Amazon just jumped into the streaming media player Market with its first product called Amazon Fire TV well we just got the Fire TV in our labs and we're starting to do some testing on it so what is the Amazon Fire TV Amazon Fire TV is a tiny streaming set top box that'll give you access to a lot of streaming services including Netflix Hulu Plus and of course Amazon video and Amazon Prime but at $99 it's at the higher end of the market for these kinds of devices Chris you've had a chance to play around with us in our Labs so what does Amazon really bring to the table well first it has one of the fastest processing speeds we've seen which means that not only is the navigation through the menus very smooth but also the apps and videos load quickly especially on Amazon videos Jennifer Lawrence it also has a voice search which is a lot easier to use than that clunky virtual keyboard that you see all you have to do is hit a button and say what you want to watch so Chris I hear there's something for gamers as well it's not available quite yet but they will be rolling out a more advanced gaming platform but unfortunately to play these more advanced games you're going to have to go out and purchase an optional gaming controller which the Amazon one is like $40 you know as a parent one of the things that I liked is that they're rolling out this whole uh kids area called free time and one of the cool things is that they have actually more extensive parental controls and the kids can't leave that area unless they get a password so how does Amazon Fire TV compare it to some of the other streaming media players out there the two biggest are Apple TV and Roku 3 Apple's always made the most sense if you live in Apple's world and have lots of content in iTunes roku's really been great because it has tons of content we think that Amazon Fire TV probably makes the most sense for those who are already using some of the Amazon Services especially the video services like instant video and Amazon Prime and we also found that some of the unique features of the Amazon Fire do work best when you're streaming Amazon content so how can I get my hands on an Amazon Fire TV that's actually pretty easy just go up to amazon.com and it's prominently featured there if you're looking for a player make sure you visit all of our streaming media player ratings at consumerreports.org
