The LG Gram 17-Inch Minimalist Desk Setup: A Review of a Portable Powerhouse

Hey guys, it's Austin here, and welcome back to my channel. Today, we're going to be talking about an amazing laptop that I've been using for some time now - the LG Gram 17-inch. This guy is not just any ordinary laptop; it's a portable powerhouse with a host of features that make it perfect for anyone who needs to work on the go.

The first thing that caught my eye when I saw the Gram was its incredibly thin design. Weighing in at less than three pounds, it's one of the lightest laptops out there. And yet, despite its small size, it still manages to pack a punch with its 17-inch display. The panel itself is not just good, but excellent - featuring a full 2560x1600 resolution that provides plenty of screen real estate.

But what really sets the Gram apart from other laptops on the market is its portability. With a weight like this and a battery life of up to 72-watt hours, you can easily take it with you wherever you go. It's perfect for those long travel days or if you just want to work in the park without having to carry around your laptop.

Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning the specs. The Gram features a quad-core i7 processor, 16 gigs of RAM, and a 512-gig SSD - all of which make it plenty capable for everyday use. And then there's the graphics card - an external graphics card, to be exact.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me tell you about the LG Gram first. This laptop is built like a tank; its design and build quality are top-notch. The keyboard is backlit, which is perfect for late-night working sessions or when you're in low-light environments. And while we're on keyboards, our mouse of choice here is the Logitech MX Master - an ergonomic masterpiece that fits perfectly in your hand.

Now, let's talk about some of the other cool features of this laptop. One of my favorites has to be the LIFX Beam. These are these little strips that you can attach and turn into a mini light show. They're fully RGB-addressable, so you can customize them to any color scheme or effect you like.

And finally, we have our retro steampunk lamp. Now, I know what you're thinking - "what does this have to do with anything?" Well, the thing is, it's just a really cool desk lamp that adds a bit of personality to your workspace.

So, there you have it folks - the LG Gram 17-inch. It's not just another laptop; it's an experience. Whether you're working on the go or need a reliable computer for everyday use, this guy is sure to impress.

