2024 Acura ZDX A-Spec and Type S are finally here!

The Revival of the Acura ZDX: A Fully Electric SUV with Acura Minded Performance

The Acura ZDX has always been a unique and stylish vehicle, delivering a coupe-like SUV experience to customers. And now, fast forward a few years, Acura has revived the ZDX nameplate, this time applying it to a fully electric SUV that features less controversial styling but a whole heaping of Acura minded performance.

The 2024 Acura ZDX and its dual-motor sibling, the ZDX Type S, are the result of Acura's efforts to showcase the upcoming design language. The Precision EV concept was invited to test drive these new models, giving us a first look at what to expect from the production version. And let me tell you, it's exciting. Time marches forward, and here we have the first vehicle to wear those lines - the new ZDX.

The size-wise, the ZDX sits in a similar space to Cadillac's Lyric, due to both riding on the GM Ultium platform. This joint venture is aimed at getting both Acura and Honda moving forward before they bring out their own scalable electric platform. In style terms, the Precision EV concept has turned the ZDX into what looks like a futuristic MDX, with aggressive lines coming off the hood and Jewel eye headlights that stretch nicely from the grille to the fenders.

There's nothing offensive about this design; in fact, it's a nice clean look with great curves sculpting in the lower section of the doors and a taut shoulder line at each corner. The base ZDX A-spec model wears 20 by Nine Inch Alloy Wheels. Moving on to the Type S, the standard roller is a 22 by nine and a half-inch wheel, each model wearing All Seasons as standard but also available with a set of 275-section tires with Summers on the Type S - pretty cool.

The Type S, however, gets serious stopping power while the A-spec should be fine with 12.6 inch front and 13 and a half inch rear rotors. The Type S also has massive Brembos with 15.6 inch front rotors clamped down on by a set of six piston calipers. This is more than just brakes and wheel/tire setup; it's a combination that separates these two vehicles.

The A-spec comes standard with a single motor at the rear, which delivers around 340 horsepower and an estimated driving range of 325 miles. If you opt for the all-wheel drive dual motor package on the A-spec, Acura hasn't released power output figures yet. Moving to the Type S, it's a dual-motor only, delivering an extremely healthy 500 horsepower with a range estimated at 288 miles. The Type S also gets height-adjustable air suspension, sport-tuned adaptive dampers, and a sport driving mode that maximizes motor responsiveness for proper EV off-the-line acceleration.

All models of the ZDX will utilize a 102 kilowatt hour battery pack, all of which can charge up at speeds of up to 190 kilowatts. This should net you 81 miles of range in just 10 minutes on the single-motor A-spec model. On the inside, you'll get an 11 inch digital gauge cluster paired with an 11.3 inch center screen. The good news is that unlike upcoming GM stuff, the ZDX has Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes equipped with a suite of built-in Google items, as well as a Bang & Olufsen setup calling it a luxury audio experience.

This means you get 18 speakers, 14 amplified channels, a sub, and something called "3DC sound control" and another referred to as "acoustic lens technology." The speaker array might seem daunting, but Acura assures us that these features ensure proper separation and crispness in the sounds, which is what we want from a good audio system. And if you like the audio, it's well-specked. Not really a surprise for an Acura product.

One more interesting feature for this ZDX is the introduction of Acura Watch 360 Plus, coming on the Type S and allowing for hands-free driving on up to 400,000 miles of compatible roads. This system might sound familiar, as it's basically rebranded from GM Super Cruise, which we know is a great system.
