"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enokay Google how do you make good YouTube videos that's not what I thought at all my name's Tom and I'm the tech Chap and this is my review of this LG gatr so okay Google is it any good so if we start by taking a look at the design and overall Aesthetics of the watch we have a fully circular 1.3 in 320x 320 ped display this is protect by Grilla Glass 3 and surrounded by a diver style bezel around the edge this is all encased within a metal stainless steel and aluminium body uh for the wrist wrap we have Cal skin leather that sounds pretty good sounds pretty premium but is in fact fairly low quality and actually probably one of the cheapest feeling and sounding components of the build uh it's a shame it just let down the hole watch a little bit but they can be changed out it's a fairly standard 22 mm wrist strap so you can change out for third party uh Vis straps including metal ones if you want a slightly more premium look and feel but it's not too bad it's fairly comfortable it doesn't uh pull your hair out like metal link wrist straps often do and there's enough holes here for pretty much any wrist size so you don't have to worry about a one siiz fitall issue here 9.7 mm thick it does feel quite bulky and people have commented that on the wrist even though I do have actually quite small wrists it looks a bit big and bulky now surprisingly though this is actually one of the thinnest smart watches you can buy uh this being 9.7 millimeters compared with 10.5 uh for the Pebble Steel uh this is depth we're talking about uh 11.5 millim for the Moto 360 and uh 12.5 MIM for the Samsung Gear S so it is actually one of the thinnest um so when if you would describe that as bulky then well that's still the probably the best you're going to get from a smartwatch at this stage so it's not too bad and um I think you could just argue it it just looks and it does feel like a just a large watch it's nothing particularly out the ordinary and it's probably the least bulk you can actually get for a smartwatch as with all design its appeal is completely subjective on the face of it it's just not quite as premium perhaps as the Moto 360 um with its with its Circa 97% screen to body ratio here we have a good size decent bezel surrounding the screen although many including myself actually prefer this more rugged look and sort of classic diver style bezel design although the screen is smaller here than on the Moto 360 we're looking at 1.3 in here as opposed to 1.56 on the Moto 360 The Wider and taller bezel does mean that it's still quite a big watch overall the body is just as wide as the 360 at 45 mm uh but the overall body here is a bit taller at 54 mm versus the Moto 360's 4 6 so personally I am a big fan of the design I really like it it's not quite perfect but it does look sensible it's not too ostentatious and although some will say the markings on the bezel are unnecessary uh as it can appear to repeat often what's on the screen uh depending on your watch face example here you know you can see a software Dash and then another outside Dash so this will depend on what watch face you use but it's not really a big deal at all um and I can I actually quite like that sometimes when the screen is dimmed as it is at the moment uh it does help perhaps you more easily and more quickly be able to decide for what time it is by these markings the only Hardware button is actually incorporated into a pressable watch Crown here on the right hand side uh it does help make the watch look more traditional and although obviously it doesn't wind but there is a little bit of sideways movement it doesn't do anything uh it's useful as a onoff button and a uh home button so if you can you feel stuck in the menu or submenu somewhere you just want to get out you feel a bit cluster for just click that you will return straight back to your standard watch face it's useful as as I say as an onoff button and if you get and as a home button and I think it's a great idea to incorporate a familiar home button that we're used to with smart devices and our smartphones with a familiar watch feature uh so it's a nice sort of blend of the traditional and the smart here the screen is one of the best on any smart watch it's really bright up to 300 nits I'll show you how just how bright it can get right now if we adjust the brightness and this is actually at the minimum one setting so you can see even even in indoor use one is plenty bright enough and that can go all the way up to six which for the iso I'm using on this camera is too high so we'll lower that back down but you don't have to have any worries about using this outside in or even in the sunlight even though the screen the display is reflective and glossy you have no issue with brightness you can use it wherever in addition to being bright it's also incredibly sharp the 320x 320 resolution uh at 1.3 in uh screen diameter means we have a PPI of 246 which is pretty good not quite the same level as uh perhaps Flagship Smartphones at the moment but still pretty good uh you can actually see the pixels it's not as I say quite the same standard we used to when going from a high-end smartphone you probably will notice it's a little bit more pixelated than you used to but 246 PPI on a smartwatch is still very good and perhaps if you've seen the pebble or Pebble Steel it uh it's definitely a step up from that so it's pretty premium and again the best you're going to get really from a smartwatch at the moment it