Are Ford sedans REALLY disappearing 2018 Mazda6 _ Talking Cars with Consumer Reports #149

want to be sure that you're doing it and not having a false positive off all situation right so there's reasons for from the engineering standpoint but to the point is if if they have they've developed the system they know how to do it and it does prevent crashes and save lives you know just come on well and Jen you know one of the things particularly through your your side of the of your workload you know one will bring you to a stop like he was talking about but there is a difference in high speed and low speed ATB right so I think that's part of it is is kind of this kind of steps into the you know the delivery of aiibi so that one consumers aren't getting a perception that it's going to stop them from all speeds yes the difference you know these low speed systems they will typically bring you to a stop as this person experienced but they can't do that from from highway speeds right they're gonna break they're gonna help reduce the energy of the impact but they're not necessarily gonna stop so they want to make it clear to consumers as we've been talking about what they're getting and you know some of the ratings third parties you know the IHS very clearly says it's superior at 25 miles per hour so there's a little bit perhaps of implementing to the tests that are current at this time and so and we're encouraging manufacturers by making it part of our rating score right you know manufacturers good certain number of points we maybe won't give that Oh out but right and we're doing we're distinguishing the ones that operate at highways highways and the ones that you know maybe will operate at twenty five right and I think you'll see more and more again the next step is to go to the higher speeds yeah and it's and these are features that people are asking for yep safety is absolutely is important to to consumer reports but customers going to dealers asking for it finally we've got a question about an older vehicle that that honestly we liked here when we didn't you know put it through testing but a lot of Consumer Reports employees actually went out and bought with their own money and kept it for a long time I love my Mazda 5 but it's no longer available in the United States it's boxy nature made it versatile for hauling stuff and I'll average about 25 miles per gallon in my 2012 model it's fun to drive since it's a Mazda yeah what do I replace it with that is also versatile and fun to drive but as modern safety features and improve fuel economy is there a spiritual successor to the Mazda 5 so Jake Jen Toyota rav4 CRV I don't think so and I'm you know I look at the words we use tremendously practical and underappreciated gem these are the words we wrote but like things like that Mazda 5 kia rondo remarkably practical they just for flex when I go back to my Ford Flex that I love yep yeah and they just they're just not big enough ears which is crazy because if you go overseas you go to Japan or you go to what you're right it's like it's everyone's driving one of these things like little micro bands actually called it you know it's a micro van and it was great sliding doors on the side like you talked about three rows of two seats which was novel so you know it's really kind of a four-seater with without jump seats you know I had we mechanic had one for his family and they put like a still has his Mazda fire yeah you know yeah so what are we gonna tell we get another Mazda I mean I would go cx-5 I know it's an SUV but the way the cx-5 drives it doesn't drive like a rav4 or a CRV I mean it's live sport it's a too fun vehicle it could be had in front will drive and you could get the front wheel drive so you know he does he's lived with the front-wheel drive mazda 5 for a while right I do think there he's gonna be just I think that's the right answer I do but I do think they're gonna have a transition and maybe even a little disappointment about visibility and access and all of that that Mazda 5 offered that the cx-5 just does not so there you it save your mazda5 in the backyard fun driving and get a cx-5 to have a modern safety and dual anthony vehicle

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enboards announce that they're done with making any sedans is that really the case plus we talk about the mazda6 that we just added to our fleet and what vehicle would be the spiritual successor to the Mazda 5 that and other viewer questions next on talking cars hi everybody and welcome to another episode talking cars with Consumer Reports I'm John linka I'm Jake Fisher I'm Jennifer Stafford and I almost thought we were gonna do this episode outside spring has finally arrived in the Northeast it's only May short-sleeves some tan yeah not for all of us but we're gonna jump into some news because Ford made a big announcement getting rid of all their sedans well not exactly but they did say that they're going to be phasing out of their cars Jake am I not to be able to get a Mustang to drive around in the nice weather or like a Focus ST II in the future or like this year well the Mustang is not as an end so you will be able to get a Mustang and that's not going away which is good because they're always threatening about that yeah but in terms of the sedans yeah we're gonna see them phased out a lot of the sedans and that to me honestly this little bit in evitable I mean you look at Ford and I mean look actually you look at Chrysler I mean they've kind of phased out small and mid-sized cars a little while ago yeah they can't figure out how to make a profit out of them they also can't really figure out how to make vehicles that are truly truly competitive I mean look at Ford I mean you look at compact cars you look at midsize cars these are really really competitive markets with a lot of really