The Ultimate Test Drive: Taking the Jaguar XJ Super Sport to its Limit
As I stepped into the Jaguar XJ Super Sport, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. This is the most expensive and powerful version of Jaguar's Ultra Posh limo, and it's just been made faster than ever for a mere £3,700. To truly experience its capabilities, I decided to take it on an epic road test, starting deep inside a Scottish mountain beneath an 8.5 billion L reservoir that feeds a hydroelectric power station.
The reason for my subterranean start point was the best place on Earth to take in the XJ's growling exhaust. As I made my way through the 1 km access tunnel, I felt like I was on the set of a sci-fi film – dark, wet, and damp, with sheer rock formations on either side that would be intimidating for anyone who's claustrophobic, which unfortunately includes me. However, as a rare exception was granted to allow petrol cars down here, I knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.
As I emerged from the tunnel, the sudden change in atmosphere was invigorating. The windows were rolled down, and the wind rushed past my ears, creating a thrilling sensation that left me feeling exhilarated and alive. With the speed pack fitted, which boosts the car's top end to a hair-raising 174 mph, I knew this was going to be an unforgettable experience.
The next leg of our journey took us to the highest road in the UK – a truly breathtaking 670 M stretch further into the clouds than the tunnel. As we climbed higher, the view just opened out to stunning scenery on my right, with crystal-clear waters reflecting the mirror image of the mountains above. This was indeed fantastic fun, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was more wafting along rather than really being in the action.
Despite the initial excitement, it wasn't until we reached the Ken Gores National Park just a few miles away from my final destination that things truly began to come alive. The scenery around us was one of the most beautiful and picturesque journeys I've ever done – comfortable, yet thrilling all at once. However, as much as I had expected drama and excitement, it wasn't quite what I got.
The 500 horsepower limo, which I had been hoping would deliver a more thrilling experience, didn't quite live up to my expectations on the open road. It was indeed comfortable, but lacked that extra edge that I had anticipated. Perhaps, I thought, the car will come alive on the final stint – a 500 M hike up some of the best roads in Europe.
As we climbed higher and the road opened out, the scenery became even more breathtaking. The sense of awe and wonder was palpable as I took in the sheer magnitude of what we were driving through. And then, suddenly, we reached our destination on this stretch of the A93, just a few miles south of Brar – 670 M above sea level, making it the highest public road in Britain.
It was time to celebrate this incredible achievement with a flag planted proudly on the tarmac, and what better way to cap off an epic drive than by putting the pedal down through the final corner? The rush of adrenaline was pure car porn – I mean, look at this; it's absolutely exquisite. Feeling very special indeed, I couldn't help but think that the XJ Super Sport truly lived up to its reputation as the most expensive and powerful version of Jaguar's Ultra Posh limo.
