Popin Cookin' Curry Set - Whatcha Eating #83

I'm Back with My Long-Anticipated Popin' Cookin' Kare Set Unboxing and Review

Hi, YouTubers! It's Emmy, and I'm back with a long-awaited, much-requested unboxing and review of the Popin' Cookin' kare set. Let's just get right to it – it's this amazing Japanese curry set that I've been eager to try out for quite some time.

For those who don't know Japanese curry or kare, let me introduce you to a unique take on Indian curry that has become an integral part of Japanese food and cuisine. It's sweeter than traditional Indian curry and less spicy, making it a delightful alternative for those looking to explore Japanese flavors. As I mentioned earlier, kare shops and curry-flavored food are quite popular in Japan, with the term "cut" used instead of "curry." You can find all sorts of cut-up foods, including breads that have been fried and filled with this kind of curry.

This particular set comes with a French word for croquette, which refers to a type of deep-fried food. Upon opening the packet, you'll find three main components: a mixing tray, three packets of krispies (a Japanese-style rice cracker), and a mixing spoon. The smell is quite intriguing – oniony and savory, which might remind you of onion dip. This set uses instant rice, similar to others in my sushi kit or bento box reviews, but with a distinct scent that's hard to ignore.

To prepare the kare, you'll need to mix the three packets together, adding your mixing spoon to create a dough-like consistency. Divide the dough into three pieces and shape them into football-shaped, heart-shaped, or star shapes – whichever you prefer! These will form the crispy exterior of your cut-up snacks. Once you've created your desired shapes, crush the krispies and coat them evenly.

The next step involves cooking the shapes in a pan until they're golden brown and crispy on the outside. Then, it's time to make the butter sauce – which might surprise you with its unique ingredients like carrot and peas. Stir these into the curry mixture thoroughly, ensuring everything is well combined. Serve the cut-up snacks over rice, and get ready for an unusual culinary experience.

As I took my first bite of this Popin' Cookin' kare set, I was surprised by the unexpected flavors and textures. The initial reaction was that it didn't taste like mashed potatoes as I had expected. Instead, there's a little bit of chewiness to it, combined with softness. The flavors are savory and slightly sweet, reminiscent of seasoned crackers and potato.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the lack of crispiness on the outside – unlike deep-fried foods, these tend to be less crispy due to their powdered nature. However, this doesn't detract from the overall taste experience. If you're familiar with Japanese cut-up snacks or croquettes, you might appreciate this alternative take on flavors and textures.

As a special treat during the holidays, I have two sets of Popin' Cookin' kare sets to give away to my dear friends and fellow YouTubers! To enter, simply leave a comment below and ensure you're subscribed. In one week's time, I'll be using Random.org to randomly choose two winners for this amazing giveaway.