good entries and you got you know all the work that they've done with the Ford Focus and the Ford Fusion in terms of you know the EcoBoost engine and and the powershift transmission they arguable to get the fuel economy the aren't able to get the reliability there's no ego and there's just kind of boost right right and actually if you look at it you look at the market in terms of you know family cars are the most popular cars in the market it is so quickly going from you know mid-sized sedans to small SUVs yeah and actually the best small SUVs in the market are getting better fuel economy then Ford's getting with their midsize hands well right I know Jen Jen brought our ratings here and you know the fusions a good vehicle but it just doesn't right at the top and I think that's that's important to tell certainly the viewers it is a vehicle we recommend we like how it drives very much but when you look at things like the Accords and the Camrys and that category where so many models are recommended it's hard to keep up and I you know I was thinking about it this car is all tooled up if they can't make a profit no you know it hasn't changed then it's just gonna keep languishing even if they hang on to it it's gonna get more anymore just pair it with the best weren't you guys talking to even the Camry which is you know the the top of the heap isn't the rav4 even outselling the Camry yep I think you talked about to the market yeah yeah it's where the mark is going I mean look they're not they're sedans aren't going away don't don't don't worry there's gonna be plenty of money plenty of those vehicles out there well you know one of the discussion points we had was that the fusion used to be a partnership so so yeah so I mean in my opinion I would say one of the kind of unfortunate decisions that Ford did was kind of a divorce from Mazda so you go back 10 years I mean a lot of the development was tied in with Mazda in fact the previous generation of the Ford Fusion was really based on a Mazda and guess what it was actually pretty reliable so you can come to dry and say the new fusion isn't all fun to drive and whatnot but the issue is that you look at Mazda and while they don't have high volumes of vehicles wow they have some efficient power trains that are smooth and they got great chassé ease that you know are dynamic and fun to drive and you know in another world if they didn't have that divorce from you know Ford and Mazda the new Focus the fusion they could have been you know Mazda 3 Mazda 6 base well as an example of that we actually have both a borrowed Mazda 6 turbo and I think right as we speak literally I think they're picking that without getting a Mazda 6 which is the normally aspirated four-cylinder yeah you know and Jen this is a car that has has it lived on if you will are that teen driver list for for a while right I go back I had a Mazda 6 to 6 in college and it's always been to Mazda a little bit cooler we are at least we thought it's a little bit cooler when we were driving it going free I record you in Mazda history yeah I gotta get on there so so in high school the car that I was driving with my parents Mazda 3 2 3 you go station wagon with a stick shift I looked at it was with my ex-wife considered a protege you know the sporty one but Mazda want too much money yeah so we ended up leasing it Corolla so we digress but to answer your question yes yes it is on our team driver list we were really happy to see that there is standard be the AE be transitions as you go up and trim it does get better but there at least is some level of AE be even on the base it's the the low speed so it's a city like six it's exactly exactly to your to your desires for your teen drivers still can get a manual mm-hmm I think this turbocharged one we have it would be too fast for our teen driver list but right story night put those high-performance that's on there it's a little slower is a little better right and I would say with with a new driver I mean I think learning how to drive sticks important and of course and when he deals with distraction once you're driving a stick shift you're engaged in the driving experience and it's hard to pick up the phone and text on all those things but um you know on the other side of it we're done with a base one I mean this one that we borrowed is kind of like very nice the high this is like a $36,000 model it's yeah it's kind of the Ardo journalists will loan this car out check out our car that said the thing is amazing I mean I really enjoy driving this thing I mean it's like a feels like a sports car sounds like this I should ride this well with 19-inch low-profile wheels right right and the sound oh my god turbo four but yeah it's yeah I mean it just no grass penises know that tell ya well we hear that with these turbo fours but it's wow it sounds like it sounds great it and it has a good sound but number the changes they made were to address some things that we found with the last one particularly the noise yeah and the ride quality yeah those are too big you know detriments to the last and this is a vehicle you know certainly outfitted like this this is a car that just great steering feel it doesn't doesn't beat you up with the ride huh it's got a compliant ride it's the right the noise is better I mean it's kind of like you know BMW it's a bit hard on drive BMW it's a front drive BMWs building everything the world's turning of the twisted and turned exactly exactly you know like Jen was saying a be automatic emergency braking the low-speed is standard right you have to move up from the sport to get the stand the standard high speed but on the sport you can't option it in you know so I think that much like they did with the cx-5 you're gonna see it right being criminally roll in as a standard feature across and I would add you get other