Unboxing Donations: A Tour of the Recent Arrivals
As we embark on this LGRunboxing of donations, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia. It's been a while since I've done one of these, so happy new year to me as well! Hope you all had a great set of holidays as well.
Let's get started by unboxing the goodies that have arrived from kind individuals over the past several months. First up, we have a selection of Christmas gifts sent to me by Gary. It seems like a drop shipment through Amazon, and they've kindly wrapped them in these nice gift boxes. Ah, yes! The Micro Kids, an 80s adventure with ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and more – it looks really cool to me!
Gary's also included another one of his goodies, which I'll get to later. But for now, let's take a closer look at this first gift. As you can see, The Micro Kids is an 80s adventure game that comes with a ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and other retro consoles. It's amazing how some people still appreciate the classics! And who knows, maybe one day I'll dust off my old Commodore 64 and try out some of these games.
Next up, we have Happy Coding With Sinclair BASIC. Now, this is a book that caught my eye when I saw it. I've never typed in any games on a Spectrum before, mainly because of the keyboard – it's just not very user-friendly! But, Gary himself has included another one of his books, which I'm sure will be a great resource for anyone interested in programming.
Moving on to the next gift, we have ZX Spectrum Games Code Club. This book is part of a series that aims to teach people how to code games using the ZX Spectrum. Now, I've never been much of a gamer myself, but this looks like an interesting project. Maybe one day I'll give it a try!
Now, let's talk about our next gift. Unfortunately, I'm not sure who sent this one through the Royal Mail, so it could be anywhere in Great Britain! But that's okay – we'll just have to wait and see what it is.
As fate would have it, this gift turned out to be a special physical version of Hypnospace Outlaw! Yes, you heard that right – this game is actually quite old. I had been tweeting about it the other day, showing how I was running it on a CRT because it felt very appropriate. The game's aesthetic and aesthetic are remarkably accurate, making it feel like a piece of 90s history.
But what's even more amazing is that this special edition looks exactly like any number of CD-ROM software discs from back in the day! It's like something out of a time capsule – AOL discs, anyone? This is extremely cool to me!
And there you have it – our tour of the recent donations. It's been an absolute pleasure unboxing these goodies and sharing them with you all. Stay tuned for more updates, and who knows what other surprises we'll get in the future!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enGreetings, and welcome to an LGRunboxing of donations thing! This one for April of 2019.Yeah I haven't done oneof these since last year,so happy new year I guess.Hope you had a good set of holidays. So yeah, let's get tounboxing what's arrivedfrom you kind individualsover the past several months.First up is a selectionof Christmas thingssent to me from Gary.Kind of a drop shipment through Amazon. And they put them in thesenice gift wrapped packages.Ah yes, The Micro Kids,an 80s adventure withZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and more.By Gary himself.I mean, it looks really cool to me,and the second one from him.Happy Coding With Sinclair BASIC.There we go, another book of his.ZX Spectrum Games Code Club. You know, I've actually nevertyped in any games on a spectrum at all.Mainly because of that friggin' keyboard.Ah, I would be more inclined toif I had a maybe a 128 Plus or something, but neat looking selection of books, sir,so thank you for sending me these. All right, got one herefrom I'm not sure who,but it's through the Royal Mail,so somewhere in Great Britain I presume, maybe it'll say inside, let's see.Oh, , yeah Ihad been expecting this. So, this is a special physicalversion of Hypnospace Outlaw. So yeah, look at that, awesome, awesome little collectible herefor what has become one ofthe more fascinating gamesof 2019 thus far.I was actually just tweetingabout it the other day, showing how I was running it on a CRT,because it felt very appropriate.I mean, you know, it's a modern game, runs on Windows 10 and such, but yeah, it's based in like90s fictitious internet. But, it's highly accurateto that time periodin just look and feel andaesthetic and all that,so when they offered methis promo copy that looksreally a whole lot like any number ofCD-ROM software things that'd you get.You know, like AOL discsand stuff like that. That's extremely cool to me.