Restoring Furniture with Resin Marble (that glows!)

The Art of Experimentation: A Conversation Between Katelyn and Evan

In a unique and fascinating experiment, Katelyn and Evan poured resin into gloves filled with pigment to create intricate designs on their hands. The process was both creative and unpredictable, as the two artists worked together to push the boundaries of what is possible with this technique.

As they began the pour, Katelyn noted that "solid gray doesn't look nearly as good as the dirty pour gray." Evan agreed, stating that he thought his favorite element of the experiment was a small vein on one of their hands. Katelyn also appreciated the same feature, and the two shared a moment of excitement and discovery. However, the process wasn't without its challenges, as they struggled with the consistency of the resin.

"I don't know how I did it," Evan confessed, "Dang it, I just touched the little pile of gloves with resin hands, I was trying to keep these clean." Katelyn laughed at his admission, and the two joked about their fingers resembling alien hands. Despite the difficulties, they pressed on, determined to create something beautiful.

As they continued, Evan reserved a small amount of black pigment for further experimentation. He carefully poured it into the resin, creating intricate veins underneath that would show up in the next layer. However, this process was also fraught with risk, as he admitted that "it's like trying a new technique." Katelyn reassured him, saying "Maybe like a longer," and they worked together to achieve the desired effect.

In a surprising twist, Evan asked if he could test one of Katelyn's designs on his own hand. She agreed, and he carefully inserted a syringe into her black center bit. As he manipulated the resin, Katelyn wailed in surprise, but ultimately, their efforts paid off, and the experiment was deemed successful.

Their conversation took a somber turn when they realized that one of the designs had become too extreme. "That's weird," Evan said, "Okay, well hey, you know what? We'll let these cure and then we'll try our next layer." Katelyn interjected, saying "I don't know, it's not a good analogy," but they both agreed to move forward.

Throughout the experiment, Katelyn and Evan demonstrated their creativity, adaptability, and willingness to take risks. Their conversation was filled with laughter, excitement, and a deep appreciation for the process of experimentation. As they worked together, they pushed the boundaries of what is possible with resin pouring, creating unique and intricate designs that would be impossible to achieve without this technique.

The Experiment Continues

As they prepared to move on to their next layer, Katelyn and Evan couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what was to come. They had taken risks and pushed the boundaries of what is possible with resin pouring, and their results were truly unique.

"I don't know how I did it," Evan repeated, "Dang it, I just touched the little pile of gloves with resin hands, I was trying to keep these clean." Katelyn chuckled at his admission, and they both laughed about their fingers resembling alien hands. Despite the difficulties, they were determined to create something beautiful.

As they continued to work on their designs, Evan carefully added a small amount of color to one of Katelyn's pieces. "What expression?" he asked, marveling at the effect he had achieved. The music swelled, and for a moment, it seemed as though they were transported to another world.