things to blind-spot gets added and lane departure kits at it as you step up to Emily in keeping assist so yeah and this is like other monsters I mean actually they're gonna wind up because people who by masters tend to be kind of enthusiasts and into it and not just buying hay but but because of that they'll probably be a fair amount of pretty well-equipped you know they're gonna probably sell a decent amount of these turbos yeah yeah unlike a lot of manufacturers where it's they talk about the turbo they talk about the 300 horsepower journalists it goes Auto journals into three of them in the market right and then the other 90 percent of people by the the rental standard on right right well I I like that driving that one I can't wait to get ours in hope Steve gets back in time and we'll talk about more and you'll see it online when we we put up our justin in our first video so yeah that's gonna take us quickly to viewer questions cuz we really have some good ones this week we're also getting a lot of video responses and text messages to our iMessage handles so talking cars at icloud.com i do have to read it that's a mouthful but you know i don't have to read this thank you very much keep sending them in we really appreciate it it's a great forum for you guys to send us messages the first one we have a video question about swapping tires so let's go to the videotape hello consumer reports my question is about balancing of wheels and tires I have two sets of seasonal tires each with their own sets of rims each time I change from season to season do they need to be rebalanced so Jen I think in a previous life you were tire engineer right no when genes not here he's off on a walk you you can fill in you know like the guy asked do you really need to swap to balance your wheels and tires combo if you're taking them on and off in a set you know you're not popping the tire off right they're mounted on the rim in the shorter answer is no you do not have to rebalance if you haven't changed the orientation of the tire to the wheel and you've just stored it that way yep so it does bring up though you talked about it's spring now so I just want to appeal and say if you are still riding on winter tires because it could snow anymore I think we're done you never know anew but it's time to take them off it is it is much better for keeping your tire for more seasons because they are softer they wear more quickly as well as you know keeping shorter braking distances they're not made for warmer weather they're not made necessarily for cleared roads in the warmer weather so time to take them off the other thing I want to point out is is that he does have his tires mounted on wheels and it's an expense but if you can afford it that's really the best implementation of how to swap out your winter tires you minimize the risk of the mounting and dismounting process every year you minimize the risk of damaging now the tire pressure monitoring sensors that are typically in that that wheel cavity and you protect your potentially your nicer wheels from sand and salt and corrosion of what's on the road certainly some vehicles you even want to go down the size actually I mean if you look at steel wheels they aren't that expensive in a long run you may actually wind up being better off because it does cost something I mean no wheel balance or you know a mounter and everything you know you're saving the money cuz you don't have to get them balanced you don't have to get them mounted all the time I mean if you have a good luck wrench and a torque wrench this work what you can do them in your own driveway if their mom yeah Jack a block would block behind the size and roll and I think we've got we got some footage you know that that shows the process because we do it we sometimes we do it on our own cars but we do a lot of mounting and balancing and you know one of the interesting things is like you're talking about the the damage potential to the to the tire pressure monitoring systems happens you know you you get this they're putting the tire on and then filling it with air it's you know this big bang that goes on but the sense is just so sensitive sensitive sensors that you know if you don't mount it properly it's going to damage that and they they do cost money we have really nice mounting equipment yes you're probably seeing in the video not every garage has that so you're risking the sensors which may cost more than mules do right and you're also risking the tires because the bead you know you can you could damage damage the bead and you know again this steel wheels I mean look almost that you know a lot of these new cars they come up with these low profile alloy wheels you hit a pothole in the winter yeah yeah not not not not so good and a lot of people who live in apartments or condos at an old store a lot of places if you do buy the package from them they'll actually store them for you the you know out of season so even there it's a way wait we had just actually over the winter you know the test cars we often will begin potholes yeah yeah yeah and the amount it costs to replace a tire in brand new rocky always I mean well over a thousand dollars we just said on or Lexus LS well over a thousand dollars to replace a wheel and yep and a tire we've we've got a really good question here about high-speed automatic emergency braking which is you know a EB and forward collision warning FCW two things that we really feel should be standard on every trim of every model the the question is I recently rented a Volvo s90 sedan and it brought me to a stop when I wasn't paying attention to the car ahead of me that had slammed on its brakes but why are there high and low speed versions of a EB isn't a EB supposed to work at all speeds okay there is a difference with systems between manufacturers and you know