has really wide viewing angles again you can see although this keeps dimming um you can see uh a little bit of reflection here but uh in general use the viewing angles are very good and uh you can be sort of having a watch to one side and you can just quickly glance it and see the time so you don't have to have it directly in front of your face to use it which is quite nice now this is actually a p LED display and what what that what does that mean well it's a polymer organic light emitting diode essentially means it's a plastic rather than a glass display it's still protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and retains a glass sounding premium feel that like any normal glass display but being plastic is actually lighter um actually tougher and less likely to scratch and shatter than a glass and also I think for LG it's easier to manufacture so that's what that p means it basically means it's a polymer it's a plastic um but that does that's actually probably a good thing overall and I'm sure they've thought about the pros and cons of that display for watch face and it's one of those things that you're possibly going to scratch and just bang every now and then as you walk into doors or such things like that as I often do so uh it's quite nice not to scratch and not to have to worry about it too much but it is still protected by a outer layer of G Gilla Glass 3 so it's a pretty pretty secure little bit of Kit there and it's not going to break anytime soon at this moment in time I think this is actually the only fully round uninterrupted Smartwatch display as that Motu 360 has that famously awkward black little uh section cut off at the bottom of the screen where it houses a number of sensors so if you really do care about round display and I think it is actually quite important on a watch it does give that a more uh traditional look I I just think just Square watch faces look awful I think they they I think round faces much nicer much more pleasant to look at much more aesthetically pleasing and this being the only fully round Smartwatch uh is definitely a selling point and a key feature of it this is actually a good example of a Twitter notification that's just come up here you can see uh I've been notified that um a few of my followers have retweeted uh Mr Tim Cook which is uh I'm not sure if it's ironic or what the word is but obviously we're reviewing an Android were watch here something that is not compatible with iPhones but we can uh still obviously read Tim Cook's tweet here if we want so actually if we were to scroll across here we could open on the phone if we go again we could block this um if we SL swipe up from where we were uh no actually we're not getting any more information from that that was it it was just telling me that they have retweeted not what the actual tweet was so uh perhaps that's not quite as useful as we thought inside we're looking at a Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz that's actually one that's actually 2 GHz higher than the Moto 360 so we got a slightly beefier processor in here than the competitors uh alongside 512 megab of RAM and 4 GB of storage which obviously is not really expandable uh in terms of other Hardware we includes a heart rate monitor which is on the inside I'll show you in a bit and that will measure your heart rate going through your top of your wrist uh we got a barometer and what they call 9 AIS motion sensor which I think basically includes an accelerometer a gyro and a compass uh and this all pairs to your phone or other accessories like headphones or speakers through Bluetooth 4.0 Le finally it also includes uh IP67 water and dust resistance meaning according to LG you can actually submerge this in one meter of water for up up to 30 minutes although perhaps I wouldn't recommend going swimming with it and I probably wouldn't even wear it in the shower but I wouldn't have a problem wearing it perhaps on a rainy day or if I accidentally spilled a drink over it or something so it's nice to have that it makes it just all a little bit more rugged also in the box is a magnetic charger cable so basically if I take this off I haven't got it plugged in just at the moment but I'll show you how it would work uh if I take the watch off and you see these charging pins here and here we link those up and there's a a there's a little bit of a magnet in there so it does go into it you have to line it up but once it's in it sits like that in its cradle and then you just plug in your standard micro USB phone charger in here into the wall or your laptop now interestingly LG do actually say that you can plug this into a laptop or computer and will charge just as fast as if it were plugged into a wall socket so um you don't have to worry about a slower charge but it either way it does actually take quite a long time to charge it fully my estimate would be about 4 hours roughly to charge it from Z to 100 it does take off a while but again you you're going to be charging overnight probably so it's not um it's not something you'll consider that much but it's not it's certainly not particularly fast so if we talk a little bit more about the performance of it it has a 1.2 GHz uh snapdragon 400 as we discussed uh and that ensures everything runs nice and smoothly pretty much everything you do on it is lag free stutter free silky smooth that's probably thanks to um some quite lengthy animations between bits and pieces but um it all works well you're not going to notice any stutter and um is actually for