iOS 15.4 Beta 1 Changes and Features! New emoji, Face ID, Universal Control, and more...
A Big Improvement in Privacy: Apple's iOS 15.4 Update
In a significant step towards enhancing user privacy, Apple has introduced a new feature in its latest update, iOS 15.4. The change addresses a concern that users may have had about accessing certain features without unlocking their device first. With this update, when trying to access items within the Wallet app, users are now required to authenticate using Touch ID or their passcode before proceeding. This new security measure ensures that users' personal data remains protected and secure.
Transitioning to iPadOS 15.4
Moving on to the iPadOS 15.4 update, one of the notable features is a new preference panel for gestures in the Notes app settings. Within this settings panel, users can find the "Corner Gestures" option, which allows them to configure their left and right corner swipes. Interestingly, this setting can also be found within the General Gestures section, providing users with flexibility and control over their gestural interactions with their device.
A New Feature for the Control Center
Another exciting feature introduced in iPadOS 15.4 is a new toggle for keyboard brightness in the Control Center. When enabled, this toggle allows users to adjust the backlight of their keyboard based on the ambient light environment. This handy feature ensures that the keyboard remains visible and readable even in low-light conditions. The setting can also be found within the Settings app under General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard.
Universal Control: A Game-Changer for Productivity
The iPadOS 15.4 update also brings Universal Control, a feature that revolutionizes the way users interact with their devices. This innovative feature allows users to control other devices, such as iPads or Macs, using a single keyboard and mouse. To enable Universal Control, users need to run the Mac OS 12.3 Beta on their Mac and ensure that the "Cursor and Keyboard" beta is enabled within the AirPlay and Handoff settings. Once set up, users can simply drag their cursor over to the edge of the screen to switch between devices seamlessly.
The Magic of Universal Control
One of the most impressive aspects of Universal Control is its ability to enable seamless control between devices. Using a single keyboard and mouse, users can effortlessly navigate between their iPad and Mac, creating a truly unified workflow experience. For example, when working on a document on their Mac, users can easily drag an image from their iPad to their Mac and vice versa. This feature also allows users to take advantage of features like Command Tabbing, which enables them to switch between apps within their device.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the iPadOS 15.4 update is a significant step forward for Apple's devices, offering numerous features that enhance user experience and productivity. From the improved privacy measures in iOS 15.4 to the innovative Universal Control feature, this update has something for everyone. Whether you're looking to upgrade your keyboard or want to take advantage of new gestures, iPadOS 15.4 is definitely worth checking out.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: entrue ios 15.4 has face id compatibility with face mask but that's really just the tip of the iceberg check out what's new in ios 15.4 okay so let's talk about face id in ios 15.4 beta 1. so when you set up face id for the first time whether during the initial setup of ios or when setting up face id after the fact you'll get the familiar face id setup screen where you go in and you scan your face the first time right but after that first time you're now going to be prompted to use face id with a face mask now this is completely optional you don't have to opt in to using face id with the face mask in fact apple says that face id is most accurate when used with full facial recognition only so we're going to choose not to use face id with a mask and as you can see it just says face id is now set up so you're good to go you only need to scan one time now what if we do want to use face id with the mask though how do we do that well super simple uh it is most accurate when it's set up for full face recognition but if you want to use face id while wearing a mask iphone can recognize the unique features around the eye to authenticate aka periocular recognition so we're going to go ahead and turn that on now this time we're going to choose use face id with the mask and now it's going to ask you to position your face in the camera frame and perform the scan again now you don't want to have your mask on while performing the scan because otherwise it's going to tell you your face must match the existing face id appearance so take your mask off don't have your face obstructed perform the scan and you're good now face id is going to want to scan again but this time it asks us to remove our glasses to perform that second scan and if you weren't wearing glasses you can always go in and add a pair of glasses after the fact i'll actually show you that here in just a second it's super simple super easy so you can see the button down below to add glasses you can do that after the fact i already have a pair of glasses added but if i wanted to add another pair i simply tap add glasses perform a scan with the pair of glasses that i want to use but like i said glasses a lot but and then go about your business there with the next scan so we're all done we have two pairs of glasses set up and it was time to put face id with the mask to the test now of course previously you could