ASUS Zenwatch 2 First Look

An Update to the Zen Watch by Asus: Bringing a Different Design and Smaller Companion

As we take a closer look at the new update to the Zen watch by Asus, it's clear that this new iteration brings a somewhat different design and a smaller companion. The Zen watch 2 is heading to a number of markets in October and comes in two different configurations. A larger 49mm variant will be available, which is similar to the one we had last year with a 1.6 inch display. On the other hand, there's also a 45mm variant with a 1.45 inch display, both of which offer a unique look and feel that will appeal to different users.

The price for these two variants is quite affordable, with the larger version costing around $190 and the smaller one set at $170. Despite the change in size, everything underneath is still pretty much the same as before, offering the same type of performance you would expect from Android Wear. The Zen watch 2 comes equipped with a Snapdragon 400 processor, half a gig of RAM, 4 GB of storage, and water resistance at IP67 certification. This makes it suitable for users who don't require too much processing power, as it doesn't need to handle heavy tasks.

One of the standout features of the Zen watch 2 is its battery life. It boasts over 2 days of battery life, especially when considering the ambient operating mode charging. The Zen watch 2 will also supposedly be easier than before thanks to a magnetic connector that can get the watch to 50% power in just over 30 minutes. This makes it convenient for users who want to quickly charge their watch and get back to using it.

When it comes to design, the Zen watch 2 takes on a much different look compared to its predecessor. The smaller device is more suited to people with smaller wrists or those who prefer not to wear large faces. What I noticed most about the Zen watch 2 is that it has a somewhat thicker body. This is something that I wasn't exactly too happy about personally, as the sleek body of the original Zen watch did contour well to the ridge of the wrist.

The sleek design of the original Zen watch was one of its standout features, and I was really fond of how it looked with the strap. It seemed like the watch was catered specifically to fit a myriad of different wrist sizes. However, as is often the case this year, manufacturers have to create smaller versions to accommodate other users who may not want larger bodies on their wrists. In this case, it just seems that the girth has returned on the Zen watch 2 compared to its predecessor.

Despite the change in design, a myriad of different straps and finishes are available for both the new Zen watch and the other smartwatches at EA. These include gold colors, black colors, silver colors, leather straps, metal straps with deployment clasps, or the kind of strap that users were accustomed to from the original Zen watch. The larger variant will come with 22mm straps, which are easy to change through the lugs on the top and bottom. On the other hand, the smaller version of the Zen watch 2 comes with 18mm straps.

A companion app is also included with the Zen watch 2, offering quite a bit of customization options. One of these features is a watch face creator, which allows users to create a custom watch face that will then cater to their particular likings. The app itself will allow users to have Asus apps on top of Android Wear, some of which were available in this demo. It's also worth noting that the Zen watch 2 places a greater focus on fitness tracking compared to its predecessor or other Android wear devices.

In conclusion, the new update to the Zen watch by Asus brings a different design and a smaller companion that will appeal to users who want a more compact device. The price is quite affordable, making it accessible to those looking for luxury at a lower price point. The companion app offers customization options, including a watch face creator and integration with other Asus apps on top of Android Wear. Overall, this new iteration is definitely worth checking out, especially for users who want a smartwatch that offers a balance of style and functionality without breaking the bank.