a relatively first generation device I think we're still in the first generation of smart watches to not have to have any issues with lag or responsiveness problems is pretty good pretty good thing and um shows just how efficient and Powerful the uh Snapdragon processor is it's good to note though that it doesn't actually get particularly hot or even warm in any normal use situation if You' perhaps just finished the software update or you've just been fully charging it the screen may be slightly warm to the touch but it's never a problem it's never anything you feel underneath so you don't have to worry about this heating up or getting too hot or uncomfortable based on normal use one feature I would recommend leaving on if you go to the settings there's an option to always keep the screen on I would say have that on because if you don't well I'll show you what happens if you don't I'll just turn it off so once it goes into its dimmed mode like that it's just a big black void on your wrist and only comes to life when you've sh when you shake your wrist or you interact with the watch so again you'll see in a few seconds that will go just to a black screen which I think is just a bit ugly and a bit bit weird looking so if you go back to settings and enable that so screen is is always on it will just go to a dimmed mode like that so if you actually we'll go into some other watch faces in a bit but you can see that this is actually a power saving dimmed mode essentially and if I shake it it comes to life and shows a little bit more detail just a few more Graphics but um it's nice to have a watch face there all the time so even if you're not looking it directly again and you don't actually have to shake your wrist or touch it to see the time you can just view the time from wherever you are which is quite nice and I think is although perhaps will have a slight impact on battery you're going to be losing quite a lot of functionality if you just have a big black circle on your wrist for 90% of the time so I'd recommend keeping that on and um even if and just accept the slight toll it probably takes on the battery but it's probably not too bad it's it's probably an option that they've thought about and um made Fairly efficient in its use of battery talking about the battery inside we have a 410 milliamp battery which is actually considerably bigger than the uh Moto 360 which only has 320 milliamps and in most tests this does perform quite a bit better than the 360 you probably would you probably do want to charge it every night but you can get a solid day and a half out of it with moderate use does only having a decent battery life to trct from the Smartwatch experience and does it put you off perhaps buying one well what I would say is don't think why would I only want a watch that I have to charge all the time you know standard watches last pretty much forever you might have to wind them every now and then but you certainly don't have to worry about battery life on them and although this is true and it doesn't last quite as long as perhaps we'd like just treat it like your smartphone you're probably going to charge that every night anyway so just drop this watch into its cradle maybe in the same process or and right next to your smartphone and just charge them both overnight anyway as you probably would normally with your phone so treat it like a smartphone and it'll be there and working whenever you need it and essentially if you haven't got a smartphone with you and it's not paired then it becomes not quite useless but um you're going to be needing the battery on your smartphone to be up as well so just charge both things at the same time and you never then you'll never really have to worry about the battery life on this so let's talk about the uses of a smart watch which is actually probably one of the more uh fundamental aspects of it first off like all good watches it does tell the time which is quite a nice feature um this the LGG watch are only comes in Black so one of the primary customer Iz ation features you can get and use is to change the watch face uh fortunately there's quite a number of them if you hold if you long hold here you'll see a list of recently used and all watch faces that you can use you can get more a lot of them are paid for but you can get more on the Android Wear app on your smartphone and interestingly you can actually also change the watch pH from your smartphone this is the Android Wear app which you are recommended to download and you you need to pair with with the watch and as you can see if I perhaps click uh within about 2 seconds updates the face on the watch again this is over Bluetooth so it's quite nice that you can actually just go to the store download a few more watch faces and you can just flick through them quite quickly my personal favorites um are probably if we go back to my recently used ones the default one is red I believe um my some of my favorites are the Slate watch face the analog glow which is quite a futuristic looking uh green one I've you can change to the um color I set it to Blue which I think looks be a lot more futuristic so this will go into a dimmed mode in a second as you can see the dimmed mode is uh unique to each watch face as well they must have to create a on and a dimmed uh watch face this so this is a good power saving technique in again is quite subtle quite sensible looking not too glaring or entous and quite nice to use but then with a bit of a shake or even you saw that quite just a subtle