\"Year 2000 ready!\"Yeah there we go,it's on a CD-R,but a nicely pressed label. So, yeah, thanks forsending this my way guys! And we've got one herefrom Brad in Canada.I swear, not everythingis gonna be a promo, but this one is absolutely down my alley, because yeah this is a gamehe put together for MS-DOS,so this is a properDOS game called Lizard, and I've already playeda little bit of it.It's VGA, it's very muchemulating the style ofclassic NES games, though. So, it does actuallylook or play much likea lot of DOS platformersfrom back in the day. It's closer to an 8-bit NES game, but yeah still very interestingand I love the factthat he released it on afloppy disk like this, atleast in some limited fashion,so thank you.Okay, got one here from Tom.Enclosed is the keychain he mentioned,it is very much up my alley, and it is from when he worked at EDS.So yeah, check this out, this is a little promotionalkeychain from Intelback in the day. It's a 386 CPU die and lookslike the core right there, check that out. That's just really neat, happy to give it a new home.Thank you very much, sir.Got one here from Rick in Australia.Quite a new subscriber.First YouTube channel he'ssubscribed to on March 18th.Oh yeah, so he said hewas gonna send me theseFallout 76 records thatwere promoted in Australiafrom something calledStack magazine, I suppose, and check that out.I thought that was actually really cool, because, I mean, not thatI'm a fan of Fallout 76,but I'm absolutely a fan of vinyl. He sent me two, like one to open, one tokeep as a collectible.Yeah, that's got Take Me Home, and then this side is justlike an etching really. You can see there, it's gotlike a vault outline going on.I love little collectibles like this,so thank you very muchfor sending me these, that's awesome.Okay, got one here from Chris.Oh, no note, but he did include thereceipt from the Goodwillhe found this at for a dollar. We can bend that back into shape. So anyways, this is a gameI had not heard of before,it's called Mortalus: TheQuest For Immortality. The ultimate VRML action game, now that is not somethingI think I've ever covered before in LGR.VR and that was all.Interesting rabbit hole to dive down into,it wasn't just games,it was websites anddifferent related stuff. It was a fascinating time of exploration.Either way, thank youfor sending this my way,it's just, again, somethingI'd never heard ofand that is awesome.Got one here from Rob.Greetings from Schaumburg.Thrifted this many moons agoand it's been sitting in a box.So yeah, strange mix right here,'cause it says ATI Rage XLeight megabyte video card, but then it also says GeForce4 MX.Those are completely different things, different generations even .Anyway, that is what it is, though. This is a GeForce MX400.I've actually been wantingone of these again.I had one a very long time ago.Actually, I don't thinkit was this one exactly,I think I had the MX440 at one point. But, thank you very much, I will use this.Got one here from Wilcox, apparently.Ah yes, it's from Andrew.First video he saw of mine wasactually building the Lego IBM PC,and so he's got this 3D printed IBM PCthat he's printed out, paintedand it looks pretty awesome, I gotta say.Look, it's even got alittle switch that moves. That is really cool, thank you very much.I just, I love little things like this, little computers, aw man.Okay, got one here from, huh, I don't know.Oh yeah, I do rememberthis being mentioned.Mm, that is nice smelling leather.Ah yes, Jose of JP Leathercraft. So, this is a thing that he made, and he was a fan of my videosand he just wanted to give something back.He has a leather working business.Check it out,it's a wallet with LGR green stitching, and an LGR logo debossed into it.I've never had anythinglike this sent to me,so thank you very much, Jose, this is super cool, nice work.Got one here from David.Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.Yeah, I actually got a boxedversion of this a while back, and it didn't have the card inside. And, you know, don'tknow if this one worksit's a little beat up andkinda gross, of course, but this is a Goodwill find that he foundand said he'd send to me,cuz yeah, I've been wanting it.Oh yeah, it's an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro128 megabyte, the AGP version. The card actually had, back in the day I used it toplay Half-Life 2 and Doom 3and yeah, I've just beenwanting to revisit that.Definitely gonna try it out andsee if I can get it working.Got one here from Germany, from Marcus. This is really cool as aSim City Maxis collector.Sim City 3000 Deutschland.Yeah, obviously, something I'mjust never gonna come acrosshere in the US.Seems to be kind of a budget release, because the other ones likethis have a more substantial boxand like some documentation and stuff, this doesn't seem to have any of that, but either way unique kind of thingand yeah, just gratefulto have this sent to meall the way from Germany,so thank you very much. This is extremely cool,I love collecting these worldwidereleases of Sim City 3000,there's so many of them.Got one here from Ben,and this is apparently vinyl records. The note is on the box.So yeah, check it out, thecover art is based on DeskMate, also a video for Pausebreak1on Software Records YouTube channel.I will enjoy the record, because this is a highlyunique idea for one.Ben Zimmerman, The Baltika Years, and this right here ismade on Tandy DeskMate. So, yeah, the operating environment,a lot of Tandy's came with.Apparently done between 1992 and 2002.Absolutely my kinda record, thank you very much.I am curious to hearwhat this sounds like.Got another one here fromCanada, this one comes from Hal.Oh, all right. That's kind of a clueas to what this may be.Obviously this is an Atari Lynx.First time I have ever even held a Lynx.Fascinating system, I'vealways been intriguedby the things on here.Yeah, we offered a systemand a bunch of games, like really cool ones.Of course, I'm like yeah sure.I mean, if you'reoffering, I will take it,'cause, I don't know, like I saidI just have no experience with it.I've always wanted to try theoriginal Chips's Challenge on here, which I do have a copy of.Yeah, this is really cool, obviously.Thank you very much, Hal, for the Lynx.Got another one here fromsomebody in Great Britain, does not say the name onthe front that I can see.Ah, it's from Greg,I do remember hearingabout this now from him.A pair of 1970s SP11 battery cellsand some UK registered shareware disks, those are the ones that most excite me.Wow, this is unique packaging!Nice job, sir!Aha, one packing peanut. So yeah, check it out, these old batteries.Posted something about 'em on Twitter,I'm like, holy crap those look cool, and he's like, yeah don'tthey and I'll send 'em to you.So, he did.I don't know, I just havea thing for old batteries. But yeah, it was all theseregistered APOGEE disksfrom the UK that really got my attention.I love collecting registered shareware, especially stuff from APOGEE,but I'd never had or even comeacross anything from the UK.Apparently, it was PrecisionSoftware Applicationsthat handle distribution. So, you had Wolfenstein 3D,Commander Keen four and five,Wacky Wheels Upgrade Edition,Cosmo's Cosmic Adventureepisodes one, two and three, and this one which I think just sort ofspawned the whole conversationabout these on Twitter,is the Duke Nukum releases with the uwhen it was still spelled that way, actually just got the US version of thisregistered shareware release, and he was very kind to sendthese as well from the UK,so thank you very much Greg, these are really cooladditions to the collection.Alrighty, got one herefrom Vanessa in California.Ah yes, so this is a little different. This is Shroud of theAvatar Forsaken Virtues, collector's edition, bigbox from Lord Britishand yeah this is, itlooks like an old game, but it is actually not. This is from 2018.I never really heard muchabout it when it came out,I kinda got the impressionthough from her emailsaying that well, it'sjust taking up spaceand brings up ideas ofregret or something,so anyway sent it to me and here it is.Thank you very much. It'll at least look cool on the shelfnext to all my other LordBritish things, you know.Ultima's and all that kinda stuff,so thank you very much.Got a package here from Nick.Math Blaster 2 in the big box,did not have this one.Looking over there at myshelf, I have Math Blaster,Math Blaster Junior, Reading