The Bizarre World of Google Assistant in Aloe: What You Need to Know
Well, it turns out that at least for some people Google's assistant in Google Aloe may be showing people your search history and doing so with attitude. With Google Aloe, you can summon the Google Assistant to perform searches, set reminders, and ask about weather, and a whole lot more. But what happens when Google isn't so secretive about what you've been searching for? According to Recode, that's a real problem in Aloe right now.
When you're in the middle of a chat with a friend on Aloe, the Google Assistant can help you find the best places to get pizza near you or plan a Meetup with your friend while you're in chat. Apparently, some people have been noticing that the Google assistant is responding to unrelated questions or even responding to answers to earlier questions, and this is definitely something you don't want your voice assistant to do.
A reporter at Recode gave a first-hand account of a bizarre interaction with the Google Assistant, which could have been a lot worse. The reporter was in the middle of a conversation with a friend when the friend asked the Google Assistant to identify itself. To everyone's surprise, the Google Assistant responded to the question with a link from the Harry Potter fan site Pottermore, which led to an excerpt from Harry Potter in the Order of the Phoenix.
At first glance, this response may seem like a random answer to a simple question. However, it was actually a search result related to a previous search that was made by the friend a few days earlier. This raises serious concerns about how Google's assistant is able to access and use personal data without users' knowledge or consent.
It's worth noting that the assistant's answer didn't come from anyone's search history since no Harry Potter-related websites were accessed by either user in the few days before the conversation. Moreover, the subject of Harry Potter wasn't even brought up until the assistant mentioned it. This incident was a lucky one, as the assistant only shared information related to a sensitive topic - albeit an innocuous one.
However, this incident highlights the potential risks of Google's assistant in Aloe. The assistant can relay sensitive information to other users without their permission, which is supposed to be handled with caution. For instance, if you were to ask the assistant what your name is, it will privately respond with "can I share this?" giving you the option to share this information with your friend or cancel the request.
Unfortunately, according to Recode, the assistant didn't ask for permission before sharing this Harry Potter information. This raises questions about how users' personal data is being handled and protected on Aloe. It's essential to consider whether this behavior concerns us and if we're even using Aloe at all.
The incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding how Google's assistant in Aloe works and what it can access. While the assistant may seem like a convenient tool, its ability to respond to unrelated questions or share sensitive information without permission can be unsettling.