ugly, kinda neat.I don't think that itimpacts the look of itin any negative waywhen it's light out.So I think it kind ofadds something nice. And I think withthe matte finishthat we're gonna doon the final piece,I think it couldlook pretty cool.So I think I'm downto do the white.I'm down, if it looksa little alien-y,I mean it's glowin, it's glowing.Like what do we expect?Yeah.Let's get our side tables.(whimpers)(snazzy music)So we took the tape offof these test pieces. And one thing we realizedis that it's sticky.EVAN: It's really sticky.KATELYN: So we cameup with a solutionto solve the sticky issue. So what we're doing is acombination of blue tape, plastic sheeting and foil tape.So we're gonna blue tape theplastic sheeting on first. And this serves two purposes:One, it prevents the aluminumfoil from leaving residue, and it also provides a dropprotection for our dressersso that we don't spillresin all over the place. So, hopefully.Well, drop protectionon the outside, but also, leak protectionfrom the insidebecause what we knowfrom these tester pieces, also, is resin doesleak down the side.Yeah, just a little bit. It's a lot simpler when whatyou're building is raw woodand you can just ifthere's any mistakes, you just kind of.Sand it.Yeah, exactly. But when you're working withlike a laminate like this, you can't, you justcan't sand things off.You don't know what'sunderneath there.Probably particle board.Yeah, there's probablyparticle board.(laughs)And we don't like that. But like. We're, once again, trying something forthe very first time. Will it work?I hope so.Only one way to find out.How do you feel about sandingour nice, semi-nice dressers. On one, aah!No, this is thepoint of no return!(Evan laughs)Ugh, okay,As wrong as thisfeels emotionally, physically, this feels right.KATELYN: Like grippier?Yeah, like smooth andslick and then grippierso that the resin canget into those groovesand really adhere. So we're making this anice long-lasting piece.(sand paper scrapes)So we're just gonna finish thisand then we'll do the resin.Do one, do one, it's cathartic.Oh, no I was, okay.(sand paper scrapes)It's littlechalkboard-y, you know? It's worse pushing.Pulling is better.(Evan laughs)You're evil. So, we decided to simplifyhow many mixes we're pouring. Can you say better wordswhile I'm doing this?Yeah, we're simplifying it downto just doing a white,a gray and a blackfor this first layer.I don't think we need toget any fancier than thatbecause what we realizedis it's really forgiving.Like the second layercovers a lot of mistakes.Wee.So I've done abouttwo of those now.All right, now for the grayI'm gonna do a littlebit of the whiteand then just atiny bit of black. You can always addmore darkening. So I'm gonna be, not chaos Evan.I am gonna be, what's theopposite of chaos Evan?Reserved Evan.Reserved Evan.Katelyn.I'm wanna be Katelyn today.Love, what's yourimpression of me?Um...\"Hi love\".Okay, that's pretty good.Wow, simple.I think that somethingthat's very you,is being bothered by thingsout of place or something? But it's hard to doan impression by it'cause it's more of a vibethan anything you say or do.It's more like,\"Hey, love, thesescrews on the counter,do you know what these are for?\"(laughs)Like my subtle way of saying, why are these randomscrews on the counter?I'm sure there's a reason. All right, I'm gonna startwith a little bit of whitefor the base, alittle bit of white.A little bit of gray.Just a tiny amountof this dark black. And then some more whites.Layer it.EVAN: And then we'll seewhat that looks like.I think I'm just gonna.Ooh, I like that.KATELYN: I like that.EVAN: I love the detailin there, wow, yeah.I might just do a few of these.I don't like that shape,it looks like a wishbone.KATELYN: It's up to you, baby.EVAN: Okay, I'm liking it,but I do want some more dark.KATELYN: Yeah.EVAN: So I'm just gonnakeep on adding dirty pours.'Cause I like howthis is coming out.KATELYN: Mm-Hm.(groans)EVAN: Oh boy.KATELYN: Oh boy. That looks nice!EVAN: That looks nice.I think I'm just gonna staysafe with these diagonals.I think I'm evengonna do just like a.KATELYN: A little partial?Yeah, right there. Now I'm just gonnado some thin pores, just around, youknow what I mean?Yeah.Yeah.Yeah, this probablywill be just enough.Whoops, I dripped.KATELYN: No!EVAN: It'll just becomepart of the floorand make the floor stronger.