The TRUTH About The Mac Studio (M1 Ultra)

The Mac Studio with the Studio Display is a compelling combination that makes sense for those invested in the Apple ecosystem. This 27-inch 5K retina display comes with 600 nits of brightness, a P3 wide color gamut, and anti-reflective coating, making it an excellent option for graphics professionals and content creators.

Intentionally, Apple has chosen to pair the Studio Display with the Mac Studio, which is a sleek and powerful computer that boasts impressive performance. The display itself looks great, with uniform bezels and a premium aluminum build that complements the Mac Studio's design. One of the standout features of this display is the A13 Bionic chip built-in, which also powers the 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with Center Stage technology.

Center Stage is a feature that Apple has introduced across its iPad line, and it's great for video calls. The camera will track you when you move from side to side, so you don't necessarily have to stay static. This feature, combined with the display's excellent speakers, makes this monitor an ideal choice for those who want a seamless experience.

The Studio Display comes with three USB-C ports and one Thunderbolt port, which can be used to charge your MacBook Pro 14-inch using fast charging while it's connected to the display. If you have multiple Studio Displays, you can connect up to three of them to your MacBook Pro for a powerful setup. The polishing cloth that comes with the monitor is also a nice touch, as it sells for around $19.

One thing that would be great to see is an alternative color option for the Studio Display - specifically black, which is available on other Apple products such as the Magic Mouse and Trackpad. However, overall, this display is an excellent choice for those invested in the Apple ecosystem. It's not the cheapest option, but it comes with a lot of value, especially when paired with the Mac Studio.

In terms of performance, the M1 Max will likely be more than sufficient for most users, which is what makes the M1 Ultras in the Mac Studio so compelling - they offer incredibly powerful performance at an affordable price. Whether you're a professional graphics artist or just someone who wants to get into content creation, this display and computer combination is definitely worth considering.

To use the Studio Display with your MacBook Pro, you'll need to connect it using one of the USB-C ports. This display also comes with a stand, which has a 30-degree tilt, but if you want an adjustable height stand, that will cost an extra $400. There's also a VESA mount adapter option available for those who want more flexibility when mounting their display.

The Studio Display is priced at $1,500, but it's worth noting that you can pay up to $250 or more if you want the nano-texture glass, which minimizes glare and gives the display an even more premium feel. The display itself looks fantastic, with a very clean design that complements the Mac Studio nicely.