Blaster,a bunch of Blaster's episodes and stuff, but not this one.Very cool, thank you very much'cause I don't know man,I like collecting these, and this is actually onethat I've never even played, which is neat 'cause I likethe Math Blaster games.Got one here from Emily.Apparently, her aunt was agraphic designer for many yearsin Minneapolis.Found in her closet givento her husband as a gag giftand they're like ah, LGR!Oh, that cracks me up.People are sending metheir unwanted gag gifts.Honestly though, I mean, you're spot on.This is absolutely the kindof gift that I would want. This is a wireless mouse by Truemouse, the TW-500.Yeah, infrared wireless mouse, this cannot work very well. It's still sealed, which is really cool.Don't know when it was made,I don't actually see a date on here.Judging by the screenshots and photosand all the packaging stuff,it looks like maybe late 80s.Thank you for passing along your gag gift, everyone involved in this story.Think I might cover this at some point, seems like Oddware. All right, got one here from Lenovo. They reached out on Twitterand they're like heywe're fans of LGR, Lenovo.I don't know, we'llsend you some somethingin a box if you want itand I'm like sure.What?Uh...What the heck?Seems like Lenovo wantsto be my Valentine.Yeah, they did get in toucharound Valentine's Day,so sure.Is that a power supply? What did they send?So there's some Lenovo socks, I guess. They have a whole bunch of differentsocial media icons on them.Okay, I like these. These are some ThinkPad25th anniversary socks.Toe socks .Yeah, see this is what Ithought they were gonna send, which I guess they did.Yeah, look at that. That is a ThinkPad t-shirt.Big fan, the classic IBM ThinkPadsand of course Lenovo doesthe ThinkPads now, so.Yeah, that's neat. It's a shame it doesn't say IBM,but you know they're not IBM.Huh.Yeah, I'm not familiar withall these new fangled devices, that's a neat looking design for a mouse. It's a Yoga mouse. It's like a Legion backpack.I like the box.Ooh, good grief. That's really neat.I don't even know what it is.All right, so this is a ThinkPad X1.Apparently it has a Core i78th gen processor in thereand I've literally neverseen one of these before, this is the first time I'veeven heard this thing exists, but it looks neat, obviously.Holy nuts.Well see, okay, so here's the thing.Thank you very much Lenovo,I truly didn't know thatthey were sending this,I seriously thought it wasjust socks and a t-shirt.They definitely didn'tsend any stipulations, like I said I didn't evenknow that this was...It's been sitting herefor a couple months.Man, we've still got more packages.Just two more, I think theseare not from companies. This one is from Christian.Ya mighta heard of this.In fact, I've had a ton ofpeople tell me about it.This is from Perifractic on YouTube. He's had this thing going for a while,he's tryna get the Brixty Four case doneas an official Lego kit.Congratulations on a billion subscribersor was it 10 billion? It was just one million butthank you very much, sir.Anyway, he's got a really cool channel, and this is a really cool project.Oh, good grief, that's a lot of pieces.Yeah, this is a Commodore64 case effectivelywith actual Lego piecesand you can put a C64 motherboard inside. You know, this is a little bitof a different thing for me,looking forward to it.And again, check out Perifractic's channelhe's done some really cool stuff.Okay, I think this is thelast one, from Gabriel.Who is a buddy of mine,he has a computer shop overin Raleigh, North Carolina.Really cool shopand he gets some cool stuffin, he's sent some before. So yeah, it's from a customer of hiswho was a self-described \"hacker\"and programmer and all-aroundnerd back in the 70s.They brought in this Heathkitterminal, SWTPC 6800 v2.It's some really cool stuff, but also these things, all of which I have been looking for.Oh yeah, this is awesome. So first up here wehave The Black Cauldron,a Sierra game here byAl Lowe of all people, but yeah, Sierra's version ofDisney's Black Cauldron computer gamein much better shape than the one I had.And here's one I didn't have at all. This is Dark Castle, the IBMPC/Tandy CGA EGA version, yeah the Mac version isprobably the one that'smost known by folks probably. And we've got some Infocom games here.Wonderful condition copy hereof Leather Goddesses of Phobos.3D comic, 3D glasses, maps and disks, and
