My Ferrari F355 Burned To The Ground 2 Years Ago. Here's How Bad The Damage Actually Is
**A New Chapter for a Classic Car: The Ultimate Dream Build**
The process of taking an engine apart to make way for a new power plant is never easy, but when it comes to a classic car like this Mazda RX-7, every detail matters. In this case, the owner decided to take out everything in the engine bay to create space for a sequential Mendiola S4 5-speed transmission and a custom Kennedy clutch. This ambitious project aims to produce over 700 horsepower at the wheels, more than double what the car made stock.
**The Challenge of Fitting a New Power Plant**
The Mazda RX-7's engine bay is notorious for being tight, with the previous owner's Ferrari engine taking up most of the space. However, this new setup requires a different configuration to accommodate the sequential transmission and custom clutch. The owner took measurements to ensure a proper fit, but 10 inches make all the difference, as evidenced by the comparison with the Ferrari engine. To overcome this challenge, the axles were removed, and a piece of tape was used to mark the axle center line. This allowed the owner to test-fit the new power plant in the engine bay, making adjustments as needed.
**The Fit is Promising**
To everyone's surprise, the engine and transmission fit very nicely between each other, allowing for the removal of the subframe like Ferrari intended. However, there are a few areas that require modification, including the bulkhead and fuel tank location. The owner plans to relocate the fuel tank, possibly in the passenger side of the car. The front snout of the rotary engine is another area where modifications will be necessary, with the pulley being removed and relocated.
**A Potential Breakthrough: Ferrari Axles**
In a surprising twist, the owner discovered that the Ferrari axles could fit onto the new transmission without needing to be modified. This means that the cost and complexity of sourcing custom-made axles are eliminated, making the project more feasible. However, the axle-to-axle distance is still 2 inches shorter than the original transmission, requiring a spacer to ensure proper clearance.
**The Owner's Excitement**
Despite the challenges, the owner is thrilled with the progress made so far. The fit of the engine and transmission is promising, and the modifications are starting to take shape. The relocation of the alternator and other components is underway, allowing for more headroom in the engine bay. The owner is excited to try out the new axles on the transmission, which could potentially become a game-changer for this project.
**A New Era for This Classic Car**
As the build progresses, it's clear that this car will no longer be stock. The owner has big plans for this project, and we can't wait to see what they have in store. In the next episode, we'll delve into the ultimate dream build for this Mazda RX-7, which promises to be an exciting journey. For now, let's give a big thank you to our sponsor Omaze, who are always supporting car enthusiasts like us.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhow's it going guys my name is tavaresh and today i'm going to show you exactly what happens to a car when it's on fire yeah buying this car might not have been such a great idea so if you guys are new to my channel thank you so much for watching i really hope you enjoy it and consider subscribing if these are the kinds of things you like to see i'm super excited today because this is a car i haven't touched in a very very long time if you're new this is a 1995 ferrari f-355 spyder at least it used to be before this happened i got this car for the princely sum of 19 000 and while that does sound like a lot for what's not a lot of car this i think has a lot of promise and a lot of potential because i don't see cars for what they are obviously i see cars for what they could be and this project i think is going to be one of my most ambitious one of my most interesting and one of my most uh let's say controversial because i made the decision to put a mazda rotary engine into this car come on yes yes we have a three round that decision was made because well i had a engine here and i felt like it needed to go into a car and this is a car that i had so boom that's that's how it works now this project is gonna require a lot of work for me in the hundreds maybe thousands of hours it's gonna require tuning it's gonna require a body shop an interior shop and a lot of other custom touches now with all that work in front of me people always ask me whenever i do these projects why don't i just get a ferrari that doesn't need this much work where is the fun in that however i do see that point i mean there really is something about getting a brand new car that you don't have to do anything on and that just works right out of the box thankfully today's sponsor omaze gives you the chance to get your very own brand new ferrari i sort of wish i had one of those right now if this is your first time on the internet and you haven't heard of omaze it's an awesome organization that gives you the chance to win your dream car or dream experience while at the same time supporting great causes donate 10 bucks and you're entered for the chance to win lusso plus twenty thousand dollars while supporting an awesome cause at the same time enter at omaze.com wrench that's o m a e wrench go check it out right now so let's begin there are a lot of things that happen when a car is on fire the way this car was this was a major major fire and this car was totaled for a very very good reason so in one of my early episodes on this car i took the engine out and i put a boroscope inside the cylinders to let you guys know what was inside and also if the engine was savable now the engine is more or less savable i will be able to rebuild that however that engine is not going back in this car nothing from that drivetrain is going back in this car and to make sure that i don't have anything original in the back of this car i have to take everything apart now you might be looking at it