Apple Reveals iPhone 10 at Exclusive Event
Apple recently revealed its brand new iPhone 10 at a special event held at the Steve Jobs theater at Apple Park. The company had invited Apple Insider to spend some hands-on time with the device, which will be available in silver and space great color options when it launches in November.
The iPhone 10 comes equipped with an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch super retina HD display, boasting new OLED technology that makes for better contrast ratios to support HDR content. Additionally, the screen features true tone, which changes the color of the screen to adopt a backlight lighting as rumored. This feature allows for a more immersive viewing experience and improved color accuracy.
The home button has been deleted from the iPhone 10, replaced by revamped gestures that Apple says is an evolution over physical controls. Despite the change, users will still be able to bring up their Apple Pay cards with a double tap on the sleep/wake button, which doubles as a trigger for Siri instead of pressing the home button to wake a phone's display. Furthermore, tapping on the screen can achieve the same effect.
Inside the iPhone 10 is powered by Apple's A11 Bionic chip, newly designed silicone that features an onboard neural engine and upgraded graphics processing unit. The new device also gets a host of new sensors embedded into the front notch, including a dot projector infrared camera and flood illuminator, which work in concert with neural networks to power Apple's new biometric solution Face ID.
Face ID takes the place of Touch ID, scanning a user's face for unlocking their iPhone and making Apple Pay purchases to help protect against errant input. According to Apple, the only locks an iPhone when a user is looking directly at it. The rear cameras carry over last year's 12-megapixel specification but come with a new color filter, deeper pixels, and an improved Apple-designed image signal processor compared to the iPhone 8 Plus.
The iPhone 10 telephoto lens sports a faster F2.4 aperture, and both lenses are supported by optical image stabilization. This allows users to shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second and 1080p at 240 frames per second for slo-mo video. Portrait mode also gets a new portrait lighting mode for both front and rear cameras, allowing users to change the lighting effect on a subject in space even in post-processing.
The new added sensors for Face ID are also used for Apple's new animated emoji feature, which masters face onto a variety of animated emojis up to 50 facial features, supported from happy to sad to mad. The sensors also help with facial recognition and Snapchat in other apps. Additionally, the iPhone 10 upgraded speakers provide an improved audio experience, with iPhones typically being 25% louder than their predecessors and featuring deeper bass.
The back of the device is now glass, allowing for wireless charging using aftermarket Qi chargers from companies like Belkin. Returning to an iPhone 4 design, the band holding the glass together is stainless steel instead of Apple's usual aluminum. This new design provides a sleeker look while maintaining durability.
Pricing for the iPhone 10 starts at $999 for the 64-gigabyte model and goes up to $1,149 for the 256-gigabyte model. Both models are available through iPhone Upgrade Plans. The new iPhone 10 will be available to order on October 27th and will begin shipping on November 3rd.
