Hyundai i30 (Elantra GT) review - better than a VW Golf

**The Hyundai i30: A Fairly Average Car with Some Surprises**

In this review, we put the new Hyundai i30 to the test to see how it performs on both urban and motorway roads. The car's design is fairly average, but its light steering and decent turning circle make it suitable for navigating tight city streets. However, the reviewer notes that while it's fine for doing U-turns and going around mini roundabouts, the car can be a bit slow in certain situations.

**Motorway Driving: A Mixed Bag**

When put to the test on the motorway, the i30's performance is decent, but not outstanding. The car takes a while to reach its top speed of 70mph, but once there, it holds steady. However, as the engine revs increase towards the top of the range, it starts to get a bit rough. But overall, the reviewer concludes that the i30's motorway driving experience is pretty average.

One feature that's notable on the i30 is its automatic cruise control system. The reviewer finds it easy to use and highly effective in keeping them at a safe distance from traffic, as well as steering to keep them in lane. However, they do note that the car lacks a radar system, which is essential for fully autonomous driving. Without this feature, the i30 feels incomplete.

**A Somewhat Disappointing Motorway Experience**

The reviewer's disappointment with the i30's lack of radar comes from their experience on the motorway. While the automatic cruise control and steering systems work well, the car's inability to maintain a safe distance without relying on human input makes it feel like it's not fully autonomous. This oversight is notable, given that the i30 does have other advanced safety features, such as collision warning.

**A Decent Motorway Experience with Some Caveats**

Despite its limitations, the reviewer finds the i30's motorway driving experience to be decent, if not particularly exciting. They note that there's a bit of wind noise from around 60mph onwards, but it's nothing too out of the ordinary. However, they do mention some tyre noise, which can detract from the overall comfort of the ride.

**Economy and Comfort**

One positive aspect of the i30 is its economy, with an impressive 47.5mpg on the combined cycle. The reviewer also notes that the seats are pretty comfortable, making it suitable for long journeys.

**Driving on Country Roads: A Surprise in Sport Mode**

In a surprise twist, the reviewer puts the i30 into sport mode to test how it handles on country roads. To their delight, the car grips well and handles corners with ease, thanks to its responsive throttle response and smooth suspension. The auto-blipping of the throttle when downshifting is also a welcome feature.

