are DIY face masks actually safe & other COVID-19 q's answered!

The Importance of Protecting Ourselves and Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As we navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's essential to remember that individual actions can have a significant impact on our collective well-being. One such action is protecting ourselves and our families when living with someone who works in an essential service industry. Essential workers, such as those in healthcare, grocery stores, and other critical sectors, play a vital role in keeping our communities running during this time.

However, the risk of contracting COVID-19 is higher for individuals who live with essential workers, especially if they are not following proper protocols to protect themselves. To mitigate this risk, it's crucial to understand the measures that essential workers are taking to protect themselves while on the job. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves are commonly used, and many workplaces have implemented strict cleaning and sanitation procedures.

When essential workers come home from work, it's equally important for family members to take precautions to minimize their exposure risk. This may involve changing into clean clothes immediately upon arrival home and practicing good hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water. Even if the virus is not present on the worker's clothing, following these protocols can help prevent transmission.

The Balance Between Individual Rights and Collective Well-being

A delicate balance must be struck between individual rights and collective well-being during times of public health crisis like COVID-19. In Canada, for example, the government has taken measures to encourage social distancing while avoiding lockdowns that could have significant economic consequences. The goal is to find a balance that protects both individuals and communities.

One of the key challenges in this balancing act is recognizing the varying degrees of risk associated with different essential services. While healthcare workers are undoubtedly at high risk, others working in grocery stores, food production, and other critical sectors also pose risks to themselves and their families. Understanding these risks is crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate them.

Protecting Ourselves Through Physical Distancing

As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, it's essential to recognize that even if data shows a bend in the curve, the incubation period of the virus means that our actions taken weeks ago may not yet be reflected in case numbers. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain physical distancing measures, such as avoiding close contact with others and staying at least 2 meters apart.

By taking these precautions, we can significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect ourselves, our families, and our communities. This collective effort is critical to controlling the pandemic and ensuring that our healthcare systems remain strong.

Supporting Essential Workers and Frontline Staff

One way to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of essential workers and frontline staff is by supporting their efforts through donations. In Canada, the Food Banks of Canada have been a vital lifeline for those struggling during this time. By donating to these organizations, we can help ensure that our most vulnerable members of society receive the support they need.

As we continue to navigate this pandemic, it's essential to remember the critical role that frontline workers and volunteers are playing in keeping our communities safe. From healthcare workers to grocery store employees, these individuals are putting themselves at risk every day to care for us and provide us with the necessities. By supporting them through donations or other forms of recognition, we can show our gratitude for their selfless service.

A Big Thank You

As our time comes to a close today, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. New, who has helped us raise an impressive $725 for the Food Banks of Canada. Your contribution will make a significant difference in the lives of countless individuals and families across Canada. We also want to express our deepest gratitude to frontline workers and volunteers who are putting themselves at risk every day to keep us safe.