use your apple watch to unlock while wearing a mask but that had all sorts of limitations it wasn't as fast this one though i have to say works pretty well and you actually get the full face id experience more or less when wearing a mask so it unlocks just like that when wearing a mask no apple watch required and it also works with third-party apps and apple pay you will need an iphone 12 or higher to take advantage of face id with the mask now let's talk about some of the new emoji characters a part of the emoji 14.0 uh spec i guess if you will uh then you can see several new emoji characters right here in our list i'll just run through a few of them a few that stuck out to me like the melting face is awesome i get so hot here uh sometimes and i'll definitely be putting that to use you have the salute face and you have a little dotted line emoji but this next one i think is gonna get a lot of play yeah this one right here the troll i just have a feeling that's gonna be super popular around online communities and such now you also have a couple more the biting lip emoji the disco ball and the dead battery you have the crutches and the x-ray that kind of goes together sliding board looks like a license you got some beans a glass spilling out liquid an empty nest and a full nest life preserver tire and heart hands and let's go back to this one because this one right here is probably my favorite of them all now let's talk about apple wallet widget so you have a new widget in ios 14.5 the apple wallet widget it only works unfortunately right now at least with the apple card so let me show you how to get this all set up so all you do is long press on the home screen tap the little plus button in the upper left hand corner scroll all the way down to the wallet and there is the apple card widget or i guess the wallet widget for the apple card if you will so you just go ahead and add that widget to the home screen and as you can see it shows your card balance it shows your available credit i guess and it gives you a look at your your spending trends over a week over a month or over the year and if you want to change that you can go in and edit the widget and choose the different period so right now i have it set to weekly but like i said you can go in there if you tap right here you can change it to monthly or you can change it to yearly if you wish i'm going to keep it on weekly because i just like that most recent data all right let's see what it looks like when you go into dark mode so here is the new wallet widget in dark mode what do you guys think let me know down below in the comments okay so this right here listen up this one is cool so in the past i showed you how i set up an automation with shortcuts to automatically change the wallpaper whenever i charge my iphone like this so you get that notification you see that notification but you see the wallpaper automatically changed just because i plugged in my iphone if you'd like to see some shortcut tutorial videos thumbs up let me know down below now i'm going to go ahead and plug in again and watch the wallpaper it's going to change but more importantly you see that stupid notification that just sort of ruins the effect it ruins the the like mystique behind this wallpaper change because people see oh well there's something running right well now in ios 14.5 it is possible to disable that notification without any sort of workarounds like i had to do in the past so let me show you how this works so we're going to open up shortcuts all you do is you go to the automation find your automation and then below you'll see ask before running and notify when run so you want to make sure ask before running is disabled and then that will display the notify when run option which you can disable as well so when you turn that off you will no longer be notified when that shortcut automation runs it's just gonna run and it's just gonna do its thing so i'm gonna unplug and then i'm gonna plug back in and watch what happens folks watch what happens look at that such an appreciated new change all right so in ios 15.4 beta 1 the magnifier app now gains access to more cameras so previously in the magnifier app you could select between the front and the back camera right but now when you tap the camera icon you can select between several cameras right you can select auto you can select telephoto you can choose macro or selfie and obviously the one that sticks out to me the most is the telephoto if you're using an iphone pro so that telephoto is going to get you even closer to the action and then you can use the zoom option to zoom in or out and of course you can switch over to the selfie mode too if you want to trim your nose hairs i don't know zoom into your face whatever the case may be all right in ios 15.4 beta 1 you can now reset the experimental features in safari maybe you're thinking to yourself jeff what are you talking about experimental features well deeply buried within the safari settings under advanced and then under experimental features there's all sorts of like little sort of google labs sort of switches that you can change and enable or disable certain features within safari there aren't normal user facing features that you would enable or disable right but if you are an advanced user you can go in here and really mess around and tweak this thing into your heart's content but here's the problem what if you wanted to set things back to where they how they were right maybe there's a problem you've enabled something and now safari is just acting absolutely bonkers so let me show you what happens here in safari you see that even like the little