did uh this is my second battery going on to the third battery we got 91.2 miles versus whatever was the high 70s or low 80s on the previous so we've already exceeded the previous one this is the warning that i can't make go away so this is when stuff starts to get serious um now that i've got plenty of shoulder on the turnpike here and of course we're driving into the apocalypse uh we'll ride this battery out a little further see how far we can go if i start losing other functions like i just tried to turn this light on to illuminate me for filming that didn't work it kills all the convenience features in the car and goes sort of into like power save mode i've got my wipers i've got my windows and i've got my headlight that's all i really need at the moment but we'll see how far we can go on this one see maybe 110 to 115 we've got a 160 total miles to go so we're gonna have a little left over in the third battery if you were trying to guess how many miles this whole thing was gonna do three batteries not four so proof of concept is there but it does and luckily the battery changes are quick but it is a uh crappy situation to be in but where there's a crappy situation this is usually a solution that gets you out of it that's lingenuity brandon got i'm gonna be super quick at least the hazards are on now right no we have no lights how the height is is as i thump through the block by my house of alfred avenue and t9 which is the worst attempt at paving the road in the united states of america we are pulling back in my pause is so you can listen to what the thing sounds like which isn't great i'll be honest um i'll give you a second to enjoy that for it's still moving it got us down to dc and back it with some dramatics but not much but it made it it did the job and i don't know if i would do another road trip in its current state i'll get the alternator change why not let me find out what the engine noise is it could be the end i mean if you so good news is the temperatures are um the battery light just came on on now battery number three so this would be the point at which i would change it i'll take something else home because i have a shop full of cars but it made it about 64 miles before this came on it went 75 miles the first time almost 90 miles a second time and then 65 miles a third time so thanks for watching there's the conclusion uh if you find yourself in a bad spot you can daisy chain a thousand dollars worth of batteries to get from dc back to new york yeah youall right what are you doing what's that what are you doing taking the battery out why are you taking the battery out hey you know the battery died i think it's the alternator so game plan thousand dollars in batteries