Your dedication, hard work, and sacrifice are truly inspiring, and we're honored to have had the opportunity to recognize your efforts through this special episode of our show. As we move forward in this pandemic, let's continue to support each other and prioritize our collective well-being. Thank you for watching, and we'll see you next time!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys my name is Becky and my name is Kelsey and today we are super excited and honestly very honored to be able to host this interview all about our help during this Kovan 19 crisis we wanted to keep this interview fun and light-hearted during this difficult time but our main goal and most important goal is to get facts straight from the source from Health Canada alright let's begin the game there is real money at stake here this is jeopardize a game show where your host the Soraa girls Kelsey and Becky learned how do not jeopardize their health and the health of their country due to the köppen 19 crisis introducing today's contestant an infectious disease expert Canada's deputy chief public health officer coming to us from Ottawa Canada dr. Howard knew hi how are you I'm pretty good okay we don't want to take up too much of your time so we'll jump right to the game these are important kovin 19 related questions that we have and we've included some of their audience have submitted as well all right and dr. new the more questions that you're able to answer the more money that we will donate to food banks Canada Kovan 19 response fund so no pressure but feel free to answer as many questions as you can so if you want to take it away you can pick a category and dollar amount okay let's start right at the left daily light for $50 the question is can I venture into nature or go to my cottage during sulfate isolation hmm well the thing is it depends where you live because certainly if you're not required to self isolate and stay at home because you actually been diagnosed with kovat 19 or you're a close-contact of someone and you're allowed to as you say go out in public obviously limiting as much as possible I would say that yes if you're close to nature and you're close to your home that Savior here in Ottawa I'm close to a nice part so I can go out to maybe take a nice walk in nature but in terms of going to the condition that's been a bit of a contentious issue and and the reason for that is let's say in Ontario a lot of folks have cottages up in what we call cottage country the issue there is that if everyone were to go up to their cottage it might overwhelm local resources especially the hospitals and the healthcare services available and so you hear a lot of health care public health officials even uh premiers uh encouraging people please stay at home where you might have better access to health care services should you get looking at the infrastructure and what's available in terms of health care services it might not be to the same standard and that's what that's what the issue is so a two-part answer yes what nature but only if you're close to your home and close to maybe having access to health care services wonderful thank you for clearing that up all right should we do a in another category and price them out okay how about a mental health for $25 all right the question is if we find the news overwhelming where should we go for the most important updates is there a single source that you would recommend you have to go to what I call trusted internet sites for example obviously with the Government of Canada there's a Canada dot see a website where you can get updates if you're an epidemiological geek or just learning about epidemiology you can see all these wonderful graphs epidemic curves etc also a good resources case you want to vail yourselves of doing a self assessment or wellness tools lots of good stuff on our website other key websites that would focus people too would be a the one from the World Health Organization that's a sort of the key international public health agency and if you go to their website you can be assured of getting a good neutral obviously a science and evidence informed information thank you all right okay let's go essential services for $50.00 essential services good question all right I want to support local restaurants is the food prepared are these local restaurants considered safe and should I be ordering from there yes I think it's very important to uh support your local businesses including local restaurants there's certainly no weapons today that Kovach 19 or at least the virus that causes cope at 19 is assertive are transmitted through food just like with any other sort of biological risk if there's good food handling practices and and the food's preparing it in the safe manner according to all of the local sort of a Public Health sort of a guidance and you won't get co19 and you won't get salmonella or all the other foodborne illnesses that we're always that worried about okay I'm just going across for every category so let's try big picture for $50.00 okay so the question is has the peak of the curve in Canada already come or do we think it's still coming okay that's a that's a very interesting question depending on when this this might actually get there because it's changing everyday so my answer to that is that you really don't know until you're actually past it because how do you know if you're at the peak until it's sort of the rearview mirror and you already have several days about declining cases then you can actually say aha the peak was you know several days ago the other part of the answer that it's hard to say for Canada as a whole because in many ways we're the some at the national level for all the individual epidemic curves which are occurring in each province and territory so some provinces territories they're further along they're epidemic curve for example maybe in British Columbia and of course in the northern territories Atlantic provinces they might have a different epidemic curve but I would say that sort of optimistically based on everything that's been done by Canadians across the country doing all the right things practicing physical distancing