text is now black here on our header images on dyna5 max so that's obviously not normal right shouldn't be working that way but obviously it's something i change and it's just loading slow as well so obviously something i enabled in those experimental features or maybe something i disabled isn't really playing nice with the web so here's the thing how do you figure out which one you changed right well you don't have to worry about that anymore because now you can reset all to defaults which is a brand new setting in ios 15.4 beta 1. and now you can configure app store notifications if you open up the app store you tap your little avatar in the upper right hand corner you'll now see a notification section just simply tap on that and now you can toggle the new features and updates and the recommendations and offers so i had to make this next screen a little bit bright but in previous versions of ios the status bar in safari the color match status bar would have like a little line a break that sort of ruined the illusion of that colored status bar this just full bleeding into the rest of the content but now in ios 15.4 beta 1 that little line break has been fixed now you'll notice a consolidation of the icloud mail preferences so if you go to settings you go to icloud you'll see icloud mail just like you would normally expect right but you see something different you see the little chevron on the right side that used to be just a normal switch you could either turn icloud mail on or off right here from the screen but now the settings have been merged which used to reside down below let me show you what i mean here so here is 15.3 see icloud mail just has a toggle and if you scroll down you'll see a section for mail which has always been weird to me like why did they i don't know i can't explain it but apple has fixed this issue so now everything's contained right here within icloud mail which makes total sense right so all your mail settings in one place and you can enable or disable icloud mail right there using that switch so nice change but did you notice something else the new custom email domain option is now found within the icloud mail settings this is for icloud plus subscribers and i've already set up some domains actually had a tutorial to show you how to set up custom email domains uh previously if you want to check that out be sure to do so but i have a couple of domains out there but the thing is this setting i don't think is fully baked yet because it's still sort of like just pushing you out to icloud.com to commence with the rest of the setup so i have some domains there that i set up on icloud they're visible here but you really can't do much without actually going out to the web on icloud.com so i can add a custom email domain as well if i want to and this is sort of the same ui you get on icloud.com but it's nice to see apple's building this out within ios but again like i was saying it's just going to push you out to icloud.com i don't think it's going to be that way forever i think eventually it will be at least mostly end to end within ios itself so i'm going to just add a domain hopefully no one has bought this yet apple.com all right now just go ahead and return and again as you can see it's just pushing you out to icloud.com to commence with that setup it'll ask you to log in and you can go out today to icloud.com and set up a custom email domain if you want to now here's a very interesting update if you go to settings and go back to icloud and you select password and security you're going to notice something at the bottom of the page access icloud data on the web which is enabled by default of course when this is on you can access your icloud mail calendar contacts photos notes reminders files documents etc but if you disable that access to these items will be restricted on the web now don't get too happy yet because it doesn't appear that this has gone live just yet if you try to disable to select don't access nothing happens so now notes and reminders gain improved live text integration so now you'll see a new scan text option when you tap the camera button and literally you just hold a book up in front or any other text it will grab that text for you you just tap insert and it will insert that text for you just like that and this also works within the reminders app so let's go ahead and head over to the reminders app and i'll show you the same thing so i've tapped the camera button selected scan text to just hold the book in front that's an interesting quote isn't it alright so let's go ahead and get that scanned in and select insert and there we go so live text better integration within reminders and within notes what do you guys think now there's a new airpods pro accessibility glyph so previously when you went to accessibility and you went down the airpods it would just have a little generic pair of headphones but now you get airpods pro subtle change but nice nonetheless all right so there's a new updated airpods status screen that appears when you open up a pair of airpods next to your iphone you can see you want to take one of the earbuds that said earbuds and you see the updated status screen and in the tv app you can now choose what appears in the up next display area so when you go to the settings app and you scroll down to tv well let's go back here let's get down to tv there we go tv now you'll see up next display so you can choose to display a still frame which is basically a steel frame from what you're currently watching or you can choose poster art which shows the main title images for shows and movies and now you get tighter share play integration and