**A Good Car with Some Room for Improvement**

Overall, the Hyundai i30 feels like a good car that's just missing some key features to make it truly exceptional. While it has some impressive safety features and comfortable seats, its lack of radar and limited motorway performance hold it back from being truly great. However, its decent economy and sporty handling on country roads make it worth considering for those in the market for a new car.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the new hyundai i30 and it's like a couple of balls a vanilla ice cream you see it's nice enough but there are more exciting choices out there like a mazda 3 or a say at leon that's why hyundai has tweaked this car quite significantly and i'll go into full details about all the changes in this video and tell you if it's any good one they haven't changed though is that this car is value for money so it starts from just under twenty one thousand pounds you can save an average of two and a half thousand pounds off on through car wow in fact if you click on the pop out banner up there you can get a call out to see how much money you can save on a new car you'd rather do that after you've watched this video simply google help me car wow and my team and i will help you choose the right car for you and get it for a fair price from one of our trusted dealers buying a new car then head to car wow and my team will help you find your next car at a fair price car wow your one-stop car buying comparison site let's start this video off by talking about the i-30s design so hyundai's changed the rear bumper they've given it new led tail lights though on the entry-level car you just get normal headlights no leds all cars do get a roof spoiler though for a sporty look a lot of wheel designs start at 16 inches and then move up to 18 for the top of the range car and look at this little badge here says 48v more on that later try to continue excitement now actually at the front this car is pretty exciting it's got a whole new front bumper and a new grille design and the design of that is what i would imagine the gates to a palace in seoul would look like you might be looking down here again wait there is that a fake vent matthew well no actually it's not it's a real vent that helps smooth air flow over the wheels for improved aerodynamics the design of the lights are new as well they look sleeker than before and once again on all but the entry level model they're leds it's not bad the front end of this actually hopefully hyundai has changed the interior because on the old version it was a bit boring let's have a look now it does look rather similar but there are some key changes so i'm gonna start with ones which you might not notice you get some new vent designs you also get some new seat coverings with a fabric and a leatherette it's actually quite nice big standout feature though is the new infotainment system or but the entry-level car gets this big 10 inch screen the inch level actually has an 18 screen which looks like this and this screen is actually fairly nice touch screen easy to use you've got some shortcut buttons there which is good it's quite easy to navigate big thing is though you've got apple carplay and android auto so you're just gonna use those through there and it's a decent screen like i say though is a bit plonked on top of the dash though that does mean you're not looking down trying to see what's going on i like the fact that hyundai hasn't been tempted to integrate the climate controls through the screen you still got proper buttons down here which is great i'm just going to turn it off so it doesn't make a racket on my microphone another update is this digital driver's display well i say digital drivers display you still get an analog rev counter and then your fuel and temperature gauges so just made it full screen now you don't get this on the entry-level car it's a smaller screen yet again but every other model does have it and it does have a bit of information for you like your navigation directions things like your driving assist and safety features and your trick computer it's fine it's not that comprehensive but it's okay some other changes include the interior shrink collar you can now get it in a gray rather than just a black as before and the actual interior design itself is rather similar to before what should i say almost exactly the same which means it is rather ah you got soft touch materials on the dash and on the door tops which is nice and these bits in here are soft enough and it's mainly robust just this is a bit wobbly if you give it a wiggle and the materials down here a bit scratchy it's not terrible though it's fine and one of the things i like about this car the stalks are really nicely damp it feels expensive the buttons they're quite nicely damp they feel expensive-ish the driving position is good you've got lots of adjustment in the steering wheel which is great and plenty in the seat as well so you should be able to get comfy no matter what and there's enough space here even if you're tall in the front you're gonna have loads of headroom absolutely fine storage is good as well so glove box is average but the door bins look a humongous i just want to check this out because underneath here you have two cupholders will they fit a flask oh yeah they will and underneath here you've got some more storage and a 12 volt socket and of course this is your armrest which you can move forward if you need under here you've got another storage area here which is ideal for your mobile phone because on this car it's got a wireless charging pad that's really handy look it's charging now but if you don't have that facility on your phone you've also got a usb input there and a normal 12 volt as well there's another storage area you could use there for your phone if you wanted to fairly practical here in the front let's check out those back seats now i've got this front seat in my normal driving position let's see what the legroom is like knee room that's pretty good headroom that's even better people over six foot will be fine in the back of this car my only complaint really in terms of comfort is the fact that the actual mount for the front seats eaten the foot well so your feet feel a little bit cramped it's a bit of a let down what shame because everything else is pretty decent look at this you've got an armrest with some cupholders and they don't get in the way even though they're not covered when you put your arm down there i should show you this actually will it fit the flask it's all about the flash today and look you've got some through loading there though i'm not sure what you're going to fit through that little gap while we're talking about practicality let's just quickly move on to the door bins which are quite large yeah you've got some nettage there there is something missing from the back of this car there's no usb or 12 volt socket so kids won't be able to charge their mobile devices which means they'll have to look at the windows to keep themselves entertained at least the windows are big here in the back and you've got an extra little window here which helps make it even lighter what happens if you need to carry three people at once well the central seat is quite narrow and it's raised up a little bit so it's not the comfiest and the body of this car isn't the widest so it is a bit of a squeeze if you're trying to fit three adults in here at least there isn't