lots of hand-washing good cough etiquette and so on I would say that at least we're starting to bend the curve and we thought the wait a while to see or actually a pass the piece wow I'm only going in fifty dollars I'm a bit of a chicken so maybe I should go diagnose for $100 diagnose for $100 all right how do I get myself to the hospital if I'm not feeling well and I don't have my own vehicle well my answer to that is if the most important thing to do is know what the numbers for your local authorities because you should always call your local authorities and get their guidance in terms of what you could or should do where you might need to go in terms of maybe getting further assess and they can also give you advice about how best to get there if obviously you're in serious shape there might even be a sort of a 911 call and you know an ambulance coming to pick you up but that depends on what the circumstances are when you call your local authorities got it okay let's go on let's go for a diagnose for $25.00 all right so diagnosed with $25.00 how soon should we start seeing symptoms is it really two weeks 14 days well that's a good question I based on the experience and the scientific evidence we say that the range or that what we call the incubation period which is at the time from when you're actually are exposed and effective at the fire to the time that you developed symptoms the outer range seems to be 14 days and that's why with that sort of caution that normally people if they have to self isolate and so on they say hey say sort of inside your house for up to 14 days the media are certainly what we're seeing for most people it usually is about five six seven days so about a week but you never know so we don't want to take chances and therefore we say if you need to self isolate it's 14 days well that's going diagnose what we might as well finish this column for $50.00 okay wonderful so the question here is if you had Kovac 19 and recovered could you still pass it on to others oh that's a that's a very good question and to be honest we just really don't know the answer as at this point it's such a new virus and the scientific evidence is still being accumulated what I can say is that for most other respiratory infections by with viruses and so on your body and develops antibodies once you get over the illness and that usually gives you what we call a pretty long immunity maybe I often lifelong in the case of Kovac 19 it's not quite certain yet some some people have done what we call serological testing there are some reports of people who have had over 90 recovered felt fine and then they actually apparently it seems to be that they got infection again so there's still lots of our research that needs to be done in that area and certainly I wouldn't I wouldn't sort of give everyone who's previously had copa90 nough infection to pass and say oh it's absolutely no chance you could pass it on to others all right great to know we just don't know yet all right so here's one finish off the diagnosed column here since again for ten dollars all right diagnose for ten dollars will a hot drink and citrus help weaken or eliminate the virus well based on what we know but about the virus I would say not at this point there really are no proven treatments unfortunately don't even have a vaccine against this virus if you're feeling a bit achy and weak and you want to take a hot drink at citrus it may make you feel better but I wouldn't say that it would necessarily do anything to specifically weaken or or eliminate the virus ah boy let me see here how about mental health for $100 okay go into the big ones alright if I have a close friend with a mental illness is it okay to visit and help them is a tough one because I think lots of people would love to visit to family friends everyone's feeling I think a little down sometimes because you missed that that the physical or social contact that with folks it's not quite the same in terms of doing a virtual a call or video call with someone but I think in these times that people understand and recognize the importance what we call physical distancing because the the way the virus is transmitted it really is person-to-person therefore visiting a close friend even though they may need your help I would say at this point it's tough like you really should try and call them out with the video call and rather than visiting them in person that's I think the safest thing to do for everyone concerned that's great advice thank you okay let's go here $100 for daily life all right so my family lives in separate homes and we've been self isolating for at least two weeks can we still go and see each other there's a tough point and the thing is that some people might argue with the sign so yeah everyone's fine dipped under two weeks etc the way I put it and someone's asked me this question of just a few days ago but people staying in their bubble it might be you personally if you're living alone or it might be you and you're your own individual household staying that and that that bubble and and and the trick is to keep your bubble intact I'm not first anyone else's bubble of I started but going to too close to someone else and so I would say that it's tough but you just don't know all of those different types of circumstances that different people and different bubbles might experience although you might think it's clear and simple and straightforward oh yeah we've been fine for two weeks they've been flying for two weeks you just never know in terms of the other types of interactions and so I would say to be on the safe side well whatever bubble you started in maintain that bubble otherwise I think in some ways it becomes like that sort of a alter of Hollywood game or that movie six degrees of separation or your sixth again Kevin Bacon where you know everyone can see but somehow be connected like you know you might just think that you're in touch with so-and-so but they were in touch with so-and-so else and goes on and on and on about how you have these possible chains of transmission ma let's go out here $25 for daily life we're wondering how effective DIY face masks really