(Evan laughs)All right, this islooking heckin' nice.Uh, uh, uh.(upbeat music)I'm liking it.KATELYN: But it aint overall, it looks really good.EVAN: Yeah, I'm like, wow!I can be like a lot moretransparent on the top layerthan I thought, 'cause I'mactually digging this vibea lot more than Ithought, honestly.Who knows if it'sgonna mess up later. What do you think, call it?KATELYN: Yeah, Ithink you're good. That's awesome! My turn.I'm so excited. So I'm gonna do basicallythe same thing as Evan.'Cause these are set.EVAN: Yeah, I meanthe main thingthat's gonna be interestingis what artistic flaresare you gonna add? What angle are yougoing to do things at?I don't know, you're wild Katelyn.Wild and crazy. No I'm not.I mean sometimes.Okay, okay.I think you're cool.I didn't say I'm not cool.(Evan laughs)Rude.I guess I kinda feel likeI should do like opposite, like mirrored angles, slightly.EVAN: That could be fun.Doing a dirty pour cup?Doing a dirty pourcup, you know.EVAN: It's a little white, alittle gray, a little black.KATELYN: Yeah, again, you know.EVAN: I mean, this is like,I think it works pretty wellOoo!I love it, it's great!ThanksI love it, looks great.I think it's great.Ooh.KATELYN: I'm going out, Idid a little outward vein.Who is she?Who is she?EVAN: DJ Katelyn mixingresin in the club.(deep club music)I'm a live mixer.Have we told them about yourDJ name?DJ soft paws.(Evan laughs)(deep club music)And I'm also a catin this scenario.EVAN: I just like keep onthinking about you as a DJ now.(deep club music)Spittin' live beats. No, I'm not spitting beats,'cause I'm not rapping.I need a rapper name too.Maybe people can submit, stupid names for me.Katelyn's rapper name?Yeah.I'm just gonna do a couplemore like little touches. But I think all inall, I'm pretty happywith how it turned out.Am I done? I might be done.Wow.I might be pretty good.Honestly, this is one ofthe more simple resinprojects we've done, even though it'slike so complex,it's also kinda simple in a way.I think that's why I'm likequestioning, am I done?I'm used to havingto do so much more, but no I think,I think I'm good.I'm gonna leave it.It's looking good.I'm excited for layer two.Me too.So the tables still look great. We've thought aboutpainting more veins on here, but honestly, I'm a 100%happy with how much I have, and I actually don't thinkI wanna add any more.I already got some fine lines. So, I think it's ready forthe white and clear layer.I think so.Okay.Putting it on this side.Sorry, you get banished.KATELYN: I can still be in it.(Evan laughs)Okay, what you got here?So I'm gonna doanother big dirty pour. Are you trying tobe in the frame?Yeah.I'm part of this scene.EVAN: Are you part of the team? All right, I'm gonnado a big, dirty pour.We have more opaque white, more transparent whites, the glow powder whichis looking very yellow.KATELYN: Yep.And we even have alittle bit of graythat we're gonna add in thereand I'm just gonna wing itlike we always do.KATELYN: Yup.EVAN: And not get too stressed.KATELYN: Like we never do.Like we never do.Want some of that glow. All right, I'm justgonna top you up now.KATELYN: Okay.EVAN: Ooh, I'm so gladI added that gray in.KATELYN: Looks nice.EVAN: Looks like someonepeed in the resin also.KATELYN: The yellow?EVAN: The yellow.Okay.KATELYN: It'll spread out.I wonder what design yourglow powder is gonna make?EVAN: I don't know. But it's already looking nice, you can still see thelayer underneath it.KATELYN: Yes.But it is nice and subtle. But I do see the streaks ofthe different whites on top.I don't know, I mightjust juj it a little bitwith the heat gun.Yeah, and then we'll popbubbles and then I get to go.EVAN: Wow, that looks nice!KATELYN: It does look nice.It looks really nice.EVAN: It looks moresubtle but rich and deep.KATELYN: Yes, be gone.Be gone bubbles.Be gone!Okay, nah, I'm doingthe same thing.