Our Opel Ar-15 Pro Hands-on Review: A Premium Smartphone Experience
The Oppo Ar-15 and Ar-15 Pro are two variants of the same smartphone, with the main differences being on the inside. While they look alike, there are several key upgrades that set them apart from each other. The Ar-15 Pro is officially marketed as a premium variant, offering a more luxurious feel than its regular counterpart.
The design of the Oppo Ar-15 Pro features a glossy back, replacing the traditional metal body found in some previous models. This gives the phone a sleek and modern look, with options for four colors: Infinity Black, Ruby Red, Rouge Red Frost, and White Nebula Purple. The latter has a subtle gradient effect that adds to its premium appeal.
One of the standout features of the Ar-15 Pro is its display. While it's not larger than some other flagships, its form factor remains relatively compact, making it easy to carry around. However, this is where things get interesting - the phone features a notch at the top, housing the selfie camera, earpiece, and proximity sensor. This design choice may polarize users, but it does provide an additional screen real estate for the front-facing camera.
The display on the Oppo Ar-15 Pro also boasts some impressive specs, including a higher refresh rate than its predecessor. However, one notable aspect is that videos played by default don't fill the entire screen - if you choose to do so, you'll need to pinch to zoom in. The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, which may take some getting used to for those who prefer it on the front.
In terms of camera capabilities, both the Ar-15 and Ar-15 Pro feature AI-driven enhancements, including a beauty mode that can enhance facial features and reduce blemishes. The phone's AI beauty mode is also available in video recording mode, allowing users to add filters and effects to their videos. There are also built-in stickers available on the camera app for both front and rear cameras.
The main cameras on the Ar-15 Pro have undergone some notable upgrades compared to its predecessor. When it comes to portrait mode, there isn't a significant difference between the two phones - both perform admirably in cutting out the subject from a busy background. However, when it comes to HDR support, the Ar-15 Pro's capabilities are slightly diminished.
The phone's performance is powered by a Media Tech processor, with Android Oreo as its base operating system. The post-color OS 5.0 adds a host of new features, including gestures and a smarter album that helps organize photos based on people, location, or keywords. There's also a multitasking mode available, which allows users to launch two apps in both portrait and landscape modes.
Overall, the Oppo Ar-15 Pro is an attractive option for those looking for a premium smartphone experience. While it has its drawbacks - such as the notch and slightly diminished camera capabilities compared to other flagships - the phone's sleek design, impressive display, and AI-driven features make it worth considering for selfie enthusiasts. However, it's essential to note that the international version of this phone is still pending availability.
The Oppo Ar-15 Pro's AI features are still a bit rocky, and we're curious to see if they'll improve in time for shipping. Nevertheless, if you're in the market for a smartphone that looks and feels good in the hands, the Ar-15 Pro is definitely worth considering.