movement it'll wake up and you'll get your full nice fancy looking watch face back so if I show you a couple more of these um we'll scroll along another one I quite like is Castle White um Club is quite interesting and definitely going to be to some people's tastes although most definitely not mine but uh the point is there's not a great deal of customization you can do to the watch you can change the wrist perhaps put a metal one or a different color but you're still stuck with this big black body here and there's not an awful lot you can do to make it your own uh which is something that a lot of people do want to do so changing the watch face and having access to a quite a significant number of them although many you do have to pay for is nice and a good way of really making your own and making it stand out a little bit so being a smartwatch in addition to telling the time which is always useful we actually do have quite a number of functions we can use it for so I'll just run you through some of the probably most common probably the most useful functions you can have in the watch these are mostly dependent on having a solid hsdpa or 3G or 4G or Wi-Fi connection um and overall actually a lot of the applications do genuinely feel like you're going to be saving time um or just um streamlining some processes you use otherwise with your phone these mainly being Facebook and Twitter notifications texts emails you can send text it's all mainly through as you just saw there uh Google Now so as soon as you double tap the screen it begins listen to your voice so perhaps if I try what's the meaning of life you can see that picks up pretty quickly it such as Google and this is the Wikipedia entry of the meaning of life so this actually all runs quite smoothly quite Sly and is what's the time in Tokyo actually pretty useful is it is it going to rain in London so these are all quite useful and things you probably use the Google Now feature on your phone for and it's actually quite Nifty on your watch so a lot of the main functions of the watch do use the Google voice recording uh to enable you to do a lot more stuff so sending texts replying to emails uh navigating setting alarm setting a note making a memo these are all done speaking into your into the watch and it actually picks it up remarkably well there aren't any speakers on here so you're not going to get any voice feedback from Google but it has a I don't actually know whether microphone placement is but you can talk to it at a decent distance and it will pick it up quite well even in crowded areas and so the vast majority is done actually hands free you perhaps um might click on navigate or make a note set a timer so and then you'll just essentially talk to it which is pretty straightforward and easy to use there are quite a few interesting apps you can use one of the more interesting ones is uh fit which if you pair with your phone and you download the app on your Android phone actually you makes use of the heart rate heart rate monitor inside to obviously measure your heart rate the podometer and and can tell you how many steps you've taken and your goals and it will sync up to your phone and tell you roughly how you're doing so let's try out the heart rare mod as quickly this isn't always going to work and it does take a little while but we'll see if it works this is pressed fairly comfortably against my wrist it's not too tight it might it may actually need to be tighter yeah that's not too bad 70 so if we check again for consistency 51 so uh okay that's perhaps tells you just maybe that you shouldn't rely on it for uh medical purposes or not good to your doctor based on your phone based on your smartwatch's heart rate Mar because we've had I've just jumped 20 beats per minute in about 10 seconds so again perhaps not quite uh scientific but um it's quite nice to have and um perhaps if you just been to the r been for a run or been to the gym you might want to use it before and after see what the difference is but perhaps more usefully does count your steps and um translate into that and can translate into a calorie count so um through your phone so it can be quite nice for Fitness that way another big use uh for the Smartwatch for me is actually as a remote Player for my music if I uh were to play some music uh let's use a bit of uh a bit Beach Boys let's go back in so that's playing that's fine so if we go to here you see I just I've just swiped up from the bottom and swiping up essentially gives you the notifications double tapping gives you access to Google Now now and the apps so sometimes quite often you'll swipe up and nothing will happen because you haven't got any notifications but other times you'll see weather and music updates so right now if I go back and swipe up you'll see that the Black Keys are playing and I can pause it like that and I can it's a little bit little bit slow here per if I slide to the right so if we slide to the right we can have play full volume player Skip and go back button so let's try that again yep that changes the music that all works pretty well so this works at a reasonable Bluetooth distance and we can change the change the volume which you can see changes it on the phone as well remotely is a oh bit of a delay that yeah a little bit of a delay but it still works fairly well and perhaps more usefully just is used to pause or skip next track so if I run through a few of applications you may want to use uh including show showing my steps I've done clearly not enough today