Overall, this is a really nice display, and it's clear that Apple has put a lot of thought into its design and features. While there are certainly other monitor options available at lower prices, this display comes with a lot of value, especially when paired with the Mac Studio and the M1 Max processor.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en(light music)- What's up guys, Saf here on SuperSaf TV.And in the studio,we have the Mac Studio aswell as the Studio Display. That's a lot of studios. But anyway, I've hadthese for about a week nowand my Mac Studioconfiguration is the M1 Ultrawith a 64-core GPU, 128gigabytes of unified memory, and a four terabyte SSD.And the price for this configurationis around 6,800 pounds or dollars, just to give you some context. Now, in terms of my personal workflowI generally use a desktop PCas well as my MacBook Pro.So the comparisons for performancethat I'm going to be doing inthis video will be to those. Now we will be talkingabout the Studio Displaya little bit later in this video, but initial let's talkabout the Mac Studio. So for the design,it looks very much likea Mac mini stretched. You could stack, I'd say, maybe two and a half, three Mac minis togetherto get to the size of this. But regardless, it isstill really compact.I mean, it fits comfortablyunderneath the Studio Display.Much, much smallercompared to pretty muchany other desktop PCthat's going to havesomewhat similar performance. Now this doesn't mean thatit's not user expandablebut I do like this minimal design.I mean, it only comes in a silver.I would've liked to havehad black, of course. And at the bottom, thereis the perforated designthat pulls in air from the bottomwhich goes through a double sided blowerand then exhaust out through the back. Now, one thing to note isthat the M1 Max Mac Studiodoes weigh about one kgless than the M1 Ultra. And although the thermalarchitecture is the same,it's actually the coolingbody that is different. Now, I'm not somebodywho's going to open this upto kind of see exactly what's different, but yes, the M1 Ultra MacStudio does weigh a bit more.I'm not sure that's really going to matterbecause it's going to besitting on your desk anyway. Now let's talk about the portsbecause I'm really happywith the port selectionthat we have here on the Mac Studio. So we've got four Thunderbolt 4 ports, one 10 gigabit ethernetports which is as standard. Then we have the power port. Now, this is just a standard power port,it's not magnetical, likewe have on the iMacs. There's two USB type ports, one HDMI 2.0, not 2.1,as well as one pro 3.5millimeter headphone Jack.So that's plenty of ports the backwhich I'm very happy with. But the thing that really surprised meand I didn't think Apple was going to do,was include some IO at the front too.So on the M1 Max versionyou'll get two USB type-C portswith speeds of up to 10 gigabits a second, but on the M1 Ultra versionyou'll get two additionalThunderbolt 4 portswith up to 40 gigabits are second speeds. As well as that, we have an SD card slot. This is amazing.I love the new approachthat Apple is taking. We've got the SD card slotback on the MacBook Pro.We've got it here at thefront on the Mac Studio. And it really seems like Appleis taking feedback on boardand bringing studio professionalswhat they really want. Now you can connect upto four Pro Display XDRplus a 4K TV to the Mac Studio.I'm not sure why anybodywould want to do that, but hey, if you do that, that is available there. Now let's talk about performance. So I've been using the M1Max chip on my MacBook Profor the past few months, andit's been absolutely awesome. It pretty much handlesanything that I throw at it.The M1 Ultra is pretty muchtwo M1 Maxs fused together. So Apple uses die to dieinterconnect technologywhich they call UltraFusion. And as far as software is concerned, the M1 Ultra will stillappear as a single SoC.So it's going to be abletake full advantage of it.Time for some benchmarks. Now, I've mostly compared thisto my M1 Max powered MacBook Proto really give us anidea of the differencesbetween the M1 Max and the M1 Ultra. And on Geekbench 5, as expected, the single core score isroughly about the same. But when it comes to the multi core score, the M1 Ultra with the studioscores almost double thatof the MacBook Pro with the M1 Max.with OpenCL on Geekbench 5,we've got around a 1.4 times higher score. And on Cinebench, again,we have a very similar single core scorebut the multi-core score isalmost double with the M1 Ultra. And with 3DMark Wild Life Extremeyou've got around a1.7 times higher score. So those are the benchmarks, which are very impressive, but what does that translateinto real world performance? So personally speaking, Igenerally use Adobe Premier Proand I shoot in 4K on my Sony a7S III.I tend to have a multi camera set upwith some simple color gradingas well as some motion graphics.I uploaded a videoyesterday of the iPad Air.If you've not seen it yetyou can check it out after this video.I'll link it in the cardsand down in the description. But that's roughly a nine minute video. And exporting that on myM1 Max powered MacBook Pro,this took a total of two minutesand 34 seconds to export, which was pretty fast.On the M1 Ultra Mac Studio,it took a total of...Drum roll.(drums rumbling)Two minutes and 31 seconds.