We're Back in the Garden: A Refreshing Summer Mojito Recipe

We're back in the garden again and it's actually one of the first official days of summer, which means one thing needs a few things, but one thing it does mean is berries are in town. We got a nice blueberry bush that's a few years old, and this year it just happened to produce like crazy. This thing is hanging right now with ripe blueberries, beginning a summer. I'm always craving mojitos - they're one of my favorite things to make when the ingredients are grown fresh.

All you really need for a great mojito is some nice mint, which you can get at the supermarket. We have some grown fresh here, and I like adding some fruit to it. Let's add some blueberries because that's what we have, but I've tried it with pineapples, watermelon, peaches - it's all delicious. So whatever you got grown fresh or in the supermarket, grab that attitude! The first step in making a mojito is to pick a little mint. You can just pick it at the bottom and the more mint the merrier, it's really delicious in these things. It really adds that fresh kick that makes mojitos special.

Take it by the top and just sort of peel it down right into your glass. I'm gonna add a little more, a few more sprigs of mint, really like that. The tea is fresh, oh cool - we got our man! Next key ingredient is some fresh lime. Give it a roll, get the juices flowing, and just cut it into some sections real nice and easy baby, two nice pieces of lime throw those in.

Then of course, your fresh fruit. Let's pick some of these blueberries, the darker ones are gonna be more ripe, so we got to get those off the tree first. We have a lot of blueberries what a delicious time in life! Most mojito recipes call for sugar but why I add that stuff when you can add some pure honey? We're using fresh ingredients, you might as well use that it's gonna work perfectly. Add a little bit of sweetness, take a muddle stick or spoon or fork or anything and just give it a nice mash.

This is really important step right here - you're infusing all of the flavors, all of that lime citrus and the aroma of the mint is gonna fuse together, we're creating this insane juice. It's like the freshest simple syrup you could ever make, it's just this beautiful, beautiful well, it's like a sweet aromatic fruit juice. And that's the base of your mojito when you have something that looks like that to start with, you're in good shape - you can't really go wrong past the heck!

Now we're muddled up and ready to add our next ingredient - the rum! It's your classic alcohol for mojitos but even some tequila and this would be fantastic. You could use vodka if you want, really go as heavy as you want on this, why not summer? Add some ice and then top it off with a little club soda. This is really just gonna smooth it out at a little carbonation - you can skip this so you can just add water if you don't have it.

Wow! Give it a little stir, let's use the back of that nice there and there you go, simple as that. We have a garden fresh blueberry mojito that's strong and delicious and it's summer - so you can't get better than that!