are well it depends because the first point to be made is that in terms of the different types of masks I think that the points been made that for what we call medical grade mask you know like the n95 and so on definitely we have to save that for the frontline workers uh it's different for what we call do a do-it-yourself mask or face coverings because those are what we call non-medical type mask and the thinking there is actually different you know if you were to wear one is an option it's not because you're trying to protect yourself from others it's because you actually want to protect others from you you might be starting with a mild you know sort of a respiratory symptoms a bit of a cough and so on and by having a face covering in essence it's the same thing as a coughing an interior elbow there's a bit of a barrier and if you worked it off or speak moistly as our prime minister said to prevent you from breathing or speaking moistly on them what a terrible image then you might actually the droplets might be cocked and serve that face covering up I rather than just going out into the air and exposing others uh I think our further do-it-yourself Massa I think it's a good option if for example you're going into a public it's obviously if it's essential and also if you're pretty sure that it might be difficult to maintain that 2 meter distance so maybe if you're taking public transport or you're you're maybe going to a grocery store where you know I know they're taking there right nurses to keep customers apart but it might not always be possible then in those cases it's acceptable though obviously it's a good option to out have a wait hall and do it yourself mask but having said that I think you should look on the internet I think we have some good instructions on our website because it also depends in terms of the material you use right and uh how many times it's folded I think a simple trick someone told me is that the material that you want to use if you hold it and are about to make a mask if you can hold it up to the window and start the sunlight and if you can't really see through it then it so I'll be pretty good in terms I serve capturing your droplets to post is something that's pretty translucent that's a great tip okay so daily light for ten dollars okay so this is a question that we find ourselves personally wondering because we make a lot of things and we need to get a lot of supplies so we're wondering can we order DIY supplies or other non-essential items online well I think the answer to that one is that you could if in some ways you're doing it that might help for example in this case making your own face coverings because in some ways it's supporting all of our individual and collective efforts to a stop and prevent cope in nineteen from you know further transmission then yes but certainly I've seen on the online sites I think there's so many people that maybe depend on what we might call essential items for their personal health that certainly that would be a priority for all of these online companies to be shipping those types of items first in advance of what we might call non-essential items so I think obviously use discretion but if you were to order items didn't really think about it is it essential is it something that I need from my own personal health or something that might obviously help in terms of hope in nineteen if it's just done or Noah a nice little gadget toy or something that really has nothing to do with the open 19 and not your own personal health and I would probably say yeah you could probably wait till later on good to know okay how about big picture for $100 big picture $100 all right how's Canada going to take control of koban 19 if we aren't taking measures as stricly that we've seen in places such as China or South country South Korea well I think overall we were doing a good a good job in Canada there's is always that balance and it's not to compare countries what might be sort of acceptable or done and in some countries in a country like Canada based on sort of our culture our norms what seems to be the right balance between what you might call individual rights versus sort of the rights of the collective or the community that's that's always a tricky one but certainly I could say that based on everything we've done in Canada we haven't quote locked down specifically but by encouraging in some ways are also by certain of what we well maybe government or local measures to really have physical distancing I think our efforts are actually paying off and in terms of at least starting to bend the curve so we need to keep at it the one point I think people need to understand is that even if the data today shows that oh we're starting to bend the curve it's important to remember that the data that you're seeing today is actually the result of actions and activities we've all done about two or three weeks ago yeah we think about it you know with the incubation period how long it takes to actually need to come down with symptoms you might wait a few days that you finally see the doctor get your lab test the lab test result gets reported they report those to local officials it finally comes up to the national level that takes some time so we can't let go of all of those important things we're doing together and not waste that effort so whatever you're doing today you might not see the results show up in terms of case counts so maybe two three weeks from now I think we're on the right track and what we're doing I think is is working well yeah all right well that is good to know okay let's keep going I'm sure if I essential services for ten dollars okay so the question here is how do we protect ourselves and families if we live with an essential service worker who's still going out to work and then coming home good question up I think there's varying degrees that for example the essential worker I think is not restricted obviously many people think of essential workers as you know people work in the healthcare system and obviously out there in the front lines of being in a hospital and the long-term care facility and so on but also people working in other