a massive hump in the floor but once again those small foot wells do cause a little bit of a problem you're not gonna be carrying three adults in the back that often maybe kids in fact that brings me on to child seats if you want to fit a child sitting in the back of this car it's actually pretty easy the rear doors open nice and wide there's plenty of space back here the ice fix anchor points have little covers that you just push past which is great unfortunately though the actual location of the anchor points is quite hard to find so it's a bit of a fiddle locking it into place but once you've done that it's absolutely fine because there's enough room back here that you don't really have to move the front passenger seat forward even for those bulky rear facing seats right let's check out the boot see if the practical theme can continue there so one of the slight problems with this car is that there is a bit of a load lip to lift stuff over it doesn't matter for me because this is empty but if it was full of lead or depleted uranium that would have been harder than it needed to be having said that though the boot itself is quite a decent size and it's a square shape you've got 395 liters of low capacity in there 15 liters more than a volkswagen golf in fact you can squeeze six of these in this car's boots and only get five of them in the volkswagen golf so volkswagen of yours that's just on behalf of hindi anyway there's some useful features in this car's boots such as tie down points there you've got a little hooky there to hang things off 12 volt socket some storage underneath here and a little bit of storage area here if you need to carry really long or big items fold down the rear seats quite easy to do from here slight problem is that you do have a bit of a ridge between the boot floor and the seat backs but there's a little ramp to help you slide things up that like i'll show you so it doesn't matter so much very practical this car it's not quite as practical though as a skoda octavia and if you click on the pop out banner the top right hand corner of the screen you can see my full in-depth video review of that car and in fact that brings me on to five or nine things about the hinda i30 this car has three driving modes there's normal there's sport and there's eco let's say you like driving around normal however whenever you turn the car off and then you start it again not only does it beep at you like that shut up it always defaults to starting in eco mode who wants to drive around in eco mode pointless because there's no false load floor that you can raise up there's nowhere to store the load cover underneath to protect it if you're carrying things in the car so if you like stuff on top of that it might end up damaging it you know that means i might as well just get the damaging over and done with right from the get-go by making it fly oh dear it's a bit rubbish the way android auto doesn't fill the full screen and they try and make up for it by having this like android auto graphic there i bet apple carplay is full screen this vent doesn't move left to right very much so it's hard to send the actual airflow exactly where you want it there is a slight problem with having this cup holder so close to the gear selector it's this watch oh oh oh oh it's in the wind thankfully this car has plenty of cool features to help make up for all this here's five you get soft ups material on the top of the rear doors here in the i-30 and the volkswagen golf this would be hard nasty scratchy brittle plastic so it's another volkswagen volkswagen hyundai has given this car something called an intelligent manual transmission so when you're driving along and you lift off the accelerator it decouples the gearbox from the engine to help save fuel being a hyundai you get a five year warranty which is really useful to have there's this little guide for the rear seat belts so they don't snag on the back seats when you fold them down hallelujah for that ion dies introduce something called blue link and you basically get over the air live traffic updates and services and you've also got cloud-based voice control system for the infotainment it also includes an app your mobile phone so you can do things like check where you lift your car you can also see how much fuel you've got in it and the tire pressures all remotely let's talk about the engines and that brings me back to that 48 v badge on the side because it stands for 48 volts because all versions of this high-end i30 get 48 volt mild hybrid technology so you have a little electric motor that gives the engine a boost when you're pulling away and it helps save fuel now there's three engine choices this three cylinder turbo petrol it's one liter got 120 horsepower and it has not 60 in just over 11 seconds then there's a 1.5 liter four-cylinder turbo petrol which can do not 60 in under 9 seconds because it puts out 160 horsepower then there's a diesel which has 136 horsepower and do not 60 in just over 10 seconds now all engines drive the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox though you can get a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox as a 1200 pound option so which version of the hyundai i30 should he go for well i've actually configured my favorite trim level and engine choice of the i30 and i've got an offer back from a car wow dealer if you want to see which car that is exactly and the saving i've got on it click on the pop out banner up there to go check it out now let's see what this hyundai i30 is like to drive starting off with in town the first thing i can confirm is that the suspension is nice and soft so you don't really feel the bumps however you can hear them the suspension makes a bit of a noise it's almost like a distant drumming sound as you go over a bump the gear shift it's a little bit notchy and not in a good kind of engaging mechanical way just plain notchy the clutch is a bit weird as well the biting point is really high but the clutch is very soft so you're not entirely sure of the bite point whether you're there or not i'm not so keen on that brakes quite sensitive but not grabby that's fine i don't mind the brakes at all visibility is all right the view out of the back is pretty restricted which does just hamper things if you're trying to like park or stuff maneuverability is alright though light steering and a decent turning circle means that it's fine for doing u-turns and going around those mini roundabouts you suddenly change your mind and want to go in a different direction overall i'd say this car is fairly average in town all right let's see what this little hind i30 is like to drive on the motorway just entering the slip road now we're doing 30 miles an hour i'm going to accelerate from 35 miles an hour let's go up to 70. oh that's in third gear it took a while it's not the slowest and the engine does start to get a bit rough as you rev it towards the top of the rev range but it's not too bad right we're in six now i'm going to engage the automatic cruise control it's very easy to do just press one button then another button up to set my speed and we're in and then i just press this button for the auto steer function on some cars it's really confusing you don't know the combination of the buttons on this it's bang on now i've got a radar keeping me a safe distance from the car or should it be a truck in front of me i've got it actively steering to keep me in lane and look i'm gonna