The iPhone 3GS Review: A Closer Look at the New Features and Improvements
One of my favorite things about the iPhone 3GS is actually something I wasn't expecting - you can edit photos, well, it's not exactly editing, but it's still a very cool thing that you can do automatically on your device. Just by twisting and pinching everything, you can trim the edges and make your photos look more professional.
Another big improvement in the 3GS is the graphics, which are going to be very improved with the upgraded RAM. I'm really excited about this because, as we all know, running out of memory is a common problem on our devices. With the 3G model, you always run into memory issues, and it's frustrating when your apps start freezing or becoming unresponsive. But with the 3GS, having extra RAM should help alleviate this issue.
The graphics in the 3G are also going to be improved, but we'll see how that plays out once the games are optimized for the device. It's going to have some new 3D graphic support, which will mean much faster and nicer-looking 3D games.
Now, there are some slight problems with this, because if they really optimize it for the 3G model, it might not work as well on the older models or look worse. But we'll just have to wait and see how that plays out.
The design of the iPhone 3GS is almost identical to the original iPhone 3G. I was expecting some major changes, but there wasn't much - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The iPhone is very recognizable, so it's not like they need to make drastic changes to keep it looking new and fresh.
One feature that I really want to highlight is the magnometer compass, which basically allows you to use your phone as a compass. You can download an app from Google Maps that will let you change your orientation, which is a very cool feature.
The iPhone 3GS also supports voice control, which is a great feature for accessibility. Whenever you touch something on the screen, it will invert the video and make everything easier to read.
Another new feature is Nike+ support, which I'm sure everyone was expecting. It's just another example of how Apple is always pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible with our devices.
Finally, let's talk about battery life. With the 3G model, you had six hours of internet time over Wi-Fi, and now with the 3GS, that number has increased to nine hours. The video playback has also improved significantly, from seven to ten hours. And if we're counting audio, that number is up to 24 hours, compared to 30 hours on the 2G model.
But despite these improvements, the 3G talk time remains at five hours, which I find a bit puzzling given the bigger battery and improved efficiency of the new device. Maybe it's got a more powerful 3G antenna or something, but we'll just have to wait and see how that plays out.
Pricing is probably one of the biggest issues with this device. As you can imagine, many people are unhappy with the price point, and I don't blame them. It's always frustrating when Apple makes us pay more for their devices than our friends who are still using older models.
But if you're interested in learning more about the iPhone 3GS, I recommend checking out a great video by John from Lakers, which explains the pricing issue really nicely. I agree with him one hundred percent, and I won't even begin to get into it here - just go watch the video!
