RemixOS - Interview with Jide Technologies' David Ko

Remix OS: A Future of Android Experience?

The concept of Remix OS has been gaining attention lately, and we had the opportunity to sit down with the team behind this innovative project. As we delved deeper into their world, it became clear that Remix OS is more than just a tweaked version of Android – it's a new direction for the ecosystem.

One of the key aspects of Remix OS is its ability to adapt to different form factors. When asked about the future of Remix OS, the team mentioned that they're focusing on larger screens, particularly tablets and smartphones. However, they emphasized that their primary goal is not to limit themselves to one specific form factor. Instead, they want to explore the full potential of Android and create an ecosystem that seamlessly integrates across various devices.

The idea behind Remix OS is to provide a Windows-like interface on smaller screens, allowing users to access a range of applications and features previously reserved for larger displays. This is made possible by the team's focus on creating a hybrid operating system that can balance the needs of both low-end and high-end devices. By optimizing Remix OS for Snapdragon processors and other affordable hardware, they aim to make it accessible to a wider audience.

When asked about the challenges of adapting Remix OS to different form factors, the team acknowledged that there are some hurdles to overcome. However, they emphasized their commitment to listening to user feedback and continuously improving the software. As part of this process, they're working closely with partners to bring Remix OS to various devices, including tablets and smartphones.

The Remix OS beta is currently available for download, and users can experience the full range of features firsthand. With its seamless touch-screen interface and intuitive design, Remix OS promises to revolutionize the way we interact with our devices. The team's vision is to create an ecosystem that allows apps to thrive across multiple platforms, from smartphones to TVs.

