Welcome to Two Minute AK: Analyzing Tactical Approaches in Football

We are going to be looking at passing lane pressing, a method that has been frequently used by Pep Guardiola, and explore its tactical approach.

Passing Lane Pressing: A Tactical Approach

Looking at passing lane pressing, we're focusing on persuading the opposition into playing a pass. When they have the ball, we're not locking onto early, allowing them to think that they've got options on the board. In reality, when we go to play it, we can hunt in packs and win that ball, stopping them from playing their forward and keeping possession.

Players moved towards the ball on lost possession and then blocked passing lanes, leaving other options as bait. A red player in the middle has got the ball, and we're looking at a Barcelona scene with our midfield three of Bush, Get, Iniesta, and Javi moving into position. Esther is blocking that pass into the striker whilst also forcing the play backwards.

Iniesta locks onto the player, while javi locks onto the player. This creates a 5v3 overload, where the play goes to play a ball into the winger. We have two players who can intercept the ball, and our back four is in place, with Daniel having an option to get Ythen in behind. Our front three of Pedro, Messi, and Vera are protected by Bush getting Abidal and Dani Álvarez covered.

Our approach is to win that ball by baiting the opposition into plane passes where we want them to go. We're trying to force the ball into areas where space is congested and we enclose the center of the pitch off. When we spoke about last week's bolt and closing the player on the ball's field of vision, this approach continues.

The player with the ball is aware that there are options available, so they want to lock onto them and close the pitch. This creates a situation where our players can come inside and win the ball from them, playing it into positions where we have runners. By beating the opposition in two areas where we want them to go, we're now pressing a team to win the ball and having possession of the pitch or even in the middle.