essential services obviously the people making sure that we have a food on the shelves and their grocery stores and so on and so forth I think those people in essential services they've been getting guidance in terms of how to protect themselves while they're quote on the job obviously with personal protective equipment etc and when they come home it's very important I think I've heard stories obviously from nurses and so on that as soon as they come home what do you do sometimes is actually they change from their quote work clothes in the garage you know maybe they put their their their clothes in the in the laundry machine right away make sure they they do good hand hygiene washed her hands etc and so on everything should be fine obviously they can hopefully have been protected at work and if there's any a small chance that the virus might be on the the clothes that they're you know obviously wearing to go back home and that's properly are laundered and so on then there should be any problem but even then to be on the safe side that other family members and the essential worker may decide that you know in the best interest of everyone if they're their home permits it to practice what we call may be safe physical distancing as well great answer all right well we are out of time today for our little game show so thank you so much to you doctor new you have helped us raise say a total of seven hundred and twenty five dollars alright by answering all these wonderful questions and we are gonna donate that to the food banks of Canada great I'm glad thank you so much for joining us today and stay safe okay you too all right fine we are officially out of time today but a big THANK YOU and around the class to dr. new helped us raise seven hundred and twenty five dollars going to the food banks of Canada also a huge thank you to frontline workers and volunteers during this time into you for staying should we start seeing symptoms is it really two weeks 14 days well that's a good question I based on the experience and the scientific evidence we say that the range or that what we call the incubation period which is at the time from when you're actually are exposed and effective at the fire to the time that you developed symptoms the outer range seems to be 14 days and that's why with that sort of caution that normally people if they have to self isolate and so on they say hey say sort of inside your house for up to 14 days the media are certainly what we're seeing for most people $100 okay go into the big ones alright if I have a close friend with a mental illness is it okay to visit and help them is a tough one because I think lots of people would love to visit to family friends everyone's feeling I think a little down sometimes because you missed that that the physical or social contact that with folks it's not quite the same in terms of doing a virtual a call or video call with someone but I think in these times that people understand and recognize the importance what we call physical distancing because the the way the virus is transmitted it really is person-to-person therefore visiting a close friend even though they may need your help I would say at this point it's tough like you really should try and call them out with the video call and rather homes and we've been self isolating for at least two weeks can we still go and see each other there's a tough point and the thing is that some people might argue with the sign so yeah everyone's fine dipped under two weeks etc the way I put it and someone's asked me this question of just a few days ago but people staying in their bubble it might be you personally if you're living alone or it might be you and you're your own individual household staying that and that that bubble and and and the trick is to keep your bubble intact I'm not first anyone else's bubble of I started but going to too close to someone else and so I would say that it's tough but you just don't know all of those different types of circumstances that different people and different bubbles might experience although you might think it's clear and simple and straightforward oh yeah we've been fine for two weeks they've been flying for two weeks you just never know in terms of the other types of interactions and so I would say to be on the safe side well whatever bubble you started in maintain that bubble otherwise I think in some ways it becomes like that sort of a alter of Hollywood game or that movie six degrees of separation or your sixth again Kevin Bacon where you know everyone can see but somehow be connected like you know you might just think that you're in touch with so-and-so but they were in touch with so-and-so else and goes on and on and on about how you have these possible chains of transmission ma let's go out here $25 for daily life we're wondering how effective DIY face masks really are well it depends because the first point to be made is that in terms of the different types of masks I think that the points been made that for what we call medical grade mask you know like the n95 and so on definitely we have to save that for the frontline workers uh it's different for what we call do a do-it-yourself mask or face coverings because those are what we call non-medical type mask and the thinking there is actually different you know if you were to wear one is an option it's not because you're trying to protect yourself from others it's because you actually want to protect others from you you might be starting with a mild you know sort of a respiratory symptoms a bit of a cough and so on and by having a face covering in essence it's the same thing as a coughing an interior elbow there's a bit of a barrier and if you worked it off or speak moistly as our prime minister said to prevent you from breathing or speaking moistly on them what a terrible image then you might actually the droplets might be cocked and serve that face covering up I rather than just going out into the air and exposing others uh I think our further do-it-yourself Massa I think it's a good option if for example you're going into a public it's obviously if it's essential and also if you're pretty sure that it might