and saying it's already taken apart and yes that's true but i recorded this after i did it so let's go back in time and i'm going to show you exactly how annoying and dirty you can get by taking apart a car that was on fire okay so now we have a ferrari that is completely taken apart however we're not gonna go into there just yet i wanna show you what it looks like when you take off components from a car that have been really on fire now this is the gas tank this is where all the fire is made everyone the rubber is just burnt to a crisp but you guys already knew this what you might not know is that the fireproofing this material it just flakes off everywhere so whatever happens this has to be replaced if i'm gonna use this fuel tank which i'm actually not this fuel tank is just gonna go in the garbage or whatever i don't think that this is usable anymore because when the fire happened this put a bunch of rubber into the fuel tank and also a bunch of chemicals when the firefighters are putting it out so i wager that there's probably a lot of corrosion inside there one thing i want to really make clear is the fact that stuff like this this is an aluminum pipe these can be rendered completely useless even though they look okay because this fire was hot enough that it actually melted aluminum in a lot of cases and these aluminum pipes they get very brittle if they're exposed to high heat and this was definitely exposed to a lot of high heat this is right in the zone where the fire was the hottest and you can see this is all soot this is not exactly well it is painted like this but the soot is just all over the place it sucks because this is a form-fitted piece and i may be able to reuse this but i i really wouldn't want to just because this gets so brittle and putting this under pressure this might develop leaks in the future so we're gonna put that to the side so we have a bunch of different types of metals this is aluminum tank this is aluminum pipe but we also have fiberglass sections these are well for the air box and also the radiators and the heat exchangers that go back here the air inlet right here this is obviously past saving so i'm not sure if i'm gonna reuse this uh the fiberglass is actually in okay shape it's just very very dirty um it did have a little bit of damage over here and on the bottom but other than that the fiberglass actually holds up pretty well this didn't get too hot what did get hot however is this this is the oil cooler and these are the oil pipes they go to the dry sump system and what's really interesting is that these are stainless steel pipes and there's a inner rubber section and the rubber just started coming out of that that is that is just insane so that got really really hot and i don't even want to think what it did to the insides of this you can see that the fan has melted a little bit this fan even if it spins let's see if it spins okay the fan spins a little bit but it's a little bit grungy so what happens in the motors or any electrical motor for that matter is that the internals kind of expand and they can heat seize and if anything is introduced into the motor whether it be heat or things to put out a fire those can corrode so this motor is no good now one of the things that people do to these cars to the ferrari f355s as they replace the fans because the stock fans aren't very good but i'm thinking that i have to replace this entire thing because well i don't trust this anymore this is like a big piece of cast aluminum but this is what i'm worried about all the way down there yeah just it's like flaking off it's really just disgusting so coming to the actual radiator and you see another huge huge problem and that's the fact that radiators well at least the end tanks are made of plastic and plastic doesn't do well in fires yeah that's uh that's what's left of the radiator and it's all over so this is beyond saving even though the fins look pretty much okay maybe it's possible to put different end tanks on there i really wouldn't want to do anything with this even though it is a ferrari part this is still probably very expensive but now comes the damage that i think you guys really were interested in and this is where you can see the the worst parts of it this was the wiring harness and right now it is just like a hard molten mess and you can see exactly how hot the fire got it not only melted the insulation on every single wire but it allowed the copper wire to become this blue oxidized mess so one thing that i do see people doing is that if they have a car that has some sort of fire like an electrical fire or wiring harness fire they just cut out the piece that is offending like i mean this one is a little a little worse for the wear but let's say you just cut this entire piece out and then you have what looks like some good wiring on the other end now i don't think it's going to be that easy because if you just put new wires on you might have problems with resistance and resistance is basically corrosion somewhere down this wire it could be internally that you don't see and it allows the voltage to drop it allows the uh amperage to be too high you can be popping fuses there's a lot of weirdness that can come with repairing a harness like this instead of just replacing it i would never ever ever try to repair something like this so the wiring is just a complete hot garbage mess and that goes the same for this the fuel filter and the fuel hoses these are actually very high quality hoses and they're not supposed to have this much flex in them but the fact is they just have yeah they're completely destroyed so everything here would have to be redone now i believe one of these is actually the culprit of the fire uh one of these did rub through on some of the bodywork and fuel just sprayed everywhere onto the hot exhaust manifold and boom you have this monstrosity oh boy the ecu's in the back of the car they might be okay maybe one of them this has two ecu's apparently controlling a v8 was a bridge too far for ferrari but this one's a little crispy i'm not sure if the internals