apple has made apis available to third-party developers as well but here as an example in the music app you can now initiate a share play directly which will start a facetime conversation uh which is really nice right because shareplay wasn't all that discoverable before but now apple is obviously making an effort to make shareplay more discoverable so that users can take advantage of it so i started that share play to share one of the songs from the music app just like that super simple super easy now you can also find a new share play button and you guessed it the share sheet so that again allows you to quickly initiate a facetime call directly from the application without having to open facetime first super handy now in ios 15.4 beta 1 you can add notes to keychain so i'm going to show you one of my passwords here nine to five mac i have the verification code which is also cool that was added in ios 15 so you can use to factor off now the add notes button is new for ios 15.4 and it does exactly what it says it does it allows you to add notes to your password so if there's something important you want to remember related to your password you just pop that into the notes and that's it now what's really interesting about this is you can actually go and search for the note within the search field now it doesn't yet give you a preview of the text string so you can kind of see what it actually found but it will surface the note where that search string is found cool new feature now in previous versions of ios when you double pressed the side button even when your iphone was unlocked it would actually surface items related to apple pay like membership cards and things like that which could contain id numbers and other sensitive data right so that's obviously like a privacy problem if you could access that without unlocking first so apple addressed this issue in ios 15.4 now you have to authenticate either with touch id or with the passcode before it will show you those items within your wallet so that's a big improvement for privacy in ios 15.4 for sure so let's transition over to ipad os 15.4 so in the notes app or actually in the notes app settings you're going to find a new preference panel for gestures so scroll down you can see corner gestures so that allows you to configure your left corner and right corner swipe now if that seems familiar that's because it is because this setting can also be found within general gestures so that allows you also to configure your left corner swipe which in this case is configured to create a screenshot or your right corner swipe which is in this case configured for a quick note now this is a cool new feature for the control center there's a new toggle for keyboard brightness for the ipad so when i enable that i have a new keyboard brightness toggle which is oh disabled right now because i don't have a keyboard attached obviously right so let's go ahead and attach a keyboard and swipe down tap it oh but i still can't do anything because the brightness isn't on because i'm in a bright environment and the keyboard backlight automatically turns off when that's the case but as soon as i'm in an environment with a lack of light in the keyboard automatically turns on the backlight then i'm able to adjust the backlight using this handy toggle now you can also find this setting in settings general keyboard hardware keyboard okay so universal control it is finally here so if you go to settings general airplay and handoff you want to make sure cursor and keyboard beta is enabled that is universal control you also need to be running the mac os 12.3 beta so universal control as its name alludes to as a way to control other devices using the same hardware keyboard and mouse that you use with your mac in other words universal control isn't an external display for your mac that's sidecar to enable universal control you simply drag your mouse over to the edge of the screen left or right depending on where your ipad is oriented so if your ipad's to the left of your display obviously drag your mouse over to the left side and you're going to see something that looks like this right so you just continue to drag over and you'll pop over from your mac to your ipad you just push through to the other side you see that so now i have my cursor on my ipad i can move it between my ipad to my mac and back to my ipad back to the mac and just keep moving between the two so it's a completely seamless experience there's nothing to set up you simply drag your cursor over to the edge pop it through and now look i'm controlling my ipad with my mouse that i'm normally using with my mac so i don't need two sets of keyboards for instance now obviously i'm using the magic keyboard here but imagine for a second that the ipad was just sitting there with no keyboard attached so you can see i can drag an image from the ipad over to my mac just like that drop it on the desktop now i can't move apps between the two obviously because this is not an external display but it's basically a way to control other devices like your ipad using one set of input devices in this case my magic mouse and my magic keyboard so i can also drag over files between these two so i just drag an image from my mac over to my ipad i can do the opposite as well there's more that you can do with universal control i'll talk about that here in an upcoming video that's dedicated to universal control if you want to see that let me know down below in the comment section but again you can also use your keyboard see i'm just command tabbing right here so when my cursor is focused on my ipad then my keyboard commands affect the ipad when