be difficult to maintain that 2 meter distance so maybe if you're taking public transport or you're you're maybe going to a grocery store where you know I know they're taking there right nurses to keep customers apart but it might not always be possible then in those cases it's acceptable though obviously it's a good option to out have a wait hall and do it yourself mask but having said that I think you should look on the internet I think we have some good instructions on our website because it also depends in terms of the material you use right and uh how many times it's folded I think a simple trick someone told me is that the material that you want to use if you hold it and are about to make a mask if you can hold it up to the window and start the sunlight and if you can't really see through it then it so I'll be pretty good in terms I serve capturing your droplets to post is something that's pretty translucent that's a great tip okay so daily light for ten dollars okay so this is a question that we find ourselves personally wondering because we make a lot of things and we need to get a lot of supplies so we're wondering can we order DIY supplies or other non-essential items online well I think the answer to that one is that you could if in some ways you're doing it that might help for example in this case making your own face coverings because in some ways it's supporting all of our individual and collective efforts to a stop and prevent cope in nineteen from you know further transmission then yes but certainly I've seen on the online sites I think there's so many people that maybe depend on what we might call essential items for their personal health that certainly that would be a priority for all of these online companies to be shipping those types of items first in advance of what we might call non-essential items so I think obviously use discretion but if you were to order items didn't really think about it is it essential is it something that I need from my own personal health or something that might obviously help in terms of hope in nineteen if it's just done or Noah a nice little gadget toy or something that really has nothing to do with the open 19 and not your own personal health and I would probably say yeah you could probably wait till later on good to know okay how about big picture for $100 big picture $100 all right how's Canada going to take control of koban 19 if we aren't taking measures as stricly that we've seen in places such as China or South country South Korea well I think overall we were doing a good a good job in Canada there's is always that balance and it's not to compare countries what might be sort of acceptable or done and in some countries in a country like Canada based on sort of our culture our norms what seems to be the right balance between what you might call individual rights versus sort of the rights of the collective or the community that's that's always a tricky one but certainly I could say that based on everything we've done in Canada we haven't quote locked down specifically but by encouraging in some ways are also by certain of what we well maybe government or local measures to really have physical distancing I think our efforts are actually paying off and in terms of at least starting to bend the curve so we need to keep at it the one point I think people need to understand is that even if the data today shows that oh we're starting to bend the curve it's important to remember that the data that you're seeing today is actually the result of actions and activities we've all done about two or three weeks ago yeah we think about it you know with the incubation period how long it takes to actually need to come down with symptoms you might wait a few days that you finally see the doctor get your lab test the lab test result gets reported they report those to local officials it finally comes up to the national level that takes some time so we can't let go of all of those important things we're doing together and not waste that effort so whatever you're doing today you might not see the results show up in terms of case counts so maybe two three weeks from now I think we're on the right track and what we're doing I think is is working well yeah all right well that is good to know okay let's keep going I'm sure if I essential services for ten dollars okay so the question here is how do we protect ourselves and families if we live with an essential service worker who's still going out to work and then coming home good question up I think there's varying degrees that for example the essential worker I think is not restricted obviously many people think of essential workers as you know people work in the healthcare system and obviously out there in the front lines of being in a hospital and the long-term care facility and so on but also people working in other essential services obviously the people making sure that we have a food on the shelves and their grocery stores and so on and so forth I think those people in essential services they've been getting guidance in terms of how to protect themselves while they're quote on the job obviously with personal protective equipment etc and when they come home it's very important I think I've heard stories obviously from nurses and so on that as soon as they come home what do you do sometimes is actually they change from their quote work clothes in the garage you know maybe they put their their their clothes in the in the laundry machine right away make sure they they do good hand hygiene washed her hands etc and so on everything should be fine obviously they can hopefully have been protected at work and if there's any a small chance that the virus might be on the the clothes that they're you know obviously wearing to go back home and that's properly are laundered and so on then there should be any problem but even then to be on the safe side that other family members and the essential worker may decide that you know in the best interest of everyone if they're their home permits it to practice what we call may be safe physical distancing as well great answer all right well we are out of time today for our little game
