The Bearing of the Saw: A Cautionary Tale of Childhood Impulsiveness

As a child, I have to admit that I was quite reckless and impulsive at times. My brother and I would often go on adventures in the woods, cutting down trees and exploring their surroundings with little concern for potential consequences. One particular incident stands out as a prime example of my childhood recklessness.

My brother and I were walking through the woods one day, armed with a saw, when we spotted a sturdy vine hanging from a tree branch. We decided to test its strength by cutting it down and using it as a makeshift swing. As we were about to attempt our first swing, another kid happened upon us, seemingly unaware of the potential danger lurking beneath his feet. The vine was positioned over a ravine with thorn bushes at the bottom, making it the perfect (or rather, terrible) test subject for my brother and me.

Without hesitation, I invited the kid to join in on our impromptu swing session. He happily obliged, taking a running start and swinging as hard as he could before the vine snapped beneath him. The consequences were dire, with the kid plummeting into the thorn bushes below. To us, it seemed like he had fallen into a vortex of spinning blades, but in reality, he was simply stuck among the thorns, his cries for help muffled by the bushy undergrowth.

My brother and I were shocked and terrified by what we had just witnessed. We quickly decided to bury the saw, effectively hiding the evidence of our little "experiment." We didn't want anyone else to know about our near-miss with disaster, so we made sure to cover up any signs of what happened that fateful day.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of childhood impulsiveness. It's easy to get caught up in the thrill of exploring the unknown, but sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution. The bearing of the saw is a concerning instinct that can lead to devastating consequences if not checked. Thankfully, my brother and I learned a valuable lesson from this experience, one that has stayed with us to this day.

A Similar Incident: A Near-Drowning Experience

As we grew older, my brother and I continued to test our limits in various ways. One particular incident stands out as a prime example of my reckless behavior, which ultimately led to a near-drowning experience.

My brother and I were staying over at my mom's apartment, which had a large lake in front of it. The middle of winter had set in, and the lake was partially frozen. We decided to test its strength by standing on the ice, taking small steps closer and closer until we reached the center. Another kid happened upon us, asking if it was safe to play near the hole in the center. We reassured him that it was fine, but what he didn't know was that the ice was actually quite thin.

The kid took a step forward, and before I could react, he fell through the ice, disappearing beneath the surface of the water. My brother and I were shocked, but we did nothing to help him. Instead, we stood frozen in fear, watching as our friend struggled to stay afloat. Miraculously, he managed to pull himself out from under the ice, dripping wet and shaken.

The aftermath of this incident was even more alarming. As my brother and I watched from a distance, an old man appeared on his balcony, shaking his head in dismay. He shouted words of warning at us, telling us that we shouldn't have played on the ice in the first place. It was as if he had been watching us all along, waiting for someone to get hurt.

This experience served as another stark reminder of the dangers of childhood recklessness. The thrill of exploration and play can sometimes lead us down a path of destruction, but it's essential to learn from our mistakes and adapt our behavior accordingly.