i move the cursor back over to my mac the keyboard commands go back to the mac makes sense pretty simple straightforward apple has made this super smooth i'm impressed with it i do wish it could do some additional things but i'm impressed that it works as smoothly as it does you literally just sit an eligible ipad next to your eligible mac and it just works so ladies and gentlemen ios 15.4 is a massive update right uh one we've been waiting for for a very long time and it's finally here so let me know what you guys think down below in the comment section and also check out this new video that i've done on the dji mic a great accessory for iphone users looking to up their production value and stay tuned for more coverage of ios 15.4 i'll catch you guys in the next video this is jeff with to 9.5 mactrue ios 15.4 has face id compatibility with face mask but that's really just the tip of the iceberg check out what's new in ios 15.4 okay so let's talk about face id in ios 15.4 beta 1. so when you set up face id for the first time whether during the initial setup of ios or when setting up face id after the fact you'll get the familiar face id setup screen where you go in and you scan your face the first time right but after that first going to choose use face id with the mask and now it's going to ask you to position your face in the camera frame and perform the scan again now you don't want to have your mask on while performing the scan because otherwise it's going to tell you your face must match the existing face id appearance so take your mask off don't have your face obstructed perform the scan and you're good now face id is going to want to scan again but this time it asks us to remove our glasses to perform that second scan and if you weren't wearing glasses you can always go in and add a pair of glasses after the fact i'll actually show you that here in just a second it's super simple super easy so you can see the button down below to add glasses you can do that after the fact i already have a pair of glasses added but if i wanted to add another pair i simply tap add glasses perform a scan with the pair of glasses that i want to use but like i said glasses a lot but and then go about your business there with the next scan so we're all done we have two pairs of glasses set up and it was time to put face id with the mask to the test now of course previously you could use your apple watch to unlock and such now you also have a couple more the biting lip emoji the disco ball and the dead battery you have the crutches and the x-ray that kind of goes together sliding board looks like a license you got some beans a glass spilling out liquid an empty nest and a full nest life preserver tire and heart hands and let's go back to this one because this one right here is probably my favorite of them all now let's talk about apple wallet widget so you have a new widget in ios 14.5 the apple wallet widget it only works unfortunately right now at least with the apple card so let me show you how to i guess the wallet widget for the apple card if you will so you just go ahead and add that widget to the home screen and as you can see it shows your card balance it shows your available credit i guess and it gives you a look at your your spending trends over a week over a month or over the year and if you want to change that you can go in and edit the widget and choose the different period so right now i have it set to weekly but like i said you can go in there if you tap right here you can change it to monthly or you can change it to yearly if you wish i'm going to keep it on weekly because i just like that most recent data all right let's see what it looks like when you go into dark mode so here is the new wallet widget in dark mode what do you guys think let me know down below there we go so live text better integration within reminders and within notes what do you guys think now there's a new airpods pro accessibility glyph so previously when you went to accessibility and you went down the airpods it would just have a little generic pair of headphones but now you get airpods pro subtle change but nice nonetheless all right so there's a new updated airpods status screen that appears when you open up a pair of airpods next to your iphone you can see you want to take one of the earbuds that said earbuds and you see the updated status screen and in the tv app you can now choose what appears in the up next display area so when you go to the settings app and you scroll down to tv well let's go back here let's get down to tv there we go tv now you'll see up next display so you can choose to display a still frame which is basically a steel frame from what you're currently watching or you can choose poster art which shows the main title images for shows and movies and now you get tighter share play integration and apple has made apis available to third-party developers as well but here as an example in the music app you can now initiate a share play directly which will start a facetime conversation uh which is really nice right because shareplay wasn't all that discoverable before but now apple is obviously making an effort to make shareplay more discoverable so that users can take advantage of it so i started that share play to share one of the songs from the music app just like that super simple super easy now you can also find a new share play button and you guessed it the share sheet so that again allows you to quickly initiate a facetime call directly from the application without having to open facetime first super handy now in ios 15.4 beta 1 you can add notes to keychain so i'm going to show you one of my