As always, if you liked this review, be sure to check out our second channel, This Is, where Linus and Ken make videos that are almost as good as mine.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- Hey guys, this is Austin.Last time we built an entiresetup inside a backpack,so today we're back herewith a minimalist desk setupfeaturing the one and only LG Gram, and of course, as always, huge shout out to LGfor being awesome enoughto sponsor this video.Unlike last time, today we're usingthe full-sized 17-inch Gram. Now we did briefly check this out at CES,but the idea is that you're gettingall of the benefits of the standard Gram, just with a much, much larger screen. This is a surprisinglythin laptop, though. At less than three pounds,it's less than half the weightof a lot of gaming laptopsI've been taking a look at lately. You see this right now? This is me holding it in one hand.I would not do thatwith a thiccc boi laptop.Don't ask what a thiccc boi laptop is,(laughing) by the way. That means it's properly portable.I mean, you can take yourKen videos on the go.So the laptop has alwayshad a nice display. The Grams have hadusually good 1080p panels, but this guy steps it up toa full 2560x1600 resolution, which not only gives you alot of screen real estate, but importantly you getin that portable package.I know I kind of keep reiterating this, but that's the main reason whyyou would go with somethinglike the 17-inch Gram.It really is the mainreason why this existsover something that's oneof the smaller options. It's just such a unique value proposition. The specs are all very similarto other LG Gram models. This guy has that same72-watt hour batteryfor pretty much all day battery life. You've got the quad-core i7 processor,16 gigs of RAM as well as a 512-gig SSD.And importantly, this guy does havea full Thunderbolt 3 port. Now that's important becauseas you'll be seeing in a second,we can do a lot of stuff with that, but it also enables some additional usagebeyond just purely charging itor using something like USB-C.However, because it hassuch a large display,we also have a lot of functionalityto get real work done.Like Photoshop. And that's real work if you're Ken Bolido. So I asked Ken, could you please give mea cool Photoshop fileto demo the Gram with, and what he does is hegives me a 1.9-gigabyte filewhich apparently is everythumbnail he's ever madeall in one, like, what, how many layers is it?- 90.(heavy sighing)- All right, well, actually, you lied, Ken.There's 83 files here.I'm just gonna start disabling things. What is all under, oh wow, you've got, like, a lotof different things here. What is, oh, that's a This Is thumb, okay.I'm gonna be a little bit fair. This is obviously not theway to make thumbnails, but what this is is apretty good representationof a very heavy Photoshop filethat if you're doing a lot of layersand adjustments and stuffthat something like thiscould totally handle. You know what, I actuallykinda like what I look at here, because this has gotthat big 17-inch screen. Can we just make this the minimal setup?Like, is this just it?Like, the end?Is that minimal enough?Fine.(sighing) Let's goactually do the real setup. So this is what Ken and Ihave cooked up for the setup. It looks pretty clean, but there is some pretty cool stuff here.First of all is the monitor. This is the brand-new LG 5K UltraWide. Now to be fair, with a 17-inch screen, you don't really need an extra display. However, because we havethe desk space for it,I feel like it's always nice to havea little bit of extra screen real estate. The panel itself is top-notch.With a 5120x2160 resolution, not only is it a 21:9 UltraWide, but almost more importantly than that,it is a very accurate display. So not only do you have thefull DCI-P3 color space, but it also supports HDR 600,which is really important becausewhen you're working with stufflike photo and video editing, you want your screen toactually look color-accurate,and that's something you definitely get, albeit at a little bitof a price. (laughing)it has HDMI as well as DisplayPort, but right now we're taking advantageof the Thunderbolt port. Now this is really nicebecause with that single cable, the Gram not only display a 5K output, but we also have a couple ofextra USB ports on the monitorand it has a full 85watts of power delivery, which is more than enough for the Gramas well as most otherfairly powerful laptops. What really pushes it over the topis the graphics card. This is the AORUS RTX 2070 gaming box. We've got a ton of use outof the older RX 580 eGPUs.What's cool about this is that of courseit is an external graphics card,it supports Thunderbolt3, but the best part is,it now has those sweet, sweet RTX graphics.Again, with a single Thunderbolt cable,we are powering the Gram, but instead this timewe're running it directlyto our external GPUwhich is then going out viaDisplayPort to our monitor. And not only is this giving usa ton of extra graphics horsepower, but it also enables somefun new things, like gaming.I guess like getting realwork done, but, uh, gaming! So while we should be working,if you want to, say, I don't know, play a game or two like Apex,it actually is totally playable here. Now of course that isbecause we have Thunderboltand the RTX 2070, I'm running this way,but (laughing) playingat the full native resof the monitor, 2560x1600,mostly on Medium settings,we're actually getting a good, like, 50 frames per second, and that's on the internal display. We'll actually be a little bit higherif we were, say, usingan external monitor.Dude, Thunderbolt's the best, man.I mean, sure, of course you can use thisto be productive and get work done,or you can play games. For the keyboard, I like usingthe one built into the Gram. Not only does it have a nicefeel, but it also is backlit. On the mouse side of things, though,we have the Logitech MX Master. This is the go-to mouse fora lot of people, though. Not only does it support Bluetoothas well as connecting via USB dongle, but on top of that you'vegot a ton of extra functionslike some cool extra buttons, and it is a very ergonomic mouse. We also picked out thislittle retro steampunk lamp,as well as we have our Nixie tube clockthat we unboxed on anepisode of Mystery Techa little while ago,but mostly the coolestpart of this whole setupis the LIFX Beam, and these are a bunch of strip thingsthat you can attach. They're all magnet, actually, are they magnetic?- Yes.- I dunno, I just think they look cool. They're fully RGB-addressable.One of the nice things isyou can kind of do themin any kind of orientation. They come with the little corner piecesso you can kind of build alittle bit of a setup here, although I think the L with the monitor,I think it looks nice. You be the judge, did Kenget these on straight? So that is our minimalist setup. As always, links to everythingincluding the LG Gramwill be in the description, and since you're bored onYouTube right now anyway, why don't you go check outour second channel, This Is.Not only do I make videosover there every Monday, but Linus and Ken havealso made videos on it,and they're much better than mine.Although I probablyshouldn't say that on camera. They're almost as good as mine.