on brand but Jake why is there even a low speed system yeah good question okay I mean no I mean the thing is that we we believe it should if you have a system that operates at you know 50 miles per hour and will slam on the brakes and help you and you know if you're going 51 to not do anything right seems like mazda has you know but 2 to 17 and then you have to get another right and unfortunately you have automakers that are you know the charging you more for these extra added safety now now it's conceivable that some of them you need additional sensors you need additional maybe you can do one with radar and you need a camera and radar to do other things so I mean if you're gonna be hitting the brakes at a higher speed you really want to be sure that you're doing it and not having a false positive off all situation right so there's reasons for from the engineering standpoint but to the point is if if they have they've developed the system they know how to do it and it does prevent crashes and save lives you know just come on well and Jen you know one of the things particularly through your your side of the of your workload you know you have some staffers you look at the different systems and you know one will bring you to a stop like he was talking about but there is a difference in high speed and low speed ATB right so I think that's part of it is is kind of this kind of steps into the you know the delivery of aiibi so that one consumers aren't getting a perception that it's going to stop them from all speeds yes the difference you know these low speed systems they will typically bring you to a stop as this person experienced but they can't do that from from highway speeds right they're gonna break they're gonna help reduce the energy of the impact but they're not necessarily gonna stop so they want to make it clear to consumers as we've been talking about what they're getting and you know some of the ratings third parties you know the IHS very clearly says it's superior at 25 miles per hour so there's a little bit perhaps of implementing to the tests that are current at this time and so and we're encouraging manufacturers by making it part of our rating score right you know manufacturers good certain number of points we maybe won't give that Oh out but right and we're doing we're distinguishing the ones that operate at highways highways and the ones that you know maybe will operate at twenty five right and I think you'll see more and more again the next step is to go to the higher speeds yeah and it's and these are features that people are asking for yep so safety is absolutely is important to to consumer reports but customers going to dealers asking for it finally we've got a question about an older vehicle that that honestly we liked here when we didn't you know put it through testing but a lot of Consumer Reports employees actually went out and bought with their own money and kept it for a long time I love my Mazda 5 but it's no longer available in the United States it's boxy nature made it versatile for hauling stuff and I'll average about 25 miles per gallon in my 2012 model it's fun to drive since it's a Mazda yeah what do I replace it with that is also versatile and fun to drive but as modern safety features and improve fuel economy is there a spiritual successor to the Mazda 5 so Jake Jen Toyota rav4 CRV I don't think so and I'm you know I look at the words we use tremendously practical and underappreciated gem these are the words we wrote but like things like that Mazda 5 kia rondo remarkably practical and they just for flex when I go back to my Ford Flex that I love yep yeah and they just they're just not big enough ears which is crazy because if you go overseas you go to Japan or you go to what you're right it's like it's everyone's driving one of these things like little micro bands actually called it you know it's a micro van and it was great sliding doors on the side like you talked about three rows of two seats which was novel so you know it's really kind of a four-seater with without jump seats you know I had we mechanic had one for his family and they put like a still has his Mazda fire yeah you know yeah so what are we gonna tell we get another Mazda I mean I would go cx-5 I know it's an SUV but the way the cx-5 drives it doesn't drive like a rav4 or a CRV I mean it's live sport it's a too fun vehicle it could be had in front will drive and you could get the front wheel drive so you know he does he's lived with the front-wheel drive mazda 5 for a while right I do think there he's gonna be just I think that's the right answer I do but I do think they're gonna have a transition and maybe even a little disappointment about visibility and access and all of that that Mazda 5 offered that the cx-5 just does not so there you it save your mazda5 in the backyard fun driving and get a cx-5 to have a modern safety and dual anthony vehicle on that note that's it for this episode of talking cars with Consumer Reports as always check the show notes for more information on the vehicles and topics we discuss thanks for watching see you next time youboards announce that they're done with making any sedans is that really the case plus we talk about the mazda6 that we just added to our fleet and what vehicle would be the spiritual successor to the Mazda 5 that and other viewer questions next on talking cars hi everybody and welcome to another episode talking cars with Consumer Reports I'm John linka I'm Jake Fisher I'm Jennifer Stafford and I almost thought we were gonna do this episode outside spring has finally competitive I mean look at Ford I mean you look at compact cars you look at midsize cars these are really really competitive markets with a lot of really good entries and you got you know all the work potholes yeah yeah yeah and the amount it costs to replace a