are okay but you know put it on craigslist no tire kickers i know what i got all right let's take a look at this engine bay which looks pretty sorry for itself i do like the fact that everything here can potentially be sandblasted and brought back if i do some coding or coloring i'm not sure what color i want this to be not sure what color the car is gonna be i'm not even sure what body mods i'm gonna do this car had some sort of suspension that you can adjust automatically and uh these are a little worse for the wear i feel like this is going to snap off but i feel like i'm also going to destroy my hand if i do that now there are a few good things about this engine bay and it's the fact that the fire didn't really do anything to the steel substructure you can see right here that some of the uh i guess fire proofing or just coating has come off but most of it's still on there and most of the coating over here is still on there as well i took this off myself so the fiberglass underneath is all okay the metal itself is very intact and it's all okay everything seems to be pretty solid and this is a very scientific test of me just knocking on it let's just uh just put a pin in that one the brakes are in great shape just just awesome now i am kind of kidding but they're not in horrible shape these are still usable uh these rotors might be a little are they warped no they don't seem to be warped the calipers are okay even the lines at least this part of the line is okay so the suspension and everything could still be usable uh without any modification but i would like to change out that suspension just because the tops are just completely past it the bushings uh have seen better days so they're all cracked and broken but that could have honestly been before the fire now these things are called brake lines these things right here that's a brake line that needs to be replaced from the front to the back of the car and that is non-negotiable even though they look sort of kind of okay i wouldn't gamble with a safety issue like that so they're going to get replaced front to back as well as some of the coolant lines and definitely all the fuel lines so the reason why i took out everything in this engine bay is because i needed as much space as possible in order to fit this this is a three rotor mazda 20b wankel rotary engine with a sequential mendiola s4 5-speed transmission with a custom kennedy clutch this is gonna be a awesome little power plant this should make north of 700 horsepower at the wheels which is about double actually more than double of what this car made stock i do need to test fit this and i'm not sure that this is actually going to fit in this car because the last time i did some measurements this was about 10 inches longer than the ferrari engine and believe you me 10 inches makes a big difference so i have taken out the axles but i put a little piece of tape where the axle center line is that way i can line up that center line with the axles over there so i'm just gonna slide this into this engine bay and we're gonna see what we have to cut and maybe it'll all bolt up it's not gonna bolt up well okay that's installed let's start her up there are a few very very promising things number one we have this and we also have that and those are completely removable bars and as you can see this engine and transmission they fit very nicely between them which means that instead of taking off this whole subframe like ferrari intended we can actually bring the engine out from the bottom the issue is that over there it kind of hits the bulkhead over there so that's gonna need to be cut like right there and right there so we'll have to clear into that and before we can do that we have to kind of box this out the fuel tank lives here so we're gonna have to relocate that and i'm not sure where else we can put it maybe over there somewhere but this is definitely not gonna have a tank that was as big but i don't really think it matters now let's come to the front and see how much space we have so here is the front snout of the rotary now usually this would be called a crank pulley but the rotary doesn't have a crank so i think it's the eccentric shaft and if you look up it actually fits very very nicely now i will be taking off the pulley i will be relocating the alternator i think the alternator has to be relocated over here to the side that way we get a lot more headroom and i mean i'm straight on here and you can see that this is almost almost made for it and coming back you can see that the motor mount here if i just go straight up the motor mount almost lines up with the motor mount on the ferrari this is this is looking very very good but i want to try something that i'm very excited about so this is one of the axles and i sort of think that they might be able to go on to our new transmission but i haven't tried it yet so you guys will be the first to see if this actually does work these are ferrari axles they are not specially made for the mendiola five speed and oh no that cannot be real oh it absolutely lines up all right let's try this again see the holes line up there oh my goodness oh that is perfect so i'm not gonna need new axles even though these ones might break because they're not rated for 700 million horsepower okay coming back to reality a little bit i did measure the axle to axle distance and on the ferrari it's actually two inches more than it is on that transmission so unfortunately i am gonna have to make a spacer but i'm not gonna need new axles and that means that if i break these axles then i can potentially just get new ferrari ones or just have some made in this specification so that's gonna be a lot easier for me now i am super super super excited about getting this project off getting there we go getting this project off the ground and it's it's been a long time coming i actually did buy this car many many months ago if not years ago and i never knew what to do with it but i think i'm honing in on my ultimate dream build for this project and no it is not going to be stock and i have a really good