In terms of the roadmap for Remix OS, the team has hinted at some exciting developments in the pipeline. While they're not revealing too much just yet, they assured us that there will be a lot of new features and updates coming soon. As always, the community's feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Remix OS.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enit's Josh varar from Android authority what's going on everybody and I'm here with David Co with J Technologies um and first question real quick it's j right it's not okay we weren't too sure for a second there because of the way that the characters are put together so it was a little bit confusing but yes J Technologies and it's super exciting this morning this very morning on the second day of mwc 2016 G Technologies announced and released rather the beta of remix OS for PCs uh so I wanted to sit with down with uh of course with David and be able to take a look at some of the devices including a future tablet that we did kind of see at CES uh but we wanted to talk about the future of remix OS and where you think that tablet Computing in particular but I'll move into other areas as well is going based upon what you guys have done with remix OS definitely sure so uh first of all why don't you give us some information about the beta and uh sort of let the people know uh exactly what to expect about remix OS and what they can do with remix OS via the beta sure um in 2016 in CS we launched our first Alpha release for um Android PC um so the interesting thing is in within a month we're getting a lot of feedback from our community so within the month we can actually quickly adding all the features that user requested to into the Beta so I'll name a couple so first of all they wanted to be installed on a hot dis mhm instead of a USB drive okay uh they want OTA updates now that we are supporting 32 bits as well as U ufi as well so that opens up a lot more uh compatibility as well okay so yeah we did get the uh the USB thumb drives from CES and a couple of our guys uh Jonathan feice in particular on the team has been really enjoying remix OS but uh from what I gathered um at the Qualcomm Booth which is where you guys were meeting up with me um you also have the tablet obviously so I asked you a little bit earlier we actually spoke before this interview um about the future of tablet Computing um and we use the uh the pixel c as an example and you had a lot of good insight as to why the pixel C even if the software well I'll let you sort of say what you said earlier um knowing that the Android space especially the tablet software is uh maybe not the best for productivity at the moment what do you think that remix OS is going to be able to bring to the tablet side of things um yeah so well I think it's a natural progression the way that we looked at the history of Android you look at Way Back 9 10 years ago when they first launched the G1 yeah um it started off as a cell phone and then tablets TV and then you see weo Android auto there's one thing in common the common thing is all consuming content so this is the one big part of Android now I think it's a natural progression that you move into the productivity space Not Just consuming content so I predict that 2016 2017 is going to be a big year for Android going into this space uh in 20 2015 Android launched the pixel C the way that we looked at it and said this is actually very exciting the way that some people have criticized pixel C on the productivity sites are not there yet but the way that I looked at it is Google is sending a very clear signal to developers as well as to the world saying that we are going into the productivity space so 2016 we expecting to be something good coming up from uh from Google okay well I I love that you say about the productivity space because there have been a lot of examples recently on tablets about let's say the creative side and I know that uh Adobe Lightroom was announced yesterday as well um there are also uh digital digital drawing applications and whatnot uh the main example that I can think of right now is uh the iPad Pro with the uh pencil um given given Android as your back end and the way that you're presenting the workspace with the windows and uh the ability to launch uh multiple windows at once um are you going to be supporting these types of let's say CAD drawing uh applications or let's say something that Windows 10 mobile might be able to provide on like a Surface Pro uh certainly um I think the way that we seeing in tablets some of people are saying that the tablet sales has been dropping recently uh but we are we believe that it's actually the growing sector is the twoin one F factor and the larger screen 10 in or above you can you have seen that um iPad Pro you mentioned it was a 12in tablet and obviously service is doing well and Google came up with pixel C so 2016 2017 is going to be a big year for Android coming into a larger screen size okay um so how about uh certain case scenarios on remix os are our applications like say for uh for drawing and for CAD drawing and everything like that or even 3D modeling is Android based on remix OS powerful enough to provide that experience certainly uh remix o has always been focusing on larger screen tablets largic screen F factors even PCS so in this kind of uh scenario larger screen for productivity is perfect for it larger screen for your pan drawing multiple windows so you can have a browser open as well as a drawing uh application open this is actually perfect perfect scenario okay and uh obviously we met at Qualcomm Booth earlier um why don't you tell us about your do you guys have a relationship with Qualcomm now uh what what is uh what is the partnership that you guys have we have a very close partnership with uh Qualcomm we have built a prototype uh of the Next Generation uh tablet uh using a high-end calcomm chipset as a reference sign so we're looking for uh um sometime this year we'll be launching something very exciting oh okay great um and I imagine that the optimizations behind remix OS will not really piggyback but rely on let's say Snapdragon processors and whatnot um so is it different creating the experience of remix OS for a Snapdragon processor compared to a PC um so uh are there any hurdles between the two because I understand that you want to have the same remix OS on both experiences right um the way that we looked at remix OS is we fully optimize it for both affordable low-end uh devices as well as high-end obviously if you're using highend some of the graphics some of the games will be smoother uh but in general for browsing watching YouTube uh browsing Facebook Twitter all this for a low and affordable PC is completely okay okay um and with the uh with the tablet that we've been talking about and you're seeing some footage of it right now as I'm going to take a look at it a little bit more later um I had a this is a thought that I had I understand that you're focusing on the larger screens and whatnot do you see remix OS moving into a more mobile space in terms of let's say smartphones or do you think are you thinking of a different form factor uh at all but I was thinking like is would would a remix OS smartphone version ever become a thing for you guys do you think because the whole because multitasking in and of itself on an Android smart or any smartphone for that matter certainly so remix OS we never limit ourself in just one a form factor right now we're focusing on loger screen obviously um but the key thing is I think Android has un limited possibility I think this is just the very beginning of Android the key thing about Android is the ecosystem ecosystem you can have apps on your phone you can apps on your TV you can have apps on larger screen display um so it's a natural progression for remix OS to adopt to different form factors okay and uh okay so with that with all of that in mind obviously we're really excited to see where we xox uh remix OS goes and I was playing with the tablet earlier and it just seems so seamless to be able to have a touchcreen Windows like interface that provides all of that and it looks it looks wonderful I was I was going to say um now you've have now you have the beta out what is the next step in your road map for remix OS what can we look forward to in terms of release and also in terms of feature sets you know is there anything else you're going to be bringing out on the software um I think the most important part is to work closely with our community uh one of the key thing about our company is we're not very traditional we spend a lot of time listening to our community building up our community listening to what their feedbacks are so we're going to continue listening to feedback improving our software I think that's the number one most important thing uh and also sometime this year uh second half this year you'll be seeing a lot of partners coming up with remix OS uh different devices okay wonderful all right well um I do want to make sure that our audience knows where they can find all of uh remix OS also to if if if anything if they want to become part of the community where could the people find uh remix OS and GI Technologies for that matter so that they can join in on the fun that is remix OS the best way is to come to our website www.j.com all right wonderful you're going to see links in the description below to be able to find all of that and I would encourage everyone to see this version of Android because for years we have had this version of Android that is uh the recent app screen kind of really um even on tablets just focused upon the sort of the home screen experience but now it's a workspace and you're seeing the footage right now that also that we had from CES uh of how you were able to open multiple apps at the same time I think that on I think for the most part we always knew that Android is able to open to have multiple tasks going at once but it's never fully shown to us and I think that's why I think remix OS is such a nice uh a nice step forward all right wonderful well I want to thank you again David thank you so much for the for the interview and I'm going to go ahead and play around with the tablet some more thanks so keep it tuned to Android 34 even more about remix OS and don't forget to headit on over to their site in the description these guys are super fun to hang out with so we want you guys to see what they have in store with the beta that you can try on PCS now so keep you tuned to Android 3 for even more and remember to subscribe to our Channel if you haven't already so you can see even more from mwc 2016 thank youit's Josh varar from Android authority what's going on everybody and I'm here with David Co with J Technologies um and first question
