How-to - Master Dark Mode in iOS 13 & iPadOS!

Everything You Need to Know About iOS 13's Dark Mode

Here is my iPhone 10s, running iOS 13, and as you can see, we are in a beautiful dark mode skin that Apple is applying as part of this update. Of course, it's not mandatory - you don't have to be in dark mode if you don't want to be. But Apple really has done an amazing job of bringing that dark UI across all of its native apps. Some apps, like weather, still have a little bit light, but that's not exactly an easy UI to translate between light and dark. It's supposed to reflect the weather that's actually outside, but of the apps that Apple can change, they have done an amazing job.

Really everything - all the overlays, all the menus - it all looks really nice, especially on the latest phones that have those OLED displays. Going into settings, you can automatically choose between light and dark just by toggling which one you'd prefer. You can also have this happen automatically when this is turned on, so you can create your own custom schedule. You want to turn it off in the morning, but turn it back on at night? No problem. It's that easy. And there's a new button down there at the bottom with a really nice animation as you switch from dark to light - and will stay that way, just like Night Shift until sunrise or sunset.

One of the coolest features about dark mode is how it automatically adjusts to your surroundings. When you're in a bright environment, the screen becomes lighter to make everything easier to see. But when you go back inside at night, the screen goes dark again, making for a seamless transition between day and night. And that's not all - Apple has also included four new wallpapers that take advantage of this new UI. They seem very similar to the dynamic wallpapers from Mac OS Mohave, but with one key difference: they get darker and lighter over time throughout the day.

They're really striking, too - there are four different colors to choose from, each one switching seamlessly between light and dark as you switch between day and night. And even if you don't want a dynamic wallpaper, you can still have a background that switches between light and dark. It's just easier on the eyes, that's all. But what really impresses me about dark mode is how it works with the iPad, too. It's not just for iPhone - because when it comes to iOS 13 and iPad OS, everything looks just as sharp and just as amazing.

And even third-party apps are going to be able to take advantage of this new feature, thanks to a new developer API. Developers like Twitter and Home Pass have all been using their own versions of dark mode for quite some time now - and now they can do it even easier. With iOS 13, everything happens in the background, so developers don't need to do as much work to integrate this into their apps. And that means you'll see almost every major app switching to dark mode right away.

But we know what you're really here for: when is all of this going to be available? Well, that's easy - iOS 13 is finally here! It's time to take advantage of this amazing new feature and see how it changes the way you use your iPhone or iPad.
