The Mercedes CLK63 Black Series Is The Best $100,000 AMG

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: ennext to me is the clk 63 amg black series and it's one of my favorite mercedes ever made with a killer soundtrack amazing looks and performance to match the black series is one heck of a car so what makes it so special and what does it actually like to drive today we're gonna find out exactly that the black series originated with the slk 55 amg in fact at the time amg was trying to make a racing series for asian markets during 2004 and 2005 they added a hard top to the roadster slk and the black series was born fast forward to 2008 and we have this the clk 63 black series it's actually the second of six black series in the lineup recently i had the pleasure of reviewing the c63 black series and the amg gt black series at the heart of the black series is a 6.2 liter naturally aspirated v8 that pumps out 500 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque that's 25 horsepower more than the non-black series variant thanks to a new intake revised tuning and exhaust power is sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission 60 happens in a blistering 4.2 seconds and it goes on to run the quarter mile in 12.6 well the 6.2 liter is a work of art so is the black series styling it's lower it's wider and it's meaner but it's also subtle at the same time if you're not an enthusiast the chances that you actually know this is a black series variant are slim and that's part of the appeal of the car it's also exceptionally rare with only 350 ever being made for the u.s market compared to the standard clk we've got massive air intakes in the front for additional cooling we also have these really cool carbon fiber vents one's a trans cooler and one's an engine oil cooler it also happens to look incredible the enormous flared fenders are one of the black series unique stylistic elements and it's also in the name of performance it's three inches wider in the front than the standard car and 2.6 inches wider in the rear it's also got the signature little black series vent here with the famous 6.3 logo although it looks like these vents aren't actually functional at the rear of the black series we've got a massive carbon fiber diffuser quad exhaust instead of having an enormous show boaty wing it's got this little carbon fiber spoiler i love that all right let's hop inside on the inside of the black series there are tons of unique elements for instance this steering wheel it's a squirkle it's neither a square nor a circle i've seen flat bottom steering wheels but i've never seen flat bottom and signed flat steering wheels with a little bit of curvature now behind those are these aluminum really nice paddles they actually feel good to actuate another really unique element is the shift lever normally you've got a big shift lever but why do you need that they've made it really simple it's got this tiny little shifter that you put it into drive it's also got controls to switch between manual comfort and sport mode as well as an engine start button this is kind of funky but i actually love it now check this out when have you ever seen a clock in the instrument cluster i've seen on lexuses and some mercedes a clock right here but mercedes apparently thinks you really need to know the time at all times so they've given you a speedo that goes up to 200 miles an hour a beautiful tachometer and a nice clock in the name of weight savings mercedes removed the rear seats in the clk black series and they've left these rather interesting looking luggage compartments i guess in a pinch you might be able to go back there although you don't have a seat belt so it's definitely not suggested or illegal the funny part is even though nobody can sit back there they're still floor mats and they're still air conditioning vents from the standard car which i thought was kind of funny honestly though it makes it really practical because the trunk isn't all that large so you could actually daily drive a black series and put all your luggage in the back all right time to drive the black series so to fire this thing up go ahead and turn the key shift this little shift lever into drive now there's multiple different driving modes we're going to put it into manual by clicking that button so we can see manual on the dash there let's turn the air conditioning down a little bit i love the fact that the only button on this side of the dash is traction control off now we're not going to be doing that today because this isn't my car and it's a 500 horsepower rear wheel drive beast but i'm sure that is really really fun and i'm sure this does crazy smoky burnouts in drive first gear let's go ahead and crew is down beautiful 17 mile drive now the first thing i noticed when i got behind the wheel of the black series was how small the car feels on the outside it's not overly cramped on the inside it actually feels like you've got plenty of headroom plenty of shoulder room although the seats hug you in place very very well check that out cool gull wing car but it feels so light and small despite the fact that it's a 3 900 pound car which isn't particularly light the actual dimensions feel like you can place this car on the road like it's some sort of little go-kart the other thing i was expecting is the transmission to lag a ton on up shifts and downshifts it's an automatic it's not a double clutch but surprisingly particularly with the up shifts it shifts really quickly i'm actually very impressed the steering while there's not a ton of feedback in the wheel is very heavy and precise it's a lot tighter than you're used to on typical mercedes vehicles obviously this is a black series but it's still part of that mercedes brand that has a luxury feel to their performance cars but this is more of a full-fledged sports car and that 6.2 liter sounds amazing go ahead and accelerate again little wheel spin wow i'm actually really impressed with this car both from a handling standpoint the sound the transmission and just how small it feels on the road now i will say the interior is starting to feel a bit dated compared to modern cars but the exterior is not it's aged so gracefully i love the proportions i love the smaller design but it's also got those crazy flared fenders and aggressive vents on the side and those little ductings on the front uh the trans cooler as well as the engine oil cooler that just look so special and that rear end is to die for with those widened hips as well it really doesn't need anything done to it most cars you'd like to lower it maybe put some different wheels on it put an exhaust but this car from the factory i love the 19-inch forged wheels the styling is fantastic it doesn't need to be lowered and it could be a tiny bit louder but it honestly sounds really really good i love the analog gauges of course they're analog not much digitalized stuff back then we do have you know a digital readout for what gear we're in the mileage as well as the trip indicator i've also found it kind of interesting the gas gauge as well as the coolant temperature gauge have these very interesting lines it's almost kind of tricky to figure out where they are on the reading but i've determined at least i believe that the space depart lines shows you how much is left and then the white spot is where uh the fuel has depleted all right i'll let you listen to this black series a little more let me roll down the windows it's such a beautiful day out here now i will say the downshifts are nowhere near as crisp as a new double clutch transmission is they are well they happen pretty quickly in terms of the responsiveness from when you click the paddle to when it down shifts it doesn't have that whap to it and it doesn't have a crazy downshift noise maybe if i'm harder on the brakes now it's a little bit laggy and almost like it's trying to make it smooth and easier to drive i do wish it was a little more crisp but those up shifts are fantastic man the architecture of some of the homes around here is unbelievable i also like the fact they've integrated the latch for the glove box into a design element so as you can see on the side of the car we've got this silver stripe it's also here but that hides the latch for the glove box which is pretty cool little climate control vents here controls down here as well amg black series i love that a little extra storage and a cigarette lighter down there as well the car comes on p0 corsas so it's got a great amount of grip from the factory it's an excellent tire choice it's honestly really comfortable as well i do think while it might sound a little intense you could daily drive a clk 63 black series i think that would be an awesome card to daily drive i actually am really really enjoying this experience new they started at 135 000 used they've gone down a bit but not quite as much as you'd expect although it is a black series so obviously because of its rarity it's going to maintain its value and honestly i think for the rarity with only 350 being made in the united states it's a really good deal for the money i found some as low as 91 grand some of them were 110 130 there was one for kind of a crazy amount but for 92 to 100 grand this is a really really special car and i think with an exhaust it would be the perfect perfect setup special thanks to mercedes-benz for letting me review this clk black series here at pebble beach during monterey car week i hope you guys enjoyed today's video like always please browse the channel and subscribe i look
