**Early Bird Pricing Alert: Join Camp Cake**
Are you excited to dive into the world of holiday baking and decorating? Camp Cake is here, and we're offering early bird pricing for a limited time. This year's theme is all about fondant and creating stunning cakes that will make your friends and family green with envy. As one of our counselors, I'll be guiding you through the process of creating a show-stopping cake, and I'm thrilled to offer my exclusive holiday baking hat ebook absolutely free when you sign up for Camp Cake.
**Getting Started with Fondant**
We're starting off by working with fondant, a pliable sugar dough that can be molded and shaped into various forms. For this project, we'll be using the lightest shade of Aqua to create a beautiful gown. I roll out the fondant to an eighth of an inch thick and make sure it's big enough to drape over the entire cake. The exact color I used is available in the description below for those who want to replicate the look.
**Smoothing and Folding the Fondant**
The first thing I do with fondant is try to smooth out any air that remains between the fondant and the cake, and smooth away all of the folds in the fondant. However, this time around, I'm not doing that – I want to accentuate the folds in the fondant because it will make it look more like fabric. Working very gently, I pull the fondant away from the dress and create some more folds, making sure not to tear the fondant. The result is a beautiful, flowing gown that's perfect for our Barbie doll.
**Softening the Edges**
Once I've trimmed the edges of the fondant, I use a sharp pairing knife in a wavy pattern to give it natural flow around the dress. To soften the edges even further, I smooth them out with my fingertips and pinch them between my fingertip and my thumb to make them look thinner. If there are any cracks at the top of the skirt, I fill them in with some fondant paste made from Aqua fondant and water.
**Chilling and Preparing for Painting**
With the skirt complete, I pop the cake into the fridge to chill and prepare it for painting. This is where things get a little nervous – I've never actually painted an ombre before! But I'm confident in my skills, and with a bit of clear food-grade alcohol diluted with food coloring, I'm ready to create a stunning effect.
**Painting the Ombre Effect**
I begin by painting a darker line around the perimeter of the bottom of the gown using the same brush and clear food-grade alcohol. To create a lighter shade of that color, I dilute the paint again and apply it upwards, blending the colors together to create a seamless ombre effect. Once this layer is dry, I mix some Pearl luster with light blue Pearl luster and clear food-grade alcohol to make well-pearly paint.
**Adding Final Touches**
I use my pearl paint to add a touch of elegance to the gown, brushing it from top to bottom to create a beautiful, shimmering effect. Once this layer is dry, I go back and paint some more Pearl just at the top of her gown to perfect the ombre. With the gown complete, it's time to dress up our Barbie doll – I make her a gumpaste top and then wrap her legs in plastic wrap to make it food-safe.
**The Final Result**
Barbie is now ready to be dressed in her beautiful gown, which perfectly complements her stunning bodice. To ensure the fondant flows beautifully with the bodice, I use a wet paint brush to blend out the seams. And that's it – our Barbie doll is looking like a million bucks in this gorgeous holiday outfit.