so we can swipe back um we can look at my agenda for today I've got not a lot planned so that's good if we keep moving on um I'll go back to navigation in a minute although it does have a Google Maps micro mode I actually have had quite a few problems making it work it does work I've read other reviews where people say it's actually works really well but I just can't get it to go beyond calculating route uh in fact I'll show you and I'll show you how I can start it using the Google now uh voice search so if I start if I wake it up from dimed mode and say okay Google Okay Google navigate from Bristol to Street that's where I live um you can see it's navigating and then nothing happens yeah so actually that sort of just went to a um so sort of minimized it there I swiped up to um open up again calculating route now from this point it would take about 10 seconds perhaps and then give you a mini map and then turn by turn by directions but unfortunately for this for this review I can't show you that working because it just doesn't seem to want to work this is actually the latest um software for the phone 5.0.2 and here it's just telling me to go and check my phone and basically use my phone and start messing about on my watch but it does work apparently but unfortunately I can't show you that other apps include some slightly more fun ones perhaps you can get from the store uh I say fun calculator is actually quite useful if I open up here this is a um third party app I think and uh is a nice little Nifty calculator I doubt you'd be a to take this into exams that's for sure if we go back you will see and actually the most recently used app become comes at the top of the list just beneath the speak now button so that's quite useful especially if there's a couple of apps you are hidden away within this further start menu they'll come right to the top as soon as you use it one quite fun app I found is this remote Effects Pro uh this is what I showed you right at the beginning this is quite useful uh so basically if you plant your phone maybe you have it your back pocket you plant it at the back of someone's chair or on someone's desk um I'd recommend having the volume up as high as you can and then you perhaps go and shoot someone like that that's stop that's quite so uh everyone knows smart watches are quite cool so if you can walk up up to someone and uh you know that's quite cool perhaps more funny perhaps not let's uh have a go with this one and I think you can perhaps figure out your own uses for this one uh so yeah reminiscent of perhaps the first uh bunch of apps of uh when smartphones eventually came came out but quite fun to use and uh espe I think what I do quite like is perhaps if you're going to stay somewhere new or uh someone's on their own you turn the volume up as high as you can hide it somewhere and then click this so it's not all productivity and notifications and navigation you can have some fun with this you can have a really sort of cool looking watch face whatever it fits your style and there a few although they are fairly few and far between and you mostly do have to pay for them bit it's a fun apps you can uh start and use to uh entertain yourself so overall app integration is pretty good and for most commonly used apps uh especially in terms of just simple notifications it's pretty good but you and you can receive like and reply uh through Google Now voice recording to Facebook messages you can play PA skip control volume of your music and you can do pretty much most key things with most common apps so Twitter Facebook Google+ YouTube uh Google Maps Etc email gmail so most things that you'd use on a day-to-day basis you'll get notifications for you can reply to by then speaking to it and uh in some situations you can perhaps like them if you don't if you're not interested in those uh apps you can dismiss them as you can see I'm swapping up that means I've got nothing going on uh if I send if I make if I get someone to send me a uh Facebook message I can show you how this alerts on the phone you can see how this notification works so I'm about to get a uh Facebook message in about 3 seconds that's my phone going off um so my phone's seeing it so you can see here this isn't always overly reliable oh it is there no okay it just didn't tell me it is there so if I if I were swipe up from the bottom here I can see this uh Facebook message which is quite nice so I can then scroll along and I can like it I'm not entirely sure what that does within a message um I can reply so if I click this and I'll start talking it's going really well thanks but I can't talk now that'll take a few seconds to send you can cancel it if you want to and it's off and that's pretty much what going to be using a Smartwatch for and it is quite cool to use actually it's it does streamline the situation a little bit you're not have to pull your phone out quite as often but what you did see though is I didn't actually get a notification immediately most com most often you do and especially with emails you will get a little uh notification Bell will come up and tell you what's going on but what I would say perhaps if you're expecting an important call or message or email I would probably still check my phone fairly often just in case maybe the Bluetooth pairing hasn't quite worked out or there signal isn't overly strong I would probably still check my phone as well so maybe I it's you can't rely completely on the watch uh to streamline your notifications anyway so that that