tire in brand new rocky always I mean well over a thousand dollars we just said on or Lexus LS well over a thousand dollars to replace a wheel and yep and a tire we've we've got a really good question here about high-speed automatic emergency braking which is you know a EB and forward collision warning FCW two things that we really feel should be standard on every trim of every model the the question is I recently rented a Volvo s90 sedan and it brought me to a stop when I wasn't paying attention to the car ahead of me that had slammed on its brakes but why are there high and low speed versions of a EB isn't a EB supposed to work at all speeds okay there is a difference with systems between manufacturers and you know on brand but Jake why is there even a low speed system yeah good question okay I mean no I mean the thing is that we we believe it should if you have a system that operates at you know 50 miles per hour and will slam on the brakes and help you and you know if you're going 51 to not do anything right seems like mazda has you know but 2 to 17 and then you have to get another right and unfortunately you have automakers that are you know the charging you more for these extra added safety now now it's conceivable that some of them you need additional sensors you need additional maybe you can do one with radar and you need a camera and radar to do other things so I mean if you're gonna be hitting the brakes at a higher speed you really want to be sure that you're doing it and not having a false positive off all situation right so there's reasons for from the engineering standpoint but to the point is if if they have they've developed the system they know how to do it and it does prevent crashes and save lives you know just come on well and Jen you know one of the things particularly through your your side of the of your workload you know you have some staffers you look at the different systems and you know one will bring you to a stop like he was talking about but there is a difference in high speed and low speed ATB right so I think that's part of it is is kind of this kind of steps into the you know the delivery of aiibi so that one consumers aren't getting a perception that it's going to stop them from all speeds yes the difference you know these low speed systems they will typically bring you to a stop as this person experienced but they can't do that from from highway speeds right they're gonna break they're gonna help reduce the energy of the impact but they're not necessarily gonna stop so they want to make it clear to consumers as we've been talking about what they're getting and you know some of the ratings third parties you know the IHS very clearly says it's superior at 25 miles per hour so there's a little bit perhaps of implementing to the tests that are current at this time and so and we're encouraging manufacturers by making it part of our rating score right you know manufacturers good certain number of points we maybe won't give that Oh out but right and we're doing we're distinguishing the ones that operate at highways highways and the ones that you know maybe will operate at twenty five right and I think you'll see more and more again the next step is to go to the higher speeds yeah and it's and these are features that people are asking for yep so safety is absolutely is important to to consumer reports but customers going to dealers asking for it finally we've got a question about an older vehicle that that honestly we liked here when we didn't you know put it through testing but a lot of Consumer Reports employees actually went out and bought with their own money and kept it for a long time I love my Mazda 5 but it's no longer available in the United States it's boxy nature made it versatile for hauling stuff and I'll average about 25 miles per gallon in my 2012 model it's fun to drive since it's a Mazda yeah what do I replace it with that is also versatile and fun to drive but as modern safety features and improve fuel economy is there a spiritual successor to the Mazda 5 so Jake Jen Toyota rav4 CRV I don't think so and I'm you know I look at the words we use tremendously practical and underappreciated gem these are the words we wrote but like things like that Mazda 5 kia rondo remarkably practical and they just for flex when I go back to my Ford Flex that I love yep yeah and they just they're just not big enough ears which is crazy because if you go overseas you go to Japan or you go to what you're right it's like it's everyone's driving one of these things like little micro bands actually called it you know it's a micro van and it was great sliding doors on the side like you talked about three rows of two seats which was novel so you know it's really kind of a four-seater with without jump seats you know I had we mechanic had one for his family and they put like a still has his Mazda fire yeah you know yeah so what are we gonna tell we get another Mazda I mean I would go cx-5 I know it's an SUV but the way the cx-5 drives it doesn't drive like a rav4 or a CRV I mean it's live sport it's a too fun vehicle it could be had in front will drive and you could get the front wheel drive so you know he does he's lived with the front-wheel drive mazda 5 for a while right I do think there he's gonna be just I think that's the right answer I do but I do think they're gonna have a transition and maybe even a little disappointment about visibility and access and all of that that Mazda 5 offered that the cx-5 just does not so there you it save your mazda5 in the backyard fun driving and get a cx-5 to have a modern safety and dual anthony vehicle on that note that's it for this episode of talking cars with Consumer Reports as always check the show notes for more information on the vehicles and topics we discuss thanks for watching see you next time you\n"