(music fast forward)Okay. There's the yellow.EVAN: There's the yellow.KATELYN: The price you pay tomake your nightstands glow.EVAN: I think it'sgonna be cool.KATELYN: I hope so.EVAN: Or it could looklike an alien something.KATELYN: You know,at this point, feel like there's not too muchlike creative control I have,I'm at the whim,Of the resin.Of the resin.EVAN: Yeah.Kinda how it is whenyou do dirty pour. Will we ruin ournice side tables?EVAN: No!They're gonna look so nice.KATELYN: We'll findout at the end.Cool, baby!EVAN: Cool, baby.Very exciting.Yeah, we'll just dothe same thing on mine. We'll give it a little,(mimics sprayer).Pop the bubbles.Yeah, and then I think likewhen we see you guys again,it's gonna befinal montage time.Final montage time.Well, we have one last, very, very exciting step.Oh, yeah!Oh, I'm excited.Do you have resin?Okay.(Evan giggles)(playful music)You ready to unwrap these?Yes.I wanna do it ina dramatic reveal. Are you ready?Yes.(tape rips)Wow!EVAN: Reveal one of many.KATELYN: Actually, whatI'm most curious aboutare two things:One, how un-smooth is thisedge, it's pretty un-smooth.EVAN: Oh yeah.KATELYN: But two, what arethese sides gonna look like?Like how much work arewe gonna have to do?EVAN: That's what I'm mostexcited and nervous about.(tape rips)Hey!KATELYN: Actually, that'smuch cleaner than I feared. That's a lot cleanerthan our test pieces.EVAN: That's really great. It's because we did...The double tape. The double tape.BOTH: Yeah.EVAN: And it's not sticky.Okay, so maybe we don't evenhave to paint the sides?(gasp)That'd be great.I don't think we need to,because that wasmy biggest worry.Yeah, on the frontthere are stilla few little nicksand stuff like that. That's true, but paintinga few little touch-upson the nicks of the paint.EVAN: We can do that. That's much moresimple than trying to,I don't even know whatwe were gonna have to doif it leaked and was all, lumpy.Okay, I think this is one ofour best resin top methods ever. One of our cleanest edges yet.Yes.Everyone (applauds).Thank you for beingwith us on this journey.Thank you.Let's clean up these edgeswith a router real quick. And then we're gonnado the fun partthat I'm so excitedabout, oh my gosh.Okay, yeah, we'll cleanit up first though. Why don't we just like ripit and like you can rip yoursand I'll rip mine and like.Okay.(upbeat music)Well, actually, can'twe just leave this for,why am I removing this?Oh yeah. Can't I just leave it for theround over and the sanding?(upbeat music)Time for the new part. We're gonna sand the resin, which we've donebefore out of necessityto like sand down arough edge or something. But we wanna make thewhole thing matte. We have a whole bunchof super extra qualitysanding things ranging from 800to 2,500 grit.(romantic music)Ultra, ultra fine.So we're gonna dosome experimentationsand see which onelooks the best.Oh, are we?I thought we werejust gonna go for it.That makes sense.I mean, we could just...We could, I don't know.I'm so excited tosee this matte.(upbeat music)Look at this.Super glossy, so matte! So, it's so muchmore like stone. One more sanding and then it'stime for the final reveal.(upbeat music)(quirky music)They're done! This might be oneof the classiest, nicest things we've ever made.I agree. And I was a little worriedthat it might look cheesyor too fake, you know?'Cause we don'talways go for classy.Sometimes we go for cheesyand we're good at that. But like classyis more difficultand these just lookso freaking good.Well, I think that there'sanother thing about thisthat really shows like astrength of DIY projects.I made my idealpurported marble. And anyone who doesa project like this,if you want it darker or morestreaky or whatever you want, you wanna add some like littlesparkly flakes in there.(sparkles chime)Whatever! You can do that.Plus, they glow!Yeah, let's check that out!Oh you do it, I'm comfortable.EVAN: Yeah, all ofthese lights are fake. It's in the middle of the night.Yeah, the window is fake.EVAN: Everything is fake.(laughs)KATELYN: We're realEVAN: We're real. Are you?Are you real?Now...Whoa!It totally glows. It totally glows. It totally glows.Oh my gosh. That, like if I.Like, significantly.EVAN: I put my phone on there,I can clearly see theoutline of my phone.Yeah.I can easily reach overand pick up my phone orwhatever else is on here.Mainly the phone.(laughs)Bring back the lies. Are any of our windows real? You'll never know. You'll never know.Well, baby. What a journeythis has been, hun.I'm very proud of us,we did a good job.We did a good job.Hope you enjoyed the videoand look forward to seeingyou in the next one.Bye!Bye!EVAN: Yeah.Thank goodness though.Oh, I almost sneezed.EVAN: Oh, no.\n"