that came up and uh so you can still see it's a touch a little bit fiddly you can see things aren't always working quite well enough one quick thing if you swipe down from the top you get the battery life uh you get the date and crucially you get an easy mute and mute on and off button if you scroll again you get a cinema mode which I think we darkens it and uh excuse that which darkens it and make sure make sure you don't get any uh any notifications and also appears to turn it off if you keep going you have uh that's the same one again so turn it off and sunlight mode which gives you that extra bu of brightness in case you need it I think that just tops it out to that six setting brightness mod so it's quite good that you can just swipe and mute essentially so you're not have to worry about this going off at any bad time but it doesn't have a speaker or anything so you're not going to be making too much noise at any point it's just going to be the vibration perhaps you want to stop so one final issue I would talk about perhaps is some people say that well you've got this nice expensive fancy watch on your hand and like a Rolex like anything fancy you it could perhaps attract thieves perhaps maybe people might want to steal this um it's you know it's quite a big it's quite an interesting looking watch and certainly if someone sees you using it people are going to think that's quite Nifty quite cool and some may want to Nick it off you uh but perhaps you that is one that is one argument but on the other hand you're not going to be actually taking your phone out of your pocket as much which means your phones which is probably going to be more valuable this is1 199 pounds about $260 phones were often twice that in value uh so even if this was stolen first of all it's less valuable second of all it's a little bit harder to grab from you because this is quite literally TR to you and like a phone which if you're holding can just be yanked out perhaps on a tube train and the other thing I would say is you as I say you're not going to be getting your phone out nearly as much because you can check your notifications on this so you're less likely to perhaps get out in a bar or restaurant or Cafe not that you should anyway because uh for social re reasons you should not be doing that but uh if you were to put it out you're less likely to forget it leav it on the bar have it stolen so perhaps on the one hand people may think well you're wearing this 200 lb device on your wrist someone's going to steal it well maybe they are but at the same time your phone's less likely to be uh lost or stolen so uh that's something to think about now I do try to make my reviews as professional as possible but sometimes during the review or even at the end of the review when you're trying to talk to the camera your cat comes and sits on you so uh we'll ignore that while I uh Briefly summarize the LG G watchr so hopefully she won't get in the way too too much and you don't mind but overall it's a really great Smartwatch actually I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed using it I was under the impression before I tried this which is my first Smartwatch that I would be uh a little skeptical of how useful it would be perhaps just how uh big it might be on your hand and how what people's reactions might be to it but uh it's actually been very positive overall I've enjoyed using it one of the things I liked about it the most I think is just how customizable the watch face is and I think think even though I I would say we're still in the first generation of smart watches it's quite impressive to see just how far we've got already so it will be interesting to see how the Apple eyew watch compares to this how the second gen versions of these which come out later in the year uh work out in comparison and I think for the price which is currently about1 18090 or about $260 $260 $270 uh it's not too bad it's quite comfortable you can change the strap if you need to to a a metal band or a different color one because it's a fairly standard size and so you can customize it a bit beyond just this big fairly bulky black thing sitting on your wrist if you keep the uh screen mode always on then it doesn't just become this big black void in your wrist and uh you get to um use it as a watch just all the time you know it's not a it's not a dark screen % at the time so would you would I buy one well I bought this one but uh I don't think I would just yet I think it's quite interesting it's fun to play with it's and there's a few apps which are quite fun but I'm not sure whether I would buy one just yet wait for perhaps the new second gen's one this year if you can wait if you can't wait by all means and I would suggest this one I haven't reviewed the Moto 360 which is probably its uh dead most uh closest competitor and the eyewatch is rumor to come out in sort of April so that'll be interesting to compare against that so if you need to if you really want to watch right now I would buy this LG gatr if you don't need it which I suspect most people don't uh because it is a bit of a luxury then uh perhaps it's worth holding off for a little bit but I really enjoyed reviewing and I hope you've enjoyed watching the video and it's been useful for you if you do enjoy these videos and the occasional picture or uh video of the cat involved her name is Sasha by the way then uh please like And subscribe and leave any comments or feedback if you had any so uh yeah uh thanks for watching and have a great day\n"
