DIY Inspiration with David Bromstad - Guest Week - HGTV Handmade

Collaboration is Key to Creativity and Organization

When it comes to creativity and organization, having a good collaborator can make all the difference. For Julia, her partner with great taste, collaboration is her favorite thing in the world. She explains that working together with others sparks new ideas and inspires her to try new things. This is evident in their home decor, which has become stronger and stronger over time as they continue to work together.

Julia's approach to organization is also noteworthy. As a visual person, she likes to have things right in front of her. She uses cut-out magazine clippings or prints out images and glues them into binders or books. This allows her to browse through her ideas easily and get inspiration from them. She even has multiple boards on Pinterest, but also uses hard copy materials like a binder with organized categories for different types of projects.

Organization is indeed a challenge for creative minds. For Julia, she finds that using technology helps her stay organized. She uses Pinterest, Google Docs, and other tools to keep track of her ideas and to-do lists. This allows her to access everything she needs from one place. She also has a bulletin board in her craft closet where she can pin up inspirational images and get excited about new projects.

In contrast, David approaches organization differently. He likes to have everything on his computer, organized by category. He uses a Google Doc for his to-do list and other random lists. Whenever he has an idea, he adds it to the list, and if he's stuck again, he can look back at her list of fully formed ideas.

Inspiration is also an important part of their creative process. Both Julia and David get inspiration from various sources, including their subscribers on YouTube. They value the comments and emails they receive from viewers, who often leave them with new ideas and suggestions. For Julia, she gets inspiration from Bethany Moda's videos, which are just beautiful and fun to watch. She also appreciates KL's Secret Life of a Crafty Person, and of course, David doesn't need to say it - he loves Debbie's Design Diary.

For both Julia and David, collaboration is key to their creative process. They inspire each other, share ideas, and work together to create something beautiful. Whether they're working on a design project or just browsing through their binders and Pinterest boards, they both know that having someone to collaborate with makes all the difference. In fact, David even credits his first inspiration as coming from a commenter and viewer of her videos.

Finally, inspiration can be found in unexpected places. For Julia, she draws inspiration from Philippa Stark, who combines elegance with humor to create unique designs. This is evident in Julia's home decor, which has a similar sensibility - beautiful yet quirky, with a touch of humor. Whatever the source of inspiration, both Julia and David are grateful for the creative process that brings them together.

