Fractal Design Define S Case Review ft. Fractal Venturi Fans

The Fine A-RM: A Silent Case with Extra Clearance

So you have extra clearance for your motherboard or memory fractal design has also kept the mod you vent system from the fine r5 so you can cover or uncover the top with these foam covered panels. So right around now you may be asking yourself where the heck are the storage mounts on this thing fractals actually included a good amount on the back there are now five removable trays behind the motherboard for your hard drives with two of them dedicated to SSDs we particularly like these soft velcro straps and thumb screws that don't fall out when undone. There's about an inch of space behind the motherboard for cables and nearly two inches in front near the hard drive bays the rubber grommets are large enough that we never accidentally pushed one out of place even when threading the massive amount of cabling through.

We're using sleeved cables from cable mod by the way and it's almost a shame that you can't see more of the cables beautiful so what does it like to build them to the fine ass what kind of experience is it well Anthony decided to put a swift tech h2 20 X expandable CPU cooler and the Asus Ares 3 graphics card inside we're using very tall HyperX predator ddr4 memory and one of the thickest radiator / reservoir combinations with zero conflicts he didn't have time to build a fully custom loop but did manage to throw in another r9 295x2 video card inside just to show off how much room there is even if this radiator was 360 millimeters long we'd have no problems fitting our reservoir / pump combination on the rails now given that the divine ass has main features is cooling we were curious about the air flow so we put it to our fog machine test fractal design has just released their new venturi series of fans so we use them all around the case.

They feature full rubber mounts static pressure or airflow variants and their 140 millimeter models even come with 120 millimeter mounts they have quite a bit of heft to them and have zero flex in the frame they remind us of a certain beige competitor but in a cooler color scheme. We first compared the new venturi high static pressure version to one of their first case fans found in the define r2 as you can see there is an absolutely huge difference in static pressure with the Venturi's we noticed a spiral effect in the middle and the fog dissipated much faster.

We then compared it to the 140 millimeter dynamic series fans that are included with this case as you can see the 120 millimeter venturi actually manages to push a larger area of fog at the same rpm as the larger 140 millimeter fan for users out there looking for the ultimate in pressure and noise low go for the 140 millimeters static pressure Venturi's since the case in takes air from the front side vents we had to do our fog test in two parts. The first test was with our front panel on which shows how effective the openings are for drawing in cool air they're definitely not as good as Direct unrestricted airflow but you shouldn't run into air starvation.

For the second part we tested it with the front panel off to demonstrate how effective the cooling inside the case is with 320 millimeter vent Erie's mounted in the front two on top and the stock 140 millimeter fan in the back you can see how there are no dead spots inside the case the fog is quickly brought inside and quickly dissipated. Finally we did these same tests but with the two stock 140 millimeter fans that are included with the case one intake in the front and one exhaust in the back out of the box you'll get cooling that is effective enough for over 90% of people out there if you're running multiple video cards or we live in a very hot environment then you'll definitely need to add some additional fans.

Well there you have it keen viewers in the audience might notice that a window doesn't really make sense for a silent case but it does come in a windowless version with a padded left panel if you want that even though the case is less expensive than the regular defined series it definitely does not feel like a stripped down version if anything it kind of feels like a side grade an alternative our only suggestion would be to have side panels that swing into place as opposed to the little clips that you have to slide on. It's not a problem if you cable managed the back properly but it's still something nice to have just just think about it fractal well that's it for this video guys let us know in the comments below what you think of the changes fractal made with the defined s would you like to see more variants of the defined line optimized for different uses sound off below thanks for watching guys like or dislike the video whatever floats your boat and don't forget to subscribe for more videos like this from NCIX

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enfractal design has always set the bar when it comes to smart well-designed cases just look at the defined series they literally redefined the silent case market when it came to water cooling they were never quite as flexible as some other manufacturers the new define s case sets out to change that and at a lower price point to boot now fractal is one of those companies that actually listens to their customers and uses their feedback to improve their products many enthusiasts now are ditching their optical drive bays in favor of more space for better air flow hard drives or water cooling components instead of having to buy a hundred and twenty dollar define r5 and ripping out the internal bays the new define S has already done that for you now let's start with a front it looks similar to the other defined cases but it's no longer a hinged door it is now one solid piece of brushed plastic with vents along the side for air flow popping it off you'll find the very sturdy air filter that attaches via magnets and a hinge very smart design compared to finicky rails that can be hard to align on top you'll find a headphone and microphone jack reset button power button and two black USB 3 ports on the right is just a regular side panel it's padded with foam on the inside and heavy and stiff enough to make an innuendo joke but but we won't do that on the left side you'll notice a much larger window than before since there aren't any ugly optical drives to show in there anymore the widened window allows you to show off any fans radiators or reservoirs that can be placed along the rail mounting system speaking of the rail system the entire front of the case is now covered with slots for pretty much anything you could ever mount if you've ever done a water cooling loop before you'll know how difficult finding a place where your reservoir can be and then there's a hassle of having to drill your own mount with these rails you can essentially mount any reservoir or pump with ease on those front rails you'll find support for radiators up to 360 millimeters if you're using a loop without a dedicated reservoir like ours you'll be able to fit a 45 millimeter thick radiator and push-pull without even getting close to the motherboard on top there's room for another 360 millimetre radiator or even a 420 millimeter radiator if you're using 120 millimeter sized components the amounts are staggered forward so you have extra clearance for your motherboard or memory fractal design has also kept the mod you vent system from the fine r5 so you can cover or uncover the top with these foam covered panels so right around now you may be asking yourself where the heck are the storage mounts on this thing fractals actually included