passwords here nine to five mac i have the verification code which is also cool that was added in ios 15 so you can use to factor off now the add notes button is new for ios 15.4 and it does exactly what it says it does it allows you to add notes to your password so if there's something important you want to remember related to your password you just pop that into the notes and that's it now what's really interesting about this is you can actually go and search for the note within the search field now it doesn't yet give you a preview of the text string so you can kind of see what it actually found but it will surface the note where that search string is found cool new feature now in previous versions of ios when you double pressed the side button even when your iphone was unlocked it would actually surface items related to apple pay like membership cards and things like that which could contain id numbers and other sensitive data right so that's obviously like a privacy problem if you could access that without unlocking first so apple addressed this issue in ios 15.4 now you have to authenticate either with touch id or with the passcode before it will show you those items within your wallet so that's a big improvement for privacy in ios 15.4 for sure so let's transition over to ipad os 15.4 so in the notes app or actually in the notes app settings you're going to find a new preference panel for gestures so scroll down you can see corner gestures so that allows you to configure your left corner and right corner swipe now if that seems familiar that's because it is because this setting can also be found within general gestures so that allows you also to configure your left corner swipe which in this case is configured to create a screenshot or your right corner swipe which is in this case configured for a quick note now this is a cool new feature for the control center there's a new toggle for keyboard brightness for the ipad so when i enable that i have a new keyboard brightness toggle which is oh disabled right now because i don't have a keyboard attached obviously right so let's go ahead and attach a keyboard and swipe down tap it oh but i still can't do anything because the brightness isn't on because i'm in a bright environment and the keyboard backlight automatically turns off when that's the case but as soon as i'm in an environment with a lack of light in the keyboard automatically turns on the backlight then i'm able to adjust the backlight using this handy toggle now you can also find this setting in settings general keyboard hardware keyboard okay so universal control it is finally here so if you go to settings general airplay and handoff you want to make sure cursor and keyboard beta is enabled that is universal control you also need to be running the mac os 12.3 beta so universal control as its name alludes to as a way to control other devices using the same hardware keyboard and mouse that you use with your mac in other words universal control isn't an external display for your mac that's sidecar to enable universal control you simply drag your mouse over to the edge of the screen left or right depending on where your ipad is oriented so if your ipad's to the left of your display obviously drag your mouse over to the left side and you're going to see something that looks like this right so you just continue to drag over and you'll pop over from your mac to your ipad you just push through to the other side you see that so now i have my cursor on my ipad i can move it between my ipad to my mac and back to my ipad back to the mac and just keep moving between the two so it's a completely seamless experience there's nothing to set up you simply drag your cursor over to the edge pop it through and now look i'm controlling my ipad with my mouse that i'm normally using with my mac so i don't need two sets of keyboards for instance now obviously i'm using the magic keyboard here but imagine for a second that the ipad was just sitting there with no keyboard attached so you can see i can drag an image from the ipad over to my mac just like that drop it on the desktop now i can't move apps between the two obviously because this is not an external display but it's basically a way to control other devices like your ipad using one set of input devices in this case my magic mouse and my magic keyboard so i can also drag over files between these two so i just drag an image from my mac over to my ipad i can do the opposite as well there's more that you can do with universal control i'll talk about that here in an upcoming video that's dedicated to universal control if you want to see that let me know down below in the comment section but again you can also use your keyboard see i'm just command tabbing right here so when my cursor is focused on my ipad then my keyboard commands affect the ipad when i move the cursor back over to my mac the keyboard commands go back to the mac makes sense pretty simple straightforward apple has made this super smooth i'm impressed with it i do wish it could do some additional things but i'm impressed that it works as smoothly as it does you literally just sit an eligible ipad next to your eligible mac and it just works so ladies and gentlemen ios 15.4 is a massive update right uh one we've been waiting for for a very long time and it's finally here so let me know what you guys think down below in the comment section and also check out this new video that i've done on the dji mic a great accessory for iphone users looking to up their production value and stay tuned for more coverage of ios 15.4 i'll catch you guys in the next video this is jeff with to 9.5 mac\n"