As we conclude our guest week on HGTV Handmade, we want to thank our guests for sharing their insights and inspiration. From collaboration to organization, they've shown us that creativity is all about working with others and finding inspiration in unexpected places. We can't wait to see what David has in store for us next - and of course, we'll be back with more guest weeks, threadbanger, Debbie's Design Diary, and Mr. Kate. Don't miss out on the fun!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi everyone Welcome to our guest week here on HGTV handmade this entire week we have tons of collabs with some really amazing designers that we are so excited to have here on the channel today our special guest is David bromstead winner of Design Star all over HGTV we love him I love thank you for being here oh my God it's my pleasure great to beet her and of course we have Meg and Julia from handmade who you all know and love hey guys hi today we're going to be talking about one of our most asked questions ever which is where do we get all of our inspiration David I'm going to ask you first you've designed shoes you have a TV show sets Interiors Furniture where do you get all of that inspiration really inspired by my client that's where my true inspiration comes because I'm all over the place when it comes to design I you can definitely tell David bromad room when you see it but to actually describe it is much more difficult because I like to morph to my clients so I take whatever my client likes and I just put my stamp on it so that's where I get my inspiration but other than that from everything literally I can walk down like the ugliest Street and see something so beautiful in a leaf or a piece of garbage and be like o cool color combination you know so it comes everywhere I mean I pay attention to Fashion I I know what's coming down the runway only because now I'm doing a women's shoe line which is fantastic so you have to stay above Trends even over Interiors which is really exciting I feel you David I feel like I can find inspiration anywhere everywhere like walking down the street I said the same thing like I see the way that the light hits a certain thing and I'm just like oh that could be something really rad for a textile or movies I love HTV magazine and my old Domino magazine archive fashion sometimes you'll see an outfit and you just want to like see that breeds into a room or there's a shot from The Graduate that I just like love the way that the stripes mix with the greens so you can just sort of find it everywhere I think the trick is actually organizing the ideas and executing them like I have a bajillion ideas but like bringing them to fruition is the real challenge for me Absolut so creative brain you know exactly I can get lost in Pinterest for hours it is just oh my goodness pin and pin and pin and it just neverend exactly yeah I definitely get my inspiration from the usual places like Pinterest and magazines and people watching but I think the number one one place that I find my inspiration is definitely window shopping I started creating jewelry because I was a broke college student and I couldn't afford the stuff that I was seeing in stores so instead of buying the stuff that I saw in a retail store I would head to the craft store and uh get the materials to make it myself so that's probably my number one source of inspiration is uh being broke and loving jewelry Hard Knocks pay off well I think sometimes a lot of your inspiration comes through um those boundaries as when if you have the entire world ahead of you what do you like there's no way to pick where you want to go but if you have so many different um boundaries that like you can really only go one way you have to find a way to be more creative within that exactly limitation is the source of all creativity I feel definitely absolutely beautiful thank you I should put it make a t-shirt sticker yeah well one of the best things that you did on Design Star was with the supplies from a pet store I mean and I think that's like such a great example of like you just can't limit yourself you just be like okay if I have three things I'm going to figure out a way to like make these three things work in some kind of individual unique way you know so yeah I was always broke until I got onto television of course and I was barely making ends me but I'd go into my studio and I'd be like I look at all these you know pieces of wood and MDF and I'm like what can I build out of nothing and it was just so fun you know I didn't have a lot of money but I spent that money doing creative things and uh the more I pushed myself the better I got and here I am today so personally when I ever I really need inspiration I will always just look at Pinterest there's just so much there but what I like to do is look for a project that I can really make my own you know not just copy it directly but think how can I change the colors the structure even the medium that this is in I think that's just such a rich new way to find tons of inspiration everywhere speaking of which David I have seen probably almost every episode of Color Splash and every single room just comes out beautiful can you tell us about how you end up doing that you know obviously it's a it's a team effort I am a collaborative artist I love love love working with other people I find that you you know I come up with the grand ideas but then they come up with ideas and they come up with ideas and it morphs into something really beautiful and really amazing um the first two seasons of Color Splash I had Claire who was the most she was amazing but I didn't utilize her at all I was a control freak I was because I'm used to doing everything by myself but right when I started collaborating with her she has such great and amazing different taste the rooms just get stronger and stronger and stronger and now I love to collaborate with other people it's my favorite thing in the world so Julia with all of this inspiration all around you how you keep it organized well I'm a very visual person and I like to have things right in front of me so I'll either cut out magazine clippings or print things out and then glue them into a binder or a book it's kind of like the old school version of Pinterest but Pinterest before there was P it's just nice to be able to actually flip through it instead of have it in your phone I have so many boards and so many pins that things can get lost in there and when I have it right there in front of me it's a lot easier to kind of look at and get inspired by it's really fun to actually use your hands you know even before doing the craft project exactly yeah organization is the question isn't it like I find that that is a a huge challenge to like a right brain creative brain person um I doo use Pinterest um but I also do really like hard copy I have a binder as well with a bunch of ideas and I have it like organized by you know color texture rooms furniture and stuff like that just give some good ideas um and I also have a bulletin board on the indoor on the inside of the door of my craft closet and so I can just like put up some in inspirational images stff like that that just spark ideas and get me excited so that's helpful I do have so many different projects going on that I have to have everything on on my computer and I put everything on my desktop and I organize each of those pictures cuz a lot of things I can't post to Pinterest because they're secret projects so that's that's where I I love Pinterest I'm on there but I can't you can do those secret boards but I have too many secret boards if they have like unlimited I would be on there all completely so I keep mine always on my computer on my desktop so it's easy access yeah I'm kind of like you David I like to keep everything on my computer all in one place I have this Google doc where I keep my to-do list and also just other random lists like lists of craft projects whenever I have an idea I'll just put it on that list and then if I ever am stuck another week I can just look back on it and have a list of fully formed ideas they're waiting for me organized freak I love it so I think we're going to wrap this up by just throwing out some names of people who Inspire us and if you don't know who any of them are just write it down look it up and we promise that you will love them just as much as we do so Meg do you want to start David freaking bromstead oh stop Kelly I'm sorry um definitely Kelly Worster and Emily Henderson all fantastic designers well thanks you're welcome thank you I actually get a lot of inspiration from my subscribers on my YouTube channel they always leave such amazing comments I have subscribers from all over the world all different ages and a lot of them will send me emails and say hey can you make this and it's something I've never heard of before so they're a big source of inspiration for me that's very cool love that how about you I also get some inspiration from my subscribers sometimes people will leave a comment of a craft project and be like oh yeah I could totally make that besides that on YouTube I love Bethany Moda I think she is just the way she shoots her videos just beautiful I love KL secret life of a bionerd she's so great and of course D BR you don't have to say it just I not even like whenever anybody ask me about my design Inspirations I'm just like David fron said thank you very much that's that's a huge compliment coming from you guys why don't know why you did rewind cut I my first inspiration aren't you a commenter and a viewer of her videos she clearly includes you in there David giving away that's awesome that's awesome my biggest inspiration is definitely phip Stark he has a sensibility that is very expensive looking but also very humorous just combines really weird things together and it makes you smile and laugh and you're like but it's so gorgeous the same time so that's where I get my inspiration so that wraps up our first video from our guest week here on HGTV handmade make sure you subscribe for all of the rest of them we have threadbanger we have Debbie's design diary we have Mr Kate it's going to be really awesome and of course David is coming back so you don't want to miss that so thank you guys so much for watching and we will see you guys next time bye bye PAhi everyone