(record scratching)Okay. So it shaved off three seconds, which is more of a testamentto how good the M1 Max is really, because if we do comparethis to my desktop PCwhich has the AMD Ryzen 9 3950Xas well as the GeForce RTX 3070,that actually took fiveminutes and 33 seconds, more than double the time. But then I did try todo some further testsand I tried to export 500raw 24 megapixel imageswith some edits in Lightroom, and on my MacBook Pro thistook just under six minuteswhereas on the Mac Studio ittook just over three minutes. So, almost half the time. That is very impressive. Now, clearly it seems that for my workflowthe M1 Max is more than enough. And I think that's goingto be the case for people. However, if you are somebodywho's doing lots of 3D animation, tasks that require machine learning, then I really do think you'llappreciate the M1 Ultra.I mean, you can have up to 18streams of 8K ProRes video. On the M1 Max you'll beable to do nine streams, which is still quite a lot.The other thing that Ialso noticed in my usageis just how silent this is,even when you are exporting videoor going through some intensive timelines. And the Mac Studio alsoconsumes less powercompared to other desktop PCs.In the keynote, Apple mentionedthat the Mac Studio consumes1000 kilowatt-hours less energythan a high end desktop over a year. Now I've personally not beenable to test this as such, but with energy prices soaringI'm sure people aregoing to appreciate this.Right, now let's talk aboutthe price for the Mac Studio. So the M1 Max starts at around2,000 pounds or dollars. The M1 Ultra versionstarts at double the price,so around 4,000 pound or $4,000.Now as mentioned, I think most people, and probably 90, 95% of thepeople watching this videowill be more than happywith the M1 Max Mac Studio. But for those of you who have the moneyand want the absolute ultra performance, then the M1 Ultra powered MacStudio is absolutely insane. Now, if you asked me,the configuration I wouldgo for would be the M1 Max.I'd pay 200 pounds extrato go for the 32-core GPU.32 gigabytes of unifiedmemory is generally okay, but I would probablygo for the 64 gigabytesof unified memory just to future proof. And I'd personally payfor the two terabytes storage version. And that comes to a totalof around 3,200 pounds. That's personally theconfiguration I would go for.Let me know which oneyou might be going for. Now, let's talk about the Studio Display, which goes really nicelywith the Mac Studio.Intentionally, of course. So this is a 27 inch 5K retina displaywith 600 knits of brightness,a P3 wide color gamut, andanti-reflective coating. And this is priced at 1,500 pounds, but you can pay 250 pounds or moreif you want the nano texture glasswhich is going to minimize glare. It does come with this stand, as standard. This has a 30 degree tilt, but if you do want theheight adjustable standthat's going to cost an extra 400 pounds. Now, it looks like a very good standbut 400 pounds is a lot of money. And you can also get it witha vesa mount adapter option. Now, this is actuallya really nice display. We've got uniform bezels, and I know a lot of people aregoing to say in the commentsthat you can get really gooddisplays at much lower prices.Personally speaking, on my day-to-dayI use my 38 inch LG ultra wide.I prefer the ultra wide format, especially for my workflow. But here's the thing, the Studio Display fits seen really wellwith the Apple family. It's got the perforated designand we've got an aluminum build, which makes this quite premium. Most monitors that I've testeddo generally have a plastic build. But what really makes this uniqueis that it has the A13Bionic chip built in.The A13 Bionic chip is whatwe had on the iPhone 11.And this it to have a 12megapixel ultra wide camerawith Center Stage. So Center Stage is something that we haveacross the iPad line, and it's great for video calls. And it's going to track youwhen you move from side to side,so you don't necessarilyhave to stay static. Now, again, there's lots ofweb cam options availablethat you can buy inaddition with your monitor, but this integrated packageis really what I thinkwill make the Studio Displaya compelling option for many.It also has a three mic arraywith a six speaker sound systemthat supports spatial audio. You've got four force-canceling woofersand two high performance tweeters. And in my opinion, thesesound absolutely great. Some of the best speakers thatI've heard on any monitor.Sure, you can get some external speakerswhich will be louderand give you more bass. But in this minimal setupthese speakers are ideal. At the back we've got three USB-C ports,as well as one Thunderbolt portwhich has 96 Watts of host charging. So you can just connect yourMacBook to the Studio Displaywith the one cable, which comesincluded and it's braided. You also do get the polishing clothwhich sells for around 19 pounds or $19.So, hey, that's a bonus. But what's great about thisis if you do have the MacBook Pro 14 inch, you're actually going tobe able to fast charge thatwhile it's connectedto this Studio Display. You can also connect three Studio Displaysto your MacBook Pro if that'ssomething that you'd want to do.But overall, I think thisis an excellent displayand yes, there are lots ofother monitor options out therewhich you'll find for a lot less as well.I just think that the StudioDisplay goes really nicelywith the Mac Studio setup. The one thing that I would'veliked of course, again,is if it came in black, especially now that wehave the black magic mouseas well as the black track pad,and the magic keyboardwith the black keys. But anyway, that is the Mac Studiowith the Studio Displayin the SuperSaf studio.I got to say, I'm veryimpressed with the Mac Studioand just the performancewith Apple Silicon.I mean, we're still goingto be getting a Mac Pro.I wonder what they'regoing to do with that.Maybe they're going tocombine two M1 Ultrasinto an M1 Ultra Max orsomething, I don't know, but that's something that'sgoing to be completely overkillfor somebody like myself. As mentioned, I thinkthe M1 Max will be finefor most people. That's what I think anyway. What do you guys think?Do drop me a comment below.Let me know your thoughts.I hope you enjoyed thisvideo and found it useful. If you did, then do smashthat like button for me.I'm going to