hold the steering wheel very lightly just to prove the point yes it is just hooking it up nicely to the center of the lane that is good i've just noticed something you know i said it's using a radar to keep me a safe distance it's not right that's interesting see i thought this car would have the radar system which will keep you safe distance from the car in front it only has the steering assist which is an oversight you absolutely need that radar as well otherwise you're having to break and accelerate yourself and it just means it's not fully automatic hyundai you missed a trick what are you doing i'm really disappointed that hyundai hasn't done that they've obviously got the radar and the sensors because it had the collision warning anyway the rest of the driving experience on the motorway is pretty decent noticing a little bit of wind noise from around here but it's not too bad in fact it's average really i think in terms of wind noise but then there's a tyre noise which you do get a little bit of i don't think it's quite as quiet to travel in as a volkswagen golf in fact if you click on the pop-up banner up there you can watch my full in-depth video review of that car right one last thing to check the economy this car is doing 47.5 miles per gallon that's really good impressed by that also these seats are pretty comfy you know five long journeys i think overall this car is average on the motorway finally let's see what this car is like on a country road i'm gonna do something the most bars of this car will never do and that's press the drive mode to put the car into sport settings so it's added a bit more weight to the steering and sharpen the throttle response though i can't tell one thing i can tell though is that that clutch is really noticeably bad now i'm trying to change gear quickly it like causes the car to jolt as you change up there it's not great i don't like that this car doesn't like to be hustled though actually it's going around corners pretty well the suspension's doing a good job of soaking up the rubbish surface i'm driving on i've just spotted something in sports mode when you change down the gear it auto blips the throttle like you're healing towing like a rally driver so that your engine speed matches your wheel speed perfectly i was not expecting that i was also not expecting it to grip quite so well in the turns it's actually pretty decent on a twisty road this not quite as much fun as a ford focus which incidentally if you want to see my in-depth video review of you can click on the pop-up banner up there but still it's better than i thought those still let's say average there's a theme isn't that there's a theme here so then what's my final verdict on the new hyundai i30 should you avoid it should you consider it should you shortlist it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well i reckon you should consider the i30 it is a good car it's just a little bit i hope you all enjoyed the video if you did please give it a like now if you'd like to see my in-depth video review of the kia seed click there or click there to watch my video of a say it layer alternatively you can click on that box there because what i've done is configured a competitor to this car and got a great deal on it so click on that box to see what see what this little hind i30 is like to drive on the motorway just entering the slip road now we're doing 30 miles an hour i'm going to accelerate from 35 miles an hour let's go up to 70. oh that's in third gear it took a while it's not the slowest and the engine does start to get a bit rough as you rev it towards the top of the rev range but it's not too bad right we're in six now i'm going to engage the automatic cruise control it's very easy to do just press one button then another button up to set my speed and we're in and then i just press this button for the auto steer function on some cars it's really confusing you don't know the combination of the buttons on this it's bang on now i've got a radar keeping me a safe distance from the car or should it be a truck in front of me i've got it actively steering to keep me in lane and look i'm gonna hold the steering wheel very lightly just to prove the point yes it is just hooking it up nicely to the center of the lane that is good i've just noticed something you know i said it's using a radar to keep me a safe distance it's not right that's interesting see i thought this car would have the radar system which will keep you safe distance from the car in front it only has the steering assist which is an oversight you absolutely need that radar as well otherwise you're having to break and accelerate yourself and it just means it's not fully automatic hyundai you missed a trick what are you doing i'm really disappointed that hyundai hasn't done that they've obviously got the radar and the sensors because it had the collision warning anyway the rest of the driving experience on the motorway is pretty decent noticing a little bit of wind noise from around here but it's not too bad in fact it's average really i think in terms of wind noise but then there's a tyre noise which you do get a little bit of i don't think it's quite as quiet to travel in as a volkswagen golf in fact if you click on the pop-up banner up there you can watch my full in-depth video review of that car right one last thing to check the economy this car is doing 47.5 miles per gallon that's really good impressed by that also these seats are pretty comfy you know five long journeys i think overall this car is average on the motorway finally let's see what this car is like on a country road i'm gonna do something the most bars of this car will never do and that's press the drive mode to put the car into sport settings so it's added a bit more weight to the steering and sharpen the throttle response though i can't tell one thing i can tell though is that that clutch is really noticeably bad now i'm trying to change gear quickly it like causes the car to jolt as you change up there it's not great i don't like that this car doesn't like to be hustled though actually it's going around corners pretty well the suspension's doing a good job of soaking up the rubbish surface i'm driving on i've just spotted something in sports mode when you change down the gear it auto blips the throttle like you're healing towing like a rally driver so that your engine speed matches your wheel speed perfectly i was not expecting that i was also not expecting it to grip quite so well in the turns it's actually pretty decent on a twisty road this not quite as much fun as a ford focus which incidentally if you want to see my in-depth video review of you can click on the pop-up banner up there but still it's better than i thought those still let's say average there's a theme isn't that there's a theme here so then what's my final verdict on the new hyundai i30 should you avoid it should you consider it should you shortlist it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well i reckon you should consider the i30 it is a good car it's just a little bit i hope you all enjoyed the video if you did please give it a like now if you'd like to see my in-depth video review of the kia seed click there or click there to watch my video of a say it layer alternatively you can click on that box there because what i've done is configured a competitor to this car and got a great deal on it so click on that box to see